Proverbs is required reading for anyone interested in Literature. I would also suggest a run through Psalms and to at least read The Ten Commandments in Exodus. And then dip into John. Even if you think it's bullshit, KJV Bible is very well written and it is a historical document. If things get confusing, cross reference it with a more updated version.
Psalms gives excellent, common sense advice about alcoholism, hanging out with the wrong crowd ("a companion of fools shall be destroyed"), listening to wise counsel and not being slothful. I cringe at the stuff about laziness, but it's true, and I only spot it because I got it. It gets some heat for being sexist, but as my last girlfriend pointed out, the bits about avoiding "strange women" could also apply to the dangers of "strange men" (pregnancy, etc.). It's a brutal lecture, but you will be better off after a good study.
As a certain drunk once said: "Be quick to see where religious people are right."
My new best friend is Sikh, and this is also a great tradition to look into if you are into religion. Particularly the five thieves.
