Also love how the whole premise of that story is that he was a huge pussy hound but this one was different. She came up to him!

Mike Will is the Max Martin of rap and I'm not just saying that because... OK maybe I am. I think a lot of the relatively untagged 808 Mafia guys are as good as anyone. Well, almost anyone. I'm a hater but Drake's stable of dudes is the best in the biz. Especially on other people's songs.

If you're curious about Future's process (hee) his Westwood freestyle is basically him sitting in his own studio walking goofy Tim through the tracks, like a VH1 Classic Album. All his songs are of a piece. There's also a very depressing multipart youtube documentary about his tour with Drake, where he is opening, loping around a stage, alone, karaoke'ing the hits as millions of white teenagers videotape him on their phones.

Thug on "Digits," "Halftime" and (gulp) "Good Times"--say what you will, no one colors outside the lines nearly as good.

Roy Cohn was his lawyer? That's...disgusting...and makes perfect sense!

Yeah. I was like: but not that -- Oh.

Wow.

"Trap" is not a very useful distinction at this point.

Kendrick Lamar is boring to me. Yeah, he packs a lot of words in there but everyone is leaden down by Importance uses Real Instruments talks about Major Issues.

Whereas Thug and Fetty and Quan are making new space for the form. It's incredibly inconsistent but that's the price you pay. Future has already perfected the droning soundscape of drugged-out nihilism, dunno if he has anywhere to go from here. Kodak is still in development, I think. There are times when you can hear the Juve or the Wayne or the Gucci showing through, and much of the rest of the time he is just sort of keeping the balls in the air. And whether something is for teenagers -- Rae Sremmurd comes to mind -- does not keep me up at night. Teenagers can be interesting and good musicians it turns out.

I don't really do numerical ratings but I guess I would have given "Everybody Wants Some" a 2 and "Midnight in Paris" and "Jodorowsky's Dune" a coupla goose eggs.

Thanks for the "Always Rains" rec. This was great:

I have spent most of 2016 listening to Boosie Badazz in terms of rap. He's dropped 5 albums so far, all good-to-great.

They're a lil samey but guy is great--thought he was a blip circa "Zoom" but then he gets out of jail and he's a statesman of sorts and it turns out he was always for real. Still looking for a tagless version of this masterpiece.

Haven't really been into autopilot Future but 56 Nights straight through, extremely loud, is incredible.

Kamaiyah LP solid all the way thru.

Kodak Black seems to have found his range.

Mozzy: quite a bit to sift through. Starting point maybe "Like My Momma Care."

Loved that Tate Kobang song that came out last year, was massively disappointed in the EP for 300 Ent. Maybe he'll figure it out by album-time.

"Yamborghini High," even if it's incredibly cynical.

Thugger teased his version of Jeremih "Pass Dat" somewhere but it has yet to surface. I sure hope it does.

Watched the first ep of that Richard Price show, "The Night Of." I dunno. Hoping it gets more "procedural."

Skipped ahead from wherever I was w/ "Veep." Season 4 is way better than the first two. As I recall "The Thick of It" had a similar progresion. But then season 5 is a bit of a dip again. (One could speculate about the diminished roles of Ianucci/Blackwell/Roche/Martin etc.)

Rewatched "In The Loop" again, and wow. It's like one of those Marvel universe combination things, except it came first. Tons of people (or equivalent characters) from both shows plus James Gandolfini.

Yeah, that first interview in "Red Army," right. I had to quit at some pt cause the copy I got had subs only in Czech or something but will return to it.

Raw Deal 1948. John Alton light effects cranked all the way up. Moody voiceover, love triangle w/ wise guy-madonna-moll. Gem-like construction.

Lincoln 2012. Cheeseball, but great roles for some people, esp. David Strathairn.

W 2008. Cheeseball, no redeeming aspects.

Wild Tales 2012. Arty Argentine "Final Destination." Started to think it was getting droopy in the middle-8 but the finish put paid to that. (Also I feel like I would go for the "savage" aspect of "Relatos Salvajes"?)

Body Double 1984. De Palma's porn fantasy is "Rear Window" cum "Vertigo," starring Los Angeles and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Chris Wasson wins the Frederic Forrest/Ryan Gosling award for lead role vacuum. Good times. enjoyed "Blow Out" more but I was more stoneder.

All Is Lost 2013. I guess I should read the book--seems like it must be watertight, judging from some of the details. I suspect the adaptation gets a little loosey-goosey with the continuity and such (and watching 75-yr-old Robert Redford reefing sails and whatnot made me feel like I had arthritis myself). Still, really captures the feeling of being on a 40-ft sailboat out on the ocean. Will watch again!

From what I have read about True Detective they are being patient and letting dude write the story he wants. I think they blame some of the flaws of the second season on rushing him.

Hahaha

My std band name for a pop-punk subforum style turkey was "The Grubby Hands."

Then Vinyl had "The Nasty Bits" and I felt like a bit of a turkey myself. (Jack Ruby is a pr sweet name tho.)

Read the "Neapolitan novels." Before I started them I think I told Smith that I expected whatever I had to say about them would be of no interest to anyone.

Pretty sure that predication was correct.

Some girl did strike up a conversation after spotting it in my bag. Maybe that was the idea all along. The next step would be riding the L train back and forth conspicuously holding "Just Kids."

Le Jour se Leve (Marcel Carne, '39) Great, fatalistic french film starring Jean Gabin, a cool actor who's kind of a french version of Humphrey Bogart.

The American Friend (Wim Wenders, '77) I tried watching this back in my early 20s with some friends and didn't like it. Turned it off half-way through, no doubt because it doesn't go over well when you're getting wasted with your buds. Completely changed my opinion on this viewing. It's an incredible film, with beautiful cinematography and a great performance from Dennis Hopper. He showed up to shoot this one, coming directly from Apocalypse Now, no doubt off his rocker. Still lots of earlier Wim Wenders movies I need to see.

These two are both so great. Gabin as French Bogart is often the comparison, but I would say it's a bit misleading. His style predated the mature Bogart ... And was sort of like a Bogart/Gary Cooper intersection. Or to put it another way, J-P Belmondo was Bogart explicitly without the Gabin dignity and stolidness, just the obstreperousness and irony.

Lotta great parts to American Friend, my favorite Hopper part.

I saw Hail Caesar, which I enjoyed for the lusciousness of the set pieces, especially the way the pretty cowboy looks in the comedy of manners (though no more Busby Berkeley pastiches, guys, please) and a litany of casting jokes, but ultimately a pretty vaporous movie. I'm not sure exactly what it's getting at -- something about industrialization, and fickleness -- but I don't think it gets there.
