I expected it to be way lamer than it was, everything I listened to was at least worth the single listen it got and there is some cool stuff in there too like The Floor Above and Kitchen's Floor. My only question is if this is really how young people are finding out about new bands now? I mean, I know everyone uses Youtube, but do people use it like zine, or like people were using blogs not too long ago?
as a relatively young person a lot of it has to do with the same sort of things that were (presumably) going on in the 80s believe it or not. just now "tastemakers" are people with blogs or youtube channels so you can listen to the stuff before you buy into their hype. that being said a big thing in getting known is often still just being on a notable label (not normal tapes, lumpee), knowing people who are high on the social ladder (see: bands that get booked to play some huge fest after only playing 2-3 shows and maybe having a demo), or touring a lot. Youtube is used like a blog for some, yeah, but it hasn't replaced blogs or word of mouth. Jimmy has really been the first guy to do that properly, so we might see more of that in the future. Id say the thing I like about jimmy (and have personally benefited from) is he shares and enjoys stuff that doesn't have ANY hype or social-status attached to it (on top of sharing some stuff that does), bands that aren't on some hype label or don't even tour.
anyways im friends with jimmy and hes introduced me to more bands than i can name so i love the guy.
