Christ. I ended up just doing regular USPS shipping and the person was fine with it.

I'm a girl (not necessarily a hot one) who rarely wants to have a conversation with a stranger about any shirts or buttons I happen to be wearing.

"Uhh.. yeah, that's really interesting."

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: BAY AREA: Shows coming up
« on: April 30, 2013, 07:19:44 PM »

Looking forward to a show I can walk to / stumble home drunk from.

For all of you not in the east bay, Mosswood park is in North Oakland.  It used to be total sketch, but over the past few years it's become the East Bay equiv of Dolores park (but nowhere near as crowded/annoying)

It's a few blocks away from 1234 Go, BART, and multiple bus lines.

Love the fact that these shows are only 5 bands.

Do you know what part of LA and/or SF you'll be staying in?

In LA, traffic is your enemy.

In SF, parking is your enemy.  Ditch the car before or as soon as you get into town.

Hey all-
I'm headed on a road trip 5.3-5.16 and looking for fun stuff to do... mainly shows, cool bars and good places to eat. Any ideas??

Also, touristy: I'm trying to visit every stupid roadside attraction ever.

Rough ETA::

5.3-5.6 Chicago
5.7-5.8 Boulder
5.9-5.11 Las Vegas
5.12-5.16 LA/ San Francisco

We're pretty flexible about timing, but this is probably close to the plan. All help 100% appreciated

The Vegas/LA/SF agenda is pretty ambitious, considering the amt of driving between the 3 places.

1/2 day - 1 day in Vegas is really all you need
Vegas > L.A. = 4-6 hours depending on traffic.  Are you aiming for anywhere specific in LA?
L.A. > SF = 6-12 hours depending on traffic and the route you choose

5 will get you to SF the fastest (6-8 hrs) but your roadside attractions will be In&Out Burger, farmland, and cowschwitz.

101 takes a bit longer, but better scenery and more places for stopping on the way.

101 > 1  takes a LOT longer, but you get spectacular ocean views. It's not the best route for those who get motion sick from windy roads or those who are afraid of heights. I'd break it into 2 days if you opt for 101 > 1

101 > 1 Route

Central Coast Stops:

San Luis Obisbo > Madonna Inn for coffee/dessert (if you're feeling spendy, stay in one of the themed rooms for the night. (this is your weird roadside attraction)

Morro Bay > stop in this town for a little while, and take a walk along the ocean to the rock.  Love it.

San Simeon State Park > Pull over and check out the Elephant Seals (I think it's better during the winter when the mammoth male seals are fighting it out on the beach).

Monterey/Cannery Row.  Touristy, but I enjoy some touristy.  AWESOME (but pricy) aquarium.

What about raer spoons?

Go look at my auctions..a good 2 pages of spoons, forks, and knives. Those raers sell themselves!

You'll be happy to know that my etsy shop is named "dishcogs".

Non-Music Shit / EMS Shipping?
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:12:43 PM »
I just had a Japanese ebay auction winner ask for an EMS shipping quote.

I typically only use USPS, because it's fast (for me) and easy.
What the hell is EMS?

I'm about to cancel this thing if it takes me more than 5 minutes to figure out.

Avoid travel during peak times (summer and obvious holidays) if you can avoid it.

The two weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are dirt cheap and far less stressful.
If you want to go to Hawaii wait until Feb/March (it's cheaper for me to fly to Hawaii than Madison)

Traveling rules!

One thing that speaks for Americans for travelling is the culture of just quitting a job and get a new one. People in Europe usually have a job and they work for the same company for their whole life. Nobody here dares to just quit. In America that seems like a normal thing to do. So it'd be easy enough, if you've saved up some money, to travel if you want. Plenty of people do it.

I don't know of many people over the age of 30 who just up and quit a job without some sort of back-up plan.

And most jobs in America are fading away.. so it's a little more difficult to find companies where anyone has been there forever (even government jobs)

10 Day Vacation!?!? Lol, those do not exist in America.

Depends on where you work and the company you keep.  I accrue 10 hours vacation/month and receive comp time when I work overtime. Due to a huge project this past winter, I'm sitting on close to 4 weeks of vacation (and keep earning more each month), so I'm planning a series of long trips.  Last year I was in WI for 7 (?) days.  I was also in NY for 7 (+?) days.  Airfare for each was 200 r/t.

Just picked off a cheapish flight to PDX, so I'm headed there for 5 days.

It definitely helps that I'm traveling alone, and typically pick destinations where I can stay with friends/family for cheap.. but air fare from here isn't that pricey.  I can typically find tickets to any desintation for under 300.00 r/t Most of the people I know travel on a regular basis. Even if it's nothing more than weekend road trip (or camping trip).

People usually only go to the carribean for honeymoons. I have never met a single american in my life that regularly travels to the carribean. Even people that I know that are from Puerto Rico only make the trip about once every few years or for very special occasions (marriage, funeral, baby birth (MAYBE), etc.)

One of the term-broads used to travel to the carribean on the reg.. but it was for scientific research.
My other friends were just there on a cruise (for fun, not for a honeymoon) I don't think I know anyone who goes to the Carribean on their honeymoon.
Another term-broad on here goes to Puerto Rico at least 1x/year.

If you travel during the off-season, none of these destinations are that expensive.. including Europe.

When traveling is a priority, you figure out ways to do it often and for as long as possible.

I've got a few options of people who I will likely try to hit up for a place to stay, but they live pretty far on the outskirts.

Any PDX folks who live nearby the club, you want to make some money by renting out a couple of rooms in your apartment/house for a few days?
