For the record I would like to make clear that I was saying nothing about the relative merits of Culo or Tarantula (or Bleeding Gums) musically. I do think Man Eaters actually sux tho

What's the grace period for late 2018 release posting? Biiiiig into this Priors LP: https://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-lp-7

I seem to remember my copy of that sounding pretty assy, for what it's worth. Not like there isn't ample documentation of Kaleidoscope's existence that you need to drop $10+ on a very low quality live bootleg via Australia.

Wow very chicago thread so far. Mock Execution is some fire, saw them a week or so ago and they killed everyone. Man Eaters is mad stupid.  Maybe I'm biased cuz I know who is in it but idk man, there is definitely better stuff than the new chicago punk n roll band that only started cuz these dumbasses got rejected from DIY for various reasons so now they can at least play to 21+ bro punks at reggies or chop shop or whatever.

Anywho, Milwaukee is going the fuck off https://gangstalkermke.bandcamp.com/releases

Banque Allemande rules. Way under-appreciated band. I discovered them on accident when I ordered a Spray Paint record from S-S like 5 years ago and they sent me a CD of the second BA album with it. Instantly hooked on it, but I might like the first lp better.

Also, I had for some reason convinced myself I didn't like U-Nix but Nuke Portland fuckin rips

Oh yeah while I'm here, that Chronophage LP is instant classic American underground rock and roll. Seriously, highest recommendation to anyone who likes the Meat Puppets, Erics Trip, Home Blitz, Dinosaur Jr, the Wipers, Dead Moon, Milk Music... Bits and pieces all remind me of a pretty wide array of my favorite, most formative shit without any of it obviously ripping anything off. I haven't spun a new rock record this much in years.

Had no idea there was more than one Circuit Rider lp. Hell yeah

Non-Music Shit / Re: what are you reading?

^ good one. Was a bit on the absurd side to really hit me hard but I still love a book that manages to balance humor/being pretty heavy.

I'm reading Madame Bovary. Every character is pretty stupidly aggravating, which I enjoy.

Cities / Re: Chicago

Little Village and Pilsen are where you'll find the best mexican food in the midwest. Also great Puerto Rican food in Humboldt Park; I'm partial to Borinquen Lounge on Western but there's definitely more. Chinatown is always sorta fun but there's a slightly lesser known Asian neighborhood in Uptown around Argyle and Broadway where there's awesome dim sum and Chinese bakeries--I think Chiu Quon is thee spot. Edit: I dunno how far north you're willing to go, but for Indian/pakistani, Devon ave in west ridge is way sick. Fun to explore if you've got time to kill.

double edit: oh yeah I guess if you want "Chicago food" you obviously have a million places to get a hot dog. Portillos is a tourist trap. I like Jim's Original off Roosevelt, Red Hot Ranch on Western and Hamburger Heaven on Archer. Most actual Chicagoans would probably find even those recs pretty basic. You don't need to go to Portillos is my point.

If you're there in May that'll definitely be well into the annual summer show clusterfuck, so no shortage of offerings there either.

I know I'm in the minority but I like Chicago.

Cities / Istanbul
« on: July 15, 2018, 08:59:16 AM »
I dunno, this may be a long shot, but I'm in Istanbul for like another three weeks. There's no shortage of cool shit to do, even if I'm just wandering around the city or eating a kebab. The abundance of sights and activities has been pretty overwhelming. I've actually yet to pay to enter any sites since I got here (I did a fair amount of touristing when I came here on vacation years ago).

Record stores are easy to find in certain neighborhoods. I think they jack up the prices on all the cool Anadolu rock records knowing foreign nerds like me dig that shit. So it's sorta fun to buy a greater quantity of cheap records that I'm less familiar with.

I went to a "punk" show at a bar in Taksim that was just these sorta pitiful 30-something expats and a singer wiggling around like a very tame, half assed Iggy. I also went to a Selda Bagcan concert at a big outdoor theater which was mildly interesting. She played more kinda melodramatic, commercial folk stuff and none of the psych rock stuff I know, which wasn't really a surprise. I knew she had a pretty vast discography but I guess she's more well known in Turkey in 2018 than I realized, and not for the stuff that gets sampled in rap songs in the US. Anyway, the best musical experiences have been pure happenstance, hearing guys playing regional folk styles in parks, on the street, etc. I met these guys from Iranian Baluchistan who I had stopped to listen to in a park--dudes had me misty eyed, no lie. But this is the biggest city in Europe. There have to still be rockers somewhere right? I'm finding that I miss that shit here. (This is admittedly a very minor complaint. I still have internet access, obviously.)

I guess I'm just fishing for any tru hed insider knowledge that might be available here. Or just basic shit I may be ignoring. Even though I'm alone a lot, it's hard to get bored in a megacity that incessantly overloads my senses. I find that personal suggestions have been way more reliably worthwhile than fucking with google or my guidebook.

So yeah, tl;dr where is the best crate dig, is there a diy-type scene that any users of this board are aware of, what's yr favorite mosque?

Do you guys like the band Chronophage? I do.

I'm alllll about this Floor Above LP: https://notnormaltapes.bandcamp.com/album/nnt-061-the-floor-above-assault-on-still-life-lp

Also been listening to Simply Saucer a lot because I guess I need bonehead guitar music all the time. Dunno how this shit hasn't gotten old but it's like the air I breathe these days.

All the shit the Shifters have been putting out recently has been in constant roto. Very excited for that LP and hoping they tour the US.
