Thanks for the link, that looks useful. I'll look into it.

I don't clean the head very often, to be honest. But the problem has always been there regardless. And if it was a dirty head, wouldn't it affect all tracks and all kinds of tape? This is just on a specific track and not with every type of cassette.

The head is broken down into four strips. That said, these machines are fickle with what type of tape you give em. I tried using a certain kind in the one I have and the recorder wouldn't even engage the tape. It was a brand new tape...

Maybe Officer Officer Brad X might have some insight?

This all said there could be a litany of issues on the channel strip thats beyond my scope of knowledge.

Do you have a place in the area that services cassette decks? It probably would be very expenssive to get them to find the issue and fix it.

i have a hard time believing its the tape.  a real hard time, lol.  mine its all about the moving parts, my mic/line - off - tape switches are rough.  the stereo outs are busted.  but a tape formula should not affect recording in that way.  not to my knowledge.  i've used alot of tape machines, never heard or had that particular problem.

and yeah, the norb stuff was, to me, a detour.  like, we were headed in a direction, then he joined, and i had to write differently for awhile.  i also had to work with band members who could actually show up for gigs and rehearsal.  we played alot of gigs and rarely practiced.  in a way, we were mostly on hold for several years.  i believe every song we wrote was released on vinyl.  but towards the end, we were writing one or two songs in an entire year while maintaining a full gig schedule.  and norb had been unemployed but once he started working he missed a whole year of band practice.

now, with no gigs, and our next record in the can, we have alot of space to do whatever.  i play with a couple different drummers and bass players and am able to write stuff that has a bit more substance, as we have the time to develop the material.  i feel like we picked right back up where we left off when he joined the band, its a good feeling, i dont feel like we lost anything, just, like i said, a detour.

norb, to me, was a hero growing up.  boris the sprinkler, eh, not a huge fan.  but suburban mutilation i loved, and i was in a band with the other dudes from depo provera, so i always said "i'm not in a band with the singer from boris the sprinkler, i'm in a band with the guy from suburban mutilation"
