Does anyone ever find themselves playing/singing at weird/random/awkward social functions in their respective communities?
It came about somehow that I used to play in bands and whatnot in my younger years, and now I get asked to sing at weird little social events and church functions and whatnot here in my town. It's odd enough as is, but the fact that I barely even know or associate with the people who ask me makes it even weirder.
Anyway, tonight I sang some old country songs and other assorted 50's and 60's tunes for a grand total of 14 people (myself and wife included) at a Senior Citizens Center. The lady that asked me to come do it is the mother of one of my students, and I couldn't tell her no for whatever reason. It was surreal (not in an awe-inspiring way, obviously, but more like a weird dream-type sequence where you're not sure that you're actually doing what you're doing). It was just me and the ol' acoustic, a microphone that was attached to a podium (not a regular stand), forcing me to bend way over like a moron because I'm 6'6." Clapping after everything. Conversation with people I'd never met before. Strange.
I realize that this isn't too interesting of a story but I just wondered if anybody else ever gets roped into singing/playing at weird stuff like this. It happens to me much more frequently than I'd like, but I guess I have a hard time saying no to people.
