Music Shit / Re: Hardcore 2015

Halifax has the world's biggest mega boner for excruciatingly boring, anal retentive math rock and emo.  It permeates its influences into almost every underground rock band that has come out of there in the last 20 years.   And some of these people move to Montreal, Toronto, Calgary etc (usually ALL TOGETHER) and start IDENTICAL sounding bands.  Its bizarre!

you nailed it. I caught the very tail end of that scene when I moved here in 2008. arrived just in time to watch all the terrible hardcore influenced math bands turn into the next gen of terrible indie rock influenced math bands. I've even played in bands with people who were into that shit, and have made it clear that I refuse to play in any time signature other than 4/4... shit I'll do a waltz if it's called for but fuckin 7/8 5/4 with a bar of 9/16... eat my ass thank you very much. I've soiled many relationships over the years because of this and I'm grateful for it.

as for the emo thing... ya there's no gettin by it I pretty much play in an emo band. I blame rick white.

makes me think of this negative rage song, probably about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB-hAlSknZA

I guess until this moment I was unaware that there was European (or even Canadian) emo. I apologize for my country's pioneering part in all this. We dropped the bomb, and we started emo. Sorry.

you referring to canada or france here?

sad and true story: growing up in rural ontario in the mid 2000's I believed all punk sounded like emo/screamo and thus equated the word with the most terrible music ever made. needless to say when I first listened to the sex pistols at age 19 I was pretty pissed off... so many wasted years.

Another thinger you'd think I'd have heard, given my Flying Nun fandom over all these years, was the majority of the tracks on The Victor Dimisich Band LP on Siltbreeze. Dark and gothic without being cartoonish, I'll almost always prefer the NZ take over the UK one when it comes to this sorta earspace. "It's Cold Outside," indeed.

have had a similar experience with some of the Xpressway stuff. found the label years ago, flipped out, then forgot about half the catalogue because I liked it too much to download, had to hold out for the real deal. not so easy with a mostly cassette label from the 80's! so I've started downloading them again, have been recently checking out Sandra Bell's "Industrial Nights". great stuff. the kiwi's really perfected their own form of industrial skuzz, more distorted guitar/piano oriented than the cold electronic european stuff (which I love). no doubt some ultra-cool guy shades wearing label in brooklyn will reissue this in the next 25 years, though I suspect I'll be dead by then.

UPDATE: some italian guy reissued it on cassette this past january.

John Fowles, The Magus.  Well, he was definitely British.

Holy shit. I haven't thought about that book since I read it in high school. I remember loving it, but I was trying to impress a girl too. How does it hold up to a mature reading?

this was highly recommended to me by my high school english teacher many years ago. that was before he got fired for fucking his students. still haven't checked it out though, been meaning to ever since. gotta kick this mini pk dick obsession before I get into something that heavy though. going through "man in the high castle" right now.

felt lucky when I found a small pile of chris d. records a couple of weeks ago so I've been spinning them pretty non-stop. Divine Horsemen's "Time Stands Still" and "Middle of the Night" and also the Stone By Stone lp. love how seemingly unpopular they are.. always manage to find these things for under $10. even a lot of my friends immediately write them off as some shitty alternative roots-rock band - they're clearly idiots! it's not like chris d. isn't a major figure in the underground, but even the most devoted punk fans I talk to have never even heard of the flesh eaters... guess it seems weird for me as my introduction to the band was thru byron coley touting them as his favourite band of all time. I will admit it did take quite a few listens of minute to pray for it to really sink in, and even then the most recent obsession didn't really start until I heard forever came today. anyways it's probably not a surprise to anyone on here but I fucking love this guy's bands.

Nobody asked for my opinion, I know, but I felt like sharing.

share away man. goes without saying but any and all criticism towards my band is highly acceptable...appreciated even.

awesome. old film's great at making dumb shit look good.

case in point: a buddy of mine has been making vids for us with a 16 mm camera, then taking the film and drawing all over it after accidentally leaving it on his floor for a month. made us this: https://vimeo.com/137090834, which is pretty much just 4 mins of us standing around/recording a track, rolling smokes and looking ultra serious. 100% less fun than the above onions video but cool lookin nonetheless, specially if yr into fast moving black and white squiggles.

gotta get my super 8 working, I've had it for years and have still done shit all with it.

finally relistening to this since the thread first started up. it's great fuck the haters and hypers simultaneously. definitely wouldn't want to listen to it on repeat, but they make what they're doing work well when the potential for it to be terrible is immensely high (and let's not forget that's the name of the record). just like the first one, there's some great fucking songs on here. I see now that Shogun is that skinnny guy from the live in sydney Low Life vid I watched repeatedly last summer. I have a great appreciation for his facial expressions.

Makes me think they're trying to make me think that life is beautiful or something.
ya know, they're not a hardcore band man.

now gimme a new Bed Wettin Bad Boys lp so I can get my full fix of aussie rock in 2015.

can't believe I didn't think of this before but second on my list would definitely have to be Belleville ON, because my girlfriend's cousin was murdered there.

ottawa for third. all in ontario what a surprise.

hey I saw voivod in moncton last month and the venue was a helluva lot fancier than anything we've got in halifax. big stage, low lighting, and an upper level chill zone with leather seats. ideal for a metal show.

nice pic.

Which singer do you like better on Ain't It Fun? I had this argument years ago with a friend. I said Bators, he said Thomas. I conceded to choosing Thomas over Bators on Sonic Reducer, even though today maybe I'd reconsider. I'm not talking about the whole songs, just the singers.

I choose bators over thomas any day on "sonic reducer". I can accept the weirdness of thomas's voice in the context of ubu, but if there's ever a chance to hear someone else sing any song he does I'll take it. love ubu, especially love rocket from the tombs, love dave thomas himself even, but I often wish he just played the tambourine or something and someone else sang. laughner's is without a doubt my go-to "aint it fun" (especially the "aaawww gawwwwwd"). there's a lot of ubu/thomas stuff I still haven't checked out though.

woah just realized that the wolf howl at the end of "baby ice dog" was used as the signature sound tag for the classic rock (and nu rock harharhar) radio station I used to listen to growing up in the peterborough, ON area. have definitely heard that howl thousands of times.
