Music Shit / Re: RIP Lemmy
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:03:59 PM »
so sad that lemmy's dead, and I don't usually care when people die. but he's brought nothing but joy and the good kind of self-righteousness to my life, which makes him almost a religious figure to me. now he's just a corpse with warts. fuck life has no meaning again.

I tried watching this because of The Best Show, but man... I don't get it... way too much unfunny stuff to slog through.

I forgot to respond to this but yes, that's an accurate description, and the same reason why I started watching it. I have no clue why I slogged through it all. I guess you get to know the characters and you want to see them succeed, as sad and pathetic as that sounds. it takes about 5 or 6 episodes to get there I think (I started with the one with scharpling on it, episode 18 or so). still, there's something oddly life affirming about the whole thing... I tend to love public access kind of stuff though. it's got a lot of humility that let's it get away with being terrible most of the time. and when professional comedians get on it, some quality shit can go down. really too bad about the musical guests though.

now when it comes masterchef jr., there's a show that's instantly gratifying.

the american jobs lp persuaded me to finally check out depeche mode in a semi-serious manner. been listening to "a broken flame" quite a bit... fuckers know how to write songs that's for goddamn sure. excited to track down some physical copies... I'm guessing they're pretty easy to find.

also after watching purple rain for the first time december 2015 will forever be remembered as the month I fell in love with Prince, especially the songs "I will die 4 u" and "purple rain". the other records I've listened to are good but haven't hit me as hard as those two songs yet. my kind of pervert.

also duke ellington/mahalia jackson, clan of xymox, pagan hellfire, the live discharge LP, and some good ol' fashioned folkways christmas comps. still obsessed with dorothy collins thanks to a home blitz interview many months back.

has anyone here ever watched the Chris Gethard show? although its format has since changed, for the most part this was an hour long late night variety/call-in comedy show on manhattan public access. I watched the whole damn thing with my girlfriend over the past 6 months or so, which is something like 150 hours of programming with absolutely no consistency/quality control. some winey though intentional sentimental shit through and through, and just generally pathetic, even embarrassing at its core. but when it's funny man is it fuckin FUNNY, some of the best bits I've ever seen in a live tv setting. terrible musical guests.

Music Shit / Re: Best shows you saw in 2015?
« on: December 03, 2015, 07:13:18 AM »
I don't get much out where I live, but the standout acts were definitely Puce Mary, Peter Brotzmann, Judas Priest, Purple Knight, and Voivod.

local shows are generally pretty uptight here but the highlights were Negative Rage in the Menz and Mollys back room and probably one of the many Unreal Thought shows I saw. Alienation in the union st. basement, Deprivation (who have since changed their name) at a bunker in the woods.

Music Shit / Re: TERMBO UPDATE THREAD

the tape that came with the cretins of distortion ohio special did wonders for my love of that state, which was already very strong. gotta track down a guns record now.

i dug the shit outta the first fordamning I got a year or so ago. never bothered to look it up on the net so I'm very excited to see there's more issues available.

the last termbo zine I read was what finally got me to revisit pro wrestling for the first time since I was about 9. all those wasted years!

Music Shit / Re: I need some good sad-bastard music
« on: October 17, 2015, 08:33:17 AM »
seems obvious but I think of the first bunch of tracks on the laughner comp as the definitive sad bastard music, especially "Cinderella of the Backstreet". I read once that those songs were recorded the night before he died, though I'm skeptical of it... if someone can fill me in on that please do.

old blues is a surefire, the original sad bastard music. lightin' hopkins is my go to for that although there's piles of them.

speaking of roky, this track will fuck you up good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaiPdQWDPGQ

Pop Punk / Re: Cuntroversy

i wish people were more outspoken about how terrible viet cong's music is as opposed to how terrible their name is. so to answer user: krautrock is dead's earlier question, that band could be something I love to hate, if only I cared. if only I cared...

in other related news, I work at a library and recently encountered someone with the real last name KUNTZ. figured this could be somehow relevant to the discussion at hand.

Skullflower - Orange Canyon Mind

If everyone round here ate acid instead of skunk, this album would be our anthem and we would put an end to poverty.

gotta get back on the Bower train, have been off it for the past year or so. did wonderful/terrible things to my subconsciousness.

listening to the DIAT lp right now. is good.

was listening to the Rat Columns 12" before. it's okay.

always loved how in a magazine as rife with misogyny and chauvinism as Forced Exposure was, lydia lunch's writing was BY FAR the most misogynistic. made meltzer looks like a bra burning feminist.

have finally entered the record hawking game, focusing on halifax bands for the time being. first up is a 7" called "north end generic" by the hardcore band GRUMP. check it out here: grump.bandcamp.com. second is another 7" called "man" by SURVEILLANCE. hear here: surveillance2015.bandcamp.com. more info is here: variousrecords.blogspot.ca. also have tapes by the very high quality post-punk/goth band UNREAL THOUGHT; unrealthought.bandcamp.com, among others. if anyone likes this shit and wants to distro it pm me.

wow, just listening to the first great plains record for the first time. I downloaded it. sounds like a flying nun band fronted by a morally reprehensible douche bag. one step away from the ultimate band, which mr. house would later form in the 90's. can't wait to check out the other records. have waited too long.

and now for my obligatory chris d. reference: just got the live flesh eaters record in the mail. still haven't listened to "it's my life to live" because it's the second last cut and I had to go to work before I could get that far. still, the man is a fucking prince and I would gladly suck his dick for a taste of the devil seamen that surely flows through his nuts'sack.

What does Rick White have to do with Canadian emo? I don't understand.

nothing really, I was takin a shit on myself, referring to all music that has an i'm so sad life is hard kinda drama to it as emo...like saying necro's "reject" = emo, tjsa "wrongheaded" = emo, damaged = emo, the blues = emo. historically inaccurate and ridiculous, I know. I actually don't know shit about true emu music and probably never will.

back to Hardcore 2015... I actually haven't heard too much that I've been excited about this year, lots of cool enough sounding bands, not too many standout tracks. I think this is my own shortcoming though, I've been lazy as fuck and have mostly been listening to industrial/synth stuff, and goin thru some classic HC bands I've overlooked in the past, making tapes off of youtube etc. excited to have more money to keep up with/collect more new stuff... next year.
