They refer to a label's status as a 'major' (ie owned by a larger corporation as its music wing) or 'independent' (ie autonomous and not belonging to a larger corporation). Labels like Zomba were hugely successful indies releasing music by the likes of Britney Spears, although the predictable result is that indies on this sale usually sell themselves to majors.last time I checked sub-pop is distributd by Warner ADA so.

Mark Arm from Mudhoney actually works in the Sub Pop warehouse and has since the 1990s. He ships all the Sub Pop stuff out all across the globe. Pretty cool and punk job (dummy - me?). I think he's Sub Pop's only full-time warehouse employee and if you get a record in the mail by mail-order then it's propably signed by him.
Can mess with TAD. This is forever.
