making tapes is how i first started making some cash off my old music, i was unemployed and started a "tapes on demand" label, but it seemed like people were more interested in downloads. i had always just given my old shit away for free, but i figured, hey, if people want to pay for it, why not? for a couple years i would make $30-50 a week selling tapes, CDr's and downloads. i didnt want to pay an aggregator to put it on itunes and shit, but when i saw the bandcamp deal it seemed legit. they take 15% of actual revenue, so there's no upfront cost and they only take when you get paid, which is immediately, you dont have to wait for quarterly payments or whatever. i like that i can set it up to stream for free and still get paid for/sell downloads.
and yeah, i am leery about labels getting digital distribution rights, because i know it costs nothing to distribute shit online and its a potential endless stream of revenue (regardless of how tiny that stream may be!). typically i make a deal for a number of physical records and thats it. i prefer not to even negotiate repressing until the time comes. that was an issue when nanne tepper put out the evolutions lp, he got all pissed when i posted some songs online after the record was released, and its like "hey, i never offered you the songs in perpetuity" hahaha. the only licensing i do is for a set number of physical copies of a record, i think there is less to get confused about if you keep things simple.
