Music Shit / Re: Spirit Dominates Matter Tribute Box-set For Jim Shepard
« on: November 23, 2018, 11:07:34 AM »
Charles, I can't thank you enough for this. Jim has been my patron saint artist since his stuff finally clicked for me a few years back (I'll admit to not quite getting it at first). It's no exaggeration to say that I listen to him every day (either thru actual speakers or in the stereo of my mind). Snagged the letter tapes from Feeding Tube, found em very moving, and particularly enjoyed reading the accompanying Letters themselves. If I were a wealthy and powerful individual I would commission a biography to be written about him, to be published by one of the majors (Random House, Penguin, something like that) so that the general public could better know the true Jim, whatever that is. I guess it's here, and in his work.

Have also enjoyed yr youtube page over the past little while. Inspiring content. Hope you like compliments. byebye.

Listening to David Maranha for the first time.  The first track of this "Marches of the New World" is amazing -- like blown-out tribal music decaying throughout the duration.  So sick.  I've been trying to find something like this for a really long time.  If anyone has any similar recommends, I'd love to hear.

I'd check out some of Matthew Bower's work if you haven't already. Skullflower+Sun Roof!+Hototogisu. The more devotional parts of this Maranha disc sounds like "Floating Japanese Oof! Gardens" to me, the more rhythmic like bits of 80s Skullflower or even the "Argon" album. Good stuff though, thanks for sharing.

...there used to be a massive distro run by Keith Fullerton Whitman called Mimaroglu Music Sales (named after electronic composer and all around motherfucker Ilhan Mimaroglu) that I would snag shit like this outta the clearance section based solely on his reviews, which we're beautifully punctuated with many well placed bolds and italics.  Somehow I could end up with four or five records for under $50 including shipping. CrazY!

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Rabies "What You Know About Me" CS
« on: November 25, 2017, 09:49:39 AM »
Posted this in the demo zone back in the spring when we put it up, but now that its entered the physical realm (that was quite a while ago actually), figured maybe one or two people on here might be interested.

Full length of what I have described to myself as “XPRESSWAY attempts top 40”.

or

MRR's interpretation...
“This tape opens with a threatening, aggressive track, “Rabid,” and then bounces back and forth between dark, brooding singer- songwriter territory and straight up indie pop. Maybe it’s just been a long weekend of drinking too much, but some of these tracks are so pretty and so damn sad that I almost can’t handle it. There’s a couple on here that could be the soundtrack for a tragic, nostalgic breakup montage in an ‘80s movie. One track, “Pointless,” sounds like a cousin of one PAT BENETAR’s dramatic slow jams. The singer and guitarist behind this project, Rachel Fry, has an incredibly beautiful voice and skill. I’m no A&R expert, but it wouldn’t surprise me if these folks end up famous. (HB)”

Father Byron's  2-cents in October’s issue of the Wire...
“Similar line-up to the Surveillance record Man, which was reviewed a while back. This Nova Scotia quartet seems to be a bit more popoid, however, despite their name. Where Surveillance used rough guitar tones to blast forward, Rabies uses keys, effects and guitars in a much gauzy and driftier way. All female vocals as well. There’s a certain New Zealandy pucker to the proceedings in places, which balance out the cops from Parallel Lines.”

Maybe a Richie review on the way? Hope he finally pans us.

Music Shit / Re: Is there or was there punk bands from Antarctica?
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:38:25 AM »
If you count Atlantis (which is frozen deep below the ice there) I'm willing to bet there were dozens, if not hundreds of bands of varying degrees of quality. Definitely not "punk" as we perceive it though - that would be impossible!

False Security demo - (thanks for reminding me about this aggravationoverdose)

Definitely my favourite this city has produced as far as punk bands goes, particularly the song "Different Shades of Grey". Wish I could track down a superior digital rip of it. Maybe deep in the cassette drawers at CKDU but I assume it would have been pinched many years ago.

Lately I've been consumed by all things THOR, and I mean the Canadian metal god, not the cinematic marvel dude.

And also the original IRON MAN:

Well I thought I was locked out of termbo forever but I guess I was just typing in my password wrong. Picked up the second Howling Hex record at Select Sounds the other day and me and my lady matey we're quite blown away by the song "rockadoodledoo" which I expected to be from the 50's for some reason. Turns out it's Linda Lewis.
I got that howling hex record from a bargain bin a few months ago for a couple of quid (no sleeve), I think I loved the 1st song on it but totally could not stand "rock a doodle do" to the extent that I had to run across the room and pull the needle of the record

cool story bro.

She sings another one on the b-side that's also quite nice. Some good extendo noise improvs - it's a great record.

Having searched a bit about the Linda Lewis "rock a doodle do" song, it looks like a lot people dismissed it as a novelty song at the time (early 70s). I've since downloaded a couple of her albums and listened to em once or twice - they sound good, she has a sometimes-weird voice, I don't remember much else other than that it was very L-I-T-E and I liked it.

Yes, I've been thinking a thread like this would be handy. Although I nothing to contribute to it, just here to read.

Another major V-3 kick for me: I've listened to "Another Exterminator Eaten by Bugs" probably 20 times in the last two days. Onto "Inside Outpost" now. "Somedays I can't find myself, I don't think it's strange".

I'll take your This Kind of Punishment records.

Second that. I wouldn't deny that Jefferies' most memorable songs are in his solo work but I love the oppressive vibe of the TKP stuff, not to mention their wacky use of recording techniques. All those weird arrangements that constantly change from one section to another with minimal repetition must have been fairly labour intensive to engineer on a 4 track reel to reel. Makes for very personal music. I know every time I show people "Turning to Stone" they usually just look bored out of their minds though.

See you've got that Asylum Party reissue I've been after as well... right on. I'll hit you up when I figure out what the deal is with this fucking postal strike.

So... any distros/shops moving this quality product? Am I gonna have to beg someone in America to buy it and mail to me? I MUST OWN THIS RECORD (and the TJSA one too while I'm at it).
