whitehouse is great. went through a pretty big whitehouse 'phase' for about 6 or 7 years.
still dig em very much, all of the records, each incarnation. there's not really much bad in the whole lot of it. i liked a lot that they would do a couple albums that sounded like they were treading similar waters, then move on to make a few more albums that sounded completely different but in their own sound. and it seemed to progress all the way to the end. birthdeath experience is a great album, racket is a great album, and so are all the ones in between.
saw em twice a couple years ago, spaced by about 6 months between shows. almost went on a road trip to see em in ohio in 01, but they cancelled. then they seemed to have this bout where they would announce shows here and there and then cancel them a few weeks after announcing them. when the night came to finally see them, it was like christmas as a child or something. i was so anxious that i ended up drinking way more than i should have, and when i was standing up front waiting for them to come out and actually play the thought crossed my mind that i was probably too drunk and maybe i should go throw up in the toilet, but realized i probably wouldn't have as good a spot in the front if i went to do that. got an inside tip that the venue had 'hired' plainclothes security to keep things in control, as in the past violence was a HUGE factor in the live show and the last time they played there in the early '90s they had to escape and hide in the upper level of the building and the main floor was covered in broken glass. security kept the crowd pretty normal, though only a minute into things a girl who i found out came out from missiouri started a fight with three people, including me who she choked. pretty awesome.
my only complaint was that when the time came for william to belt out the final line to the song of the same name, instead of screeching "WHY YOU NEVER BECAME A DANCER!" he quietly mumbled "why.. you... never.. became.. what.. you... wanted.. to.. be." got over that pretty quick though.
the show a few months later was pretty much the same set, though they replaced 'rock and roll' with 'tit pulp'...
consumer electronics played in chicago a few months ago. i don't listen to the recordings as much (well, the old stuff is way different, and the new record he did the other year is 2 side long instrumentals) but at the live show philip had the same energy/vocal delivery he did with whitehouse. pretty solid 15 or so minute set. before the show started they played the peter sotos 'movie' WAITRESS which i had been pretty interested in for a couple years since i heard he had been playing it at readings in europe and a couple other places. seemed to make plenty of people uncomfortable/bored, but there was a small amount of people who watched it all the way through as well. ended up getting invited to go out drinking with peter and philip afterwards, which was pretty surreal to say the least...
never got into incapacitants though. that ad is funny though, 'box is stupid' is a great title.
