Music Shit / Re: VOLT

How did you mistake those names?

At the time, I had only seen the Youtubes of some basement shows for Lightning Bolt.  Then I forgot their name at the record store.
I kept trying to think, "Lightning, amperage, watts, ohms, something to do with electricity in general..."
Thus, I picked up Volt with "certainly this must be it" attitude.  Good band, but not what I wanted when I got home.

I mistakenly bought this record, thinking they were Lightning Bolt.  Totally not the same.

ChinaTownDan, your story reminds me of a good friend in Memphis.  Same deal, except, his crazy divorced mother kept poodles.  The big lion-hunting ones.  And they were horrific.  And their eyes dripped boogers all the time.  But they hated that kid.

I agree, there are many nasty little apps you can use to take over or mine info from a pc, but it also comes down to how well you lock it down, or your login privileges in a public network (depending on OS, as well).  For example, you should never login to a pc using the Windows admin user on a public network.  Depending on how the login script is configured, the pc/laptop will "advertise" to the network. looking for a server or service to connect to.  This info is typically encrypted, too, but it's Windows proprietary and can be unscrambled (also, there is no real authentication, which means the server or service can be spoofed).  Anyway, once you login with admin credentials, it can be sniffed, and the cracker could feasibly use it to gain permission to install key-loggers and bugaboos, or hack your file system.
Point being, if on a shared, un-secure network, create and use a user-type with the least amount of privileges.

These percautions are mainly intended for unsecured wireless hotspots (public places), but again, if you're "borrowing" someone else's signal at a more permanent location (i.e. the apartment scenario), it's best to err on the side of caution if you want to stay protected.

These incidents aren't super-common, but they do occur.

Let me qualify the yahoo thing, too.  Just the login is encrypted, so your username/password is safe.  After that, retrieving and sending messages could be sniffed and reassembled.

Sorry, SSL is a standard method of encrypting your packets and also authenticates (throughout the entire session) that you are who you are and the host is who the host is.
https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us uses SSL.  You'll know because of the "s" in the "https:" in the address.
In internet explorer, you'll also see a little "lock" symbol at the bottom of the browser.

I should also add that the above is in regard to hotspots and temporary access points (you only plan on being there temporarily).  For sponging off neighbors, it mainly comes down to your habits.  If you stay online when you are away, you leave yourself vulnerable.  On one hand you may be using bandwidth from grandma in apartment 2A who pays her bills online at the first of the month only, or you could be using Danny Hacker Jr. in 3G who swaps scripts at the local ITT and knows only enough to be dangerous.  It's a crapshoot.

Depends on what you want to keep secure.  The likelihood of being in a hotspot where someone is trapping or sniffing packets isn't too great (although it certainly does happen), and all they are going to do is read your traffic, possibly sniff your passwords.  They could spoof you or do man-in-the-middle attacks as well.
Logging into secure sites (using SSL) for e-mail, banking, message boards, or whatever is better because even though the hotspot is in the clear, the session between you and the site is encrypted.
Hacking into your laptop can be done, too, but that goes along with how hardcore you've got your machine locked down.

Cassettes are not going the way of the dinosaur:

Neither is reel-to-reel.  We usually order ours out of Nashville:

I'm not exactly sure why the "Midwest" is called the Midwest anyway.  It's really more of the Mid-Mid, I think.  Idaho, Montana, that Wyoming place, etc. on the other hand, I would think is really the Midwest.

There really is no good reason for Nashville, though, as far as the south goes...
