NMA are/were one of my fave bands of the 80s by far--they were pretty unique and powerful, I'm not sure what the 'something special' you're looking for may be.  Nice info on Cromwell's boys!

Scott, what's your take on New Model Army (the band AND the military force)?

When we were doing Hatefuck, Nate would always get really pissed when I'd write songs that just had one simple bass riff grooving through the whole song. He thought I was implying he was stupid. It's too bad too, cause he actually is stupid and if he wouldn't have been afraid to sound like the neo-caveman he is we would have been a better band.

HAHAHA!!!  Dude, Hatefuck was SO fucking good with Tim towards the end, you don't even know.  Alas, not with a bang but with a whimper, eh?  Fuckin shame either way.

I really like what you had to say about Birthday Party influences.  I want my band to do a song where the rhythm section's pounding groove carries the thing (BP/Scientists/AmRep stuff) but I don't think those two guys could stand to bury themselves in riff repitition in order to enter the trance-like state that such a song requires.  Oh well.

What's your take on double-kick drums?  Can you immediately name any bands or specific records you like that utilize them?

Brewers over Pirates because their four starters match up as well as any other group in the NL, top to bottom. Three of them are young 200-inning strikeout pitchers who haven't peaked yet. If they have a position player have a breakout year, like Rickie Weeks or even Cecil's spawn, they could win 90 games easy and sneak in as the wild card over the Giants. Hell, if the Cardinals have injuries and luck sticks to the Brewers they could even take the division.

You got it in a nutshell right there.  Hell, if Sheets hadn't been out so many games last year you coulda tacked on four more wins in '05.  I absolutely see a Division title as a realistic goal for the Brew Crew this season.

Music Shit / Re: Which MySpace band do you personally want to destroy?

The Pink Spiders played at Barely Legal two years ago and were excellent--our friend Josh from Alabama Jihad was filling in on 2nd guitar at the time and their self-released 12" 'Pink Spiders are taking over' was one of my favorites of 2004.  The music on their myspace page bears no resemblance to that performance or that record, unfortunately.  Funny, when I was in Alabama last month I happened to ask about PS and was flabbergasted to hear they had been signed to Geffen and were jetsetting around the country recording their album.  No more Milwaukee house shows, I guess.

Hagar was/is obviously a Stalinist commie but that's okay because at least he saved Van Halen.

I actually owned "Living Eyes" for about ten years before I had a chance to even hear "Radios Appear" so you can see why it had a profound effect on me in comparison to the weaker second album--I felt the hype WAS justified once I finally heard "RA".

You know, as much as I respect Sammy Hagar as an artist, he had a song called "There's Only One Way To Rock" and I have always respectfully disagreed with this sentiment although it would appear that many of you don't.

If you must compare albums from bands based on location and era, I honestly don't see why someone who loves "Eternally Yours" wouldn't love "Radios Appear" as well.  Both are well-crafted, well-recorded and possess a variety of unique styles that each band pulled off successfully.  I actually don't much care for the comparative three-chord meatgrinder of the "Stranded" album just because EY is so much more fulfilling.

This ice cream sucks because it doesn't taste like pizza and since they're both located in the frozen food aisle I feel compelled to make some sort of comparison.

Radios Appear is an All-Time Great Rock Album--probably in my personal top ten, even.  A unique sound, instantly memorable songs and enough variety to keep things interesting--"Man With Golden Helmet" is ESSENTIAL to the flow of that album and is a perfect halfway-point intermission piece.  I can and have listened to it repeatedly without getting sick of it and that's the true test of greatness--discovering new things with repeated plays.  Dunno what else to say--it's a classic.

Well I am fervently opposed to starting a band with the objective to straight-up copy another band or particular period so in that context, yeah it's the old "using it for good or evil" story.

I agree some amps are better than others, but people that worship Sunn, Orange, Marshall Stacks or whatever other thing, they're always going for exactly what those amps are apparantly made for, they generally have no ideas of their own and they're usually total douchebags who should just work behind a counter at a music store.

What's wrong with sounding how you wanna sound?  Gear nerds who can't create interesting music are awful but if someone's making a sound I particularly like onstage you can bet I'll ask him about his tools.  Is asking an artist about his brushes and paint being a gear nerd?  The 'how' is as important as the 'what' and 'why' of making music and you damn well know it.
