Non-Music Shit / Re: moving to the Bay Area help
« on: October 07, 2012, 06:14:38 PM »
I'm leaving SF for Austin at the end of November and my room in lower Haight will be opening up for Dec. 1st. $850/mo + utilities which is actually considered a pretty decent deal these days.  Send me a PM if you're interested.

And WOAH, WHAT?

WHEN/WHERE IS THE ERIC GOING AWAY PARTY?
I expect said party will last at least 2 weeks.

But yeah, tech wave #1 was nothing compared to what is happening now.

When I moved here in '99, seemed like there were still plenty of long term SF folks holding tight to their rent controlled apartments, and nobody wanted to live in the tenderloin or other seedier parts of SF.  In 2001 (2?) we were still able to score an ok 1 bedroom in Nob Hill for 1200.00.  Now that shit would likely go for 2400+, and you'd have to compete with a line of folks willing and able to pay cash.

Seems like any area that was slightly desolate has been built up with expensive "market rate" condos and apartments, and even the seediest parts of SF are quickly getting filled with high end bars and restaurants.

Oakland is even seeing the gentrification party. Plenty of "I'll never leave SF!" diehards are now moving to this side of the bridge, but for the time being you could likely find a place close to BART in the 1000-1200 range.  Living in Oakland requires a bike or car to get around. A/C transit and BART aren't cheap, and shit is too spread out to get by on foot and public transit alone (you could, but you'll want a faster getaway when you're walking home late at night)

I had one of these turds come up to me while I was playing records and ask if I could 'turn it down a smidge" because he and his friends were having a "meeting"

In a cafe.

On a fucking Sunday.

Whatever, asshat.

Somewhat related,

do the rest of you experience the occasional poorly sync'ed movies/shows on the netflix streaming?
Just had it happen with a pinball documentary. Made the thing unwatchable.

For those of you who are fans of modular/plastic furniture...
I've got a 2x2 version of these (in orange)They're bigger than the Ikea 2x2.. which means they hold more records.

Easy to build and break down.

this thread is like reading a Q&A from a 6th grade sex ed class
What's a clitoris?

As a term-broad I find this thread ridiculous.  I know how old some of you are, but seriously?
If you're fucking the same girl on the reg, I hope you're actually talking to her about this shit.

Yeah, the pull-out method can work fine ... until that one fateful night that the stars align.. and well, both abortions and babies are expensive not to mention painful and traumatizing. Hope you've got a few hundred dollars to spare.. and are ready to give the girl plenty of support.   Truthfully it's cheaper just to use a condom.  Can't afford any? Plenty of places will give you some for free. If I know you, maybe I will get you a box for Christmas.  Talk to the girl.  She might be down with getting on the pill, or getting an IUD or using some extra method to help reduce the risk of baby.

As for the vasectomy?  If you don't ever want kids, and your S.O. doesn't ever want kids.. go for it.
Personally I applaud any dude who is willing to do their part in keeping babies out of the picture, rather than making the woman do all the work.   As for the 'what if my girlfriend/wife 10 years from now want kids' question... well considering that studies are showing that old man sperm is often DEFECTIVE and has a higher chance of creating fucked up babies, better just get some of that shit preserved now (while it's still good).

<USPS / Sucky neighbor rant>
Since my mailman has repeatedly done me wrong, anything shipped without a tracking number has me on edge.   A few weeks ago my mailman cut off mail to my entire building because we had a bees nest above the mailbox. Apparently he got stung and had bad reaction and told my really annoying neighbor that all mail to our building was being held at the post office. Bitch never bothered to tell any of the rest of us that this was happening. I only figured it out when a shipment from Floria's Dying didn't show up, and I checked the tracking to find it in a 'out for delivery' state for 3 days. Called the post office 2x in one day, and finally someone was able to tell me what was happening.   THANKS FOR TELLING US, ASSHOLE.

(His normal thing is to attempt delivery but never bother leaving a note)

hey dude, all packages went out with tracking numbers. Just email me at info@wiredupbook.com with your name and I'll send you the tracking number.
I was holding off to see if a dude I know in the neighborhood managed to get his before i pestered you for it.
His arrived this morning, and mine was in the mailbox this afternoon.

This mailman is driving me up the wall.

A couple of things I think you're unfortunately too late to catch would be the combination Post Office / Ted Nugent Fan Club in Rosendale and the taxidermy museum housed in a funeral home basement in Madison. The taxidermy museum still exists, but I think the proprietor only allows the bereaved customers of the funeral home to check it out.
In the past they would let anyone in as long as you called in advance to schedule a time.  I called the funeral home a few weeks ago (before I headed to WI for a weekend) to find out what was going on, and got the following information: The basement is being remodeled, I don't think the taxidermy is even there right now, and Sam Sanfilippo's family is looking for a new space to put it all.  If you've ever been down there, you'd know that this is a HUGE undertaking. The taxidermy filled multiple rooms.. but there were also plenty of pictures of Sam and all of his drinking buddies. I doubt that all of his personal items will move with the taxidermy, and that's a shame. It really added to the story.

I'm semi-hoping the Freshwater fishing hall of fame in Hayward takes it, but if that happens it's likely I'll never get to see it again.  Too bad.  See those weirdo attractions while you can!

I came up from LA for the S-S thing and was really surprised by how few weed shops there are in SF.  I walked around the area of the Hemlock for a couple hours and never found one.  In LA there's a dispensary every hundred yards so I guess I take that shit for granted.

I think there's more in Oakland, especially since there's an actual area for it -- Oaksterdam.
I can't really think of that many around Oakland either... at least not in North Oakland.  It may be "legal", but I've read the angry emails from neighborhood people trying to stop them from moving in.

Storing singles is the real problem for me. I can't bring myself to ordering those white cardboard boxes because of years spent dealing with the exact same type of box collecting comics as a kid. Too many memories stored up in that type of box, plus they're ugly as sin to leave laying around.

I had/have the same problem with 7" boxes laying around, and I came across a post that recommended these for 7" storage:

http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/mobile_product_detail.jsp?tcin=13217121&keywords=Closet

It was on sale at the nearest store, so I bought 1 to see how it would look.  Probably took about 40 minutes to assemble, and I was able to fit close to 300 7"s in the whole thing.  Only cons are you have to remove the shelf to reach the 7"s in the back, and they can be fairly expensive if you want multiple units.

The guy who recommended it posted the picture below, which is what sold me on it:

I'm really tempted to get on of those. Mine 7"s are currently being stored in plastic tubs with lids (helps keep the dust and cat fur off of them), but I'm not super stoked with how it looks.

Stacking cinder blocks and boards is not a custom-built wooden shelf, and looks shittier than an expedit.

so you say. they look sharp in my basement, the bottom row is off the floor for "flood insurance", easy to assemble/disassemble, don't have to worry about them collapsing, and i have an extra $100+ to spend on records. but you're right this is not a custom-built wooden shelf and it looks shittier than an expedit. it just happens to work for me.

They're easy to disassemble, but the damn wooden boards and cinder blocks are heavy as shit and take up too much room.  Dave was determined to keep using that setup when he first moved here, but gave up after realizing that it was simply taking up too much space.   Using a combination of Cubitec shelves (plastic modular shelves from DWR, purchased on the cheap through craigslist) and a few 2x2 ikea shelves,  his records now actually fit into their allotted space.
