Music Shit / Re: Goat
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:13:00 PM »
Chicks look hot. Hey, even Swedes started in Africa. Pretty hot jams with nice lead tones, but not inspiring any fear of Papa Legba incorporating the flesh of the band or audience. Sun City Girls ethnic drag tended to fuck with the audience, at least sometimes. These folk would be welcomed at most college festivals. If they played around here I'd go, and have fun dancing........ Ah, minute 13 or so gets a little heavy and evil. Yeah, I dig. Guess I will pick up the record after all.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Movies I've been watching

I liked "Animal Kingdom", "Kill List" was way messed up and I had to turn my head away during the scene with the hammer and the hand. From descriptions read here I don't think  I'll be watching "Snow Town Murders".

The rad Punk music listener that doesn't like the original "Green Fuz" or "Primitive"? I can't even fucking imagine it. Sad day in America.

Reading "The Essential Neil Young" by Steve Grant on the toilet lately. A personal, and personable take by a Neil head on his favorite tracks. Guy's got some deep tracks and has me interested in pulling out the neglected LP's and tracking down some more bootlegs.

If it's that "Rock Goes to College" footage, I'd agree that it is pretty lame. They are out of tune and not happy at all if I remember correctly.

Not entirely sure why, but I'm now watching a Cars concert from 1978. First live Cars footage I've ever seen, I'm pretty sure. Unless this was an off night, they're not a particularly great live act; Benjamin Orr looks bored, Ocasek is making Lou-lip puckers and ignoring the audience -- but Elliot Easton is giving tuff Gary Moore vibes and playing his ass off. Guy's a badass! His guitar parts sound for the most part exactly like they did on the record, proof that Roy Thomas Baker knows not to fuck with a good thing. Actually, the whole show is a pretty fine testament to the genius of RTB -- without the killer production, most of the songs sound like half-decent MTV fodder inna-new-wave-stylee that might make its way onto a top 100 c-down if some back-office VH1 bunny'd once fucked the keyboard player who looks like a leftover-blow version of my 6th grade school picture. "All Mixed Up" is still killer, though; more of a sleaze vibe, and leftover blow really wails on the sax (OK, he has a name. Greg Hawkes.) And "You're All I've Got Tonight" comes off pretty slick, too. Maybe I'm a dumb ass, but I didn't know Orr sang so many of these songs. Giving 'em the benefit of the doubt, whatever enthusiasm they might've had in the Mass. Ave. dayze obviously didn't translate to the sanitized environs of mid-sized venues.

Not "Big Nils"? Saw them a few months ago, not terrible.

Nils 7". Coco Gordon-Moore, 18, on vox. You think it blows but it doesn't.

That Record Store day Scepter Records VU LP was booted on LP recently too, right? Previous to this one? Don't want to re-buy, unless it sounds way better.

Here is a live video excerpt from the same show that was recorded and used for the LP.

Reposting for a friend/bandmate:

Greetings friends!

Hope you all had a great restful holiday yesterday, spent with family, friends, and lots of food/drink.  Speaking of thanks, now is as good a time as any to thank you each for your support of Tape Drift over the last few years.  We know how difficult it is to part with your hard-earned money, particularly in these times.  So any support you can provide to the label is massively appreciated.   As you may or may not know, we'll be going on temporary hiatus for much of 2013.  We'll be back of course, but things will be hold until at least September.

But in the meantime, we will have at least a few final 2012 releases to share with you.  The first is a brand new Century Plants one-sided live LP.  We're all incredibly excited about this record.  The records have arrived, are now being assembled in their jackets with special inserts, and will be shipped to you right away.  This is a limited pressing of 100 copies, and we hope you'll love it!

To purchase a copy, simply use paypal to this email (hardiman04@gmail.com) in the amount of $12 if you live in the U.S.  If you're in another country, just shoot us an email and we'll figure out the final cost with shipping.

CENTURY PLANTS - s/t (Tape Drift, 2012)
Century Plants deliver the goods here with a one-sided live LP (limited to 100 copies) that is a tribute/homage to British hardcore legends Discharge. A heartfelt and very sincere love letter to the punk spirit of 1982 if you will.  It?s a fitting concept, given that Century Plants member Ray Hare was part of that original era, as the lead singer for Washington DC?s Deadline. In fact, Hare?s deep roots in the punk scene (he appears on the seminal ?Flex Your Head? LP) make his vocal homage to Discharge even more appropriate.  Musically, Century Plants have updated the sound of 81/82, with a fully improvised approach, fuzz-drenched feedback, and lyrics that draw on several different Discharge songs. Most importantly, the spirit of blistering political dissent and anti-authoritarianism shines through, with Hare snatching Discharge concepts and phrases at will.  It all captures the energy and sonic assault of punk, yet filtered through modern-day noise, drone, and DIY strategies as well.  A unique item in their catalog, this is the second vinyl appearance for Albany, NY?s Century Plants, following a split LP with Locrian. Usually a duo (Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare), Century Plants are joined for this record by drummer Phil Donnelly. The three also play together as part of the singularly sprawling improv psych rock unit Burnt Hills.  Rather than continuing the ominous dronescapes of the split with Locrian, in this live recording Century Plants offer an intensely rockist track, melding several of their core influences (psych rock, punk, noise, and even dub) into one seething, energetic track.  Upstate Violence/Upstate Control?  PLAY LOUD!

Music Shit / Re: Laughing Hyenas

Only saw Laughing Hyenas once, opening up for Sonic Youth and Mudhoney at the Ritz! They were great, waves of hate just emanating offa Brannon! Easy Action are great too, live and on record! Brannon is as sick a vocalist as ever, if not more gnarly!

Ordered. Video is a little cringeworthy but I love me some Big Dipper. Saw them open for The Replacements at The Palace in Albany, open for Dinosaur Jr. (Bug era) at The Ritz NYC, and at Skidmore College with The Figgs.

I think there were several edits of Caligula. I heard Guccione "inserted" the porno scenes after the regular actors were finished shooting.

Sun Burdens EP, (local dark synth one man gang) I totally avoided this kinda stuff when I was young, but now I can get into it. Funkadelic, "Live in Rochester MI 1972"  First gig with new drummer and rhythm guitarist leads to some Cosmic Slop in parts but it's great overall! Royal Trux, "Twin Infinitives". Broke out the record for the first time since it came out, I think I wasn't ready for it then. still probably like the next self titled one better. So Cow on Tic Tac Totally. "Wha the fucking hell is this?" catchy as hell, where is this guy now? The Fluid, "Clear Black Paper". 10.99 Pier Platters sticker still on it. "Mother I'm freezing, it's probably 'cause it's cold outside"! Great song, great band, solid record.
