Don't know shit about metal but I saw RANGER from Finland play yesterday and it kinda blew my mind.

from Jimmy's blog :
Springy hooks. Infectious rock n’ roll riffage. A sound clip that sounds like it was gutted from some World War II era documentary.
These are a handful of things that I find to be so charming about Faux Départ’s debut demo. Well, barring the obvious that naturally comes with the French language. Yes, that’s right; for the first time in Jimmy-history, some French-brewed punk has actually found its way up here on the channel. None of that halfway “grey area” stuff that you’d get with French-inseminated areas like Montreal, no, this stuff is coming straight out of Lyon. I’m sure that all, I don’t know, two of you Frenchie fans are absolutely ecstatic to see that I’ve finally acknowledged your little corner of the world, though I wouldn’t get used to the attention if I were you. As a proud American, I’m somewhat obligated to forget that every other country exists, because when there’s no other nations for us to compete with, America is – and always will be – the number one country in the whole wide world. This tape, which was self-released earlier this year, is one of the few imports I’ve made an exception for in this mental embargo of mine. I mean, what can I say? Nothin’ butters my goose more than the sound of a language whose accent causes the speaker to sound like they’re always on the brink of hocking one fat-ass loogie. Saucy.
For real though, I think this tape is great. Generously prescribed as a “proud bastard son of Wire, Minor Threat, the Wipers and Devo” (more so Wipers, if you ask me), Faux Départ not only makes heavy nods towards the aforementioned influences through the quirky songwriting and a palpable level of energy to match it, but also throws their own lighter, poppier spin on it to keep the sound’s air of aggression, angst, and anxiety at a minimum, assuring that your toes are forever tapping in contempt of whatever message the song is trying to convey. While some songs are supposedly written in regards to introspective matters such as “being a loser in a cold, shitty town”, “getting rejected by a girl you like”, or “poseurs” the group hates, these songs sound far too upbeat for me to assume that’d ever be the case – even if DID know a lick of French, no sort of lyricism would be able to detract from how goddamn tantalizing these songs are. I ain’t all too educated as to what’s going on over in France, but consider me fuckin’ enlightened, because this three-piece sure as hell knows how to rock it.

Got a couple of new Blood Noize tape up and available. This "band" is the real deal. The kid behind the project Chuck Fuck is a legit punk weirdo. He pretty much IS the punk scene in Columbus. Don't snooze on this shit.

Brian handed me a CDR last night with recordings of all sorts of crazy side project material, the most notable being the B-Sharps, Dave E McManus with Brian and the Clocks doing 50s stuff like Nat King Cole & Bobby Darin covers in early 1976.
The studio recording of the electric eels covering The Sonics' "Styrchnine" seems to be the tip of the iceberg.
