i always try to tip a dollar a drink and 20% on food when i get good service. when we toured with the fatals they flat out refused to tip anywhere we went because apparently that's not something that's done in france? we were always tipping double to try and cover up for them.
damn europeans. Nothing more annoying than tourist season in the service industry. it's as bad as prom night (i worked places where we added in the 18% on prom night, because otherwise we would have been working for our measly 2.13/hour and no tips)
As for tipping vs. non tipping
I'm trying not to rant, but I can't help it.
Have any of you worked in the service industry?
Do you know why food and drinks don't cost even more at resaurants and bars? Because they pay the servers/bartenders total shit, and expect them to make their income via tips.
Yeah, you can make awesome money some nights, and make total dogshit the next. It's not a 'stable income' by any means. Get hurt while working (easy to do in a land of slippery floors and sharp objects), and welcome to worker's comp where they pay 40% of your hourly wages (which isn't shit) until you're recovered. No health insurance, no vacation, no paid time off. Put up with people abusing you for 8 hours (or more) each day. Many places don't even provide a break. I ate more meals standing over a trash can when I worked restaurants (often not getting fed at all, because the kitchen would be close before my shift was over, and that meant no dinner for me. Oh well, there's always a shift drink)
Yeah, you might get a free drink off a bartender, but many restaurants and bars place cameras in the bar, so they can catch bartenders giving away free drinks. (and some go as far as putting microphones behind the bar). If you get a free drink, make sure to TIP, and maybe you'll get another one... but don't EXPECT a free drink.
Personally, I get my fair share of free drinks.. or STRONG drinks (from male and female bartenders), but I'm an easy customer and tip 1.00 per round (of 1-3 drinks). I know how to catch a bartender's attention (by looking at them attentively, and having my money out and ready, know what I want when they come to me, call things in order, and don't do stupid things like yelling 'hey bartender!' or whistling, or whatever else I see folks do)
Bartenders who stand 'expecting' a tip? I don't think I've ever dealt with one of those, but I always tip.. so maybe it doesn't really affect me either way. And as any bartender/server will tell you "if you can't afford to tip, stay at home"
Yes, it's bullshit that every other fast food chain now has a tip jar on the counter. I won't tip you for my muffin, or a cup of coffee. I will tip for a stupid fancy ass coffee drink. I also tip cabbies.
anyway. end rant.
