It would not have mattered.  Germany ripped them apart.

It's hard to say what would have happened if that goal was allowed. Maybe England would have gained some confidence and gone on to destroy Germany. So, yes, it COULD have mattered....but we'll never know.

Here is some interesting research on corporate lobbies and their impact on public policy. I recognize that some will scoff at this accademic research, but at least read it and become a little smarter...I recognize that this is not the main topic of this thread, deal with it.

I'm not suggesting that corporations have not accumulated influence in the halls of congress. In fact, some research in business, economics, and political science shows that they do have some influence. I merely think that instead of bitching about lobbying, corporations, and capitalism, as most stupid Americans do, they should realize that there are other actors in play, namely congressional representatives who are in their position to represent their constituencies....I would keep on writing, but the masses piss me off with their endless complains about corporations and the free market...so thats it.

Sorry man, I am very much informed, not some idiot spouting off anti-corporate garbage for the hell of it. That monkeycage "research" is a joke. It's source is a corporate lobbyist crying about how his profession is misunderstood. NBER tries to come off as some non-biased think tank of econ research, but it is just another free marketeer front and so it goes on. Do you really expect anyone who knows anything about economics to think they are going to get anything critical of the free market from University of Chicago economists? Really, your academic research is little more than free market propaganda. Christ, did you read the monkeycage thing you posted? It is rudimentary at best.

1. The Monkey Cage is a poli sci blog run by four or five political science professors. There is a thing called interviews, where scholars go talk to individuals to gauge their opinion on certain topics. Qualitative records are a common tool in the social sciences. I'm not saying more than that, don't care myself for social science methodology (as an engineering accademic), but it has provided important insights into political topics.

2. "another freemarkeeter front" - yes, there are people who believe that capitalism allows people to have economic freedoms and engage in wealth producing activities. There are policy makers and accademics who know more than the common man, and this is why we are in positions of power and influence.

3. Go travel to a third world country sometime and talk to people there. Go to places like Chile where people did not have private property rights for many decades. Go to parts of India where communist governments stifle entrepreneurship. Talking with people around the world ("interviews" and surveys) show that people around the world embrace capitalism. They embrace corporations and entrepreneurship. So it's not just a small clique of Chicago economists who are pushing free market policies, it's what many people throughout the world (and the U.S.) want.

Jesus. It's the group stage. Spain just went down to Switzerland the other night. France will probably go out before the knockout begins. They were finalists in 06, remember? Everyone "sucks" at this point. The US hasn't lost yet, and came back from 2nil down to 3-2 in the second half. That's not been done before.
Their system is lousy, sure, but at this point in the tournament they're performing much better than I had expected.

1. European teams are dropping like crazy - just proves that european soccer is overrated. However, teams from south america have been great (for the most part)

2. the US hasn't lost yet, but it hasn't won either - it hasn't received three points yet.

I was just wondering how many of you still buy/read actual printed publications?

Kevin can read article after article on the computer but for some reason I just can't do it.  I much prefer reading something that is printed and that I can hold in my hand.

Also, there is just something to be said about spending a Sunday afternoon with a big mug of coffee and the thick ass Sunday Times.

Anyone? Anyone?  Or does everyone get their news exclusively online now?

I just read the news online.

However, I have a subscription to Business Week, which is a magazine. used to get the Economist.

At the end of the day, is anyone really surprised that U.S. soccer SUCKS!!!!!

Stolen or not, they suck....I predict that Algeria will beat them....then I can watch a bunch of Americans whine about some stupid shit ("FIFA is Anti-America - ha ha ha) - people make excuses when they just can't recognize that they suck....deal with it

English?

The silence after the third match today is a good enough answer from Tony.

acctually, I'm American. I'm just not delusional or nationalistic, and don't go around to tea party rallies chanting "usa, usa, usa..."
