Revolve in Erskineville and Egg and Repressed in Newtown are within walking distance and are all worth a visit. Plenty of decent places to eat and drink around there too. Red Eye Records in the city is also worth checking out if you're in that area. It's also only a few minutes walk from Utopia (mostly metal) and Lawsons (mostly CDs). Those two are less essential but I have found good records in both shops in the past.
Without a doubt two of the worst named record stores in town are The Record Crate in Glebe and The Vintage Record in Annandale. Both can be OK and might be worth a visit if you find yourself nearby.

There's going to be a mini punk(ish) festival in Marrickville on Jan 15 / 16 called Nag Nag Nag. I'll post details when it's been made public. Here's what the last one looked like : http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/nag-nag-nag/74461

As trey mentioned, you should definitely set aside a good chunk of time to go through the Wallaby Beat blog if you haven't already. Lots of obscurities, some personal favs (in the powerpop category) being Beaut, Inserts, Marching Girls, Cartoons, Peculiar Clerk (or Perculiar Clerk), The Works.
