Don't mail yr records. Bomba's story will make you cry.

Yup.  Shit sucked really bad.  I finally managed to replace everything of note that was lost, sans a few hardcore LP's.

In hindsight, I would have bought a van in SF for $2K-3K and then just sold it when I got here.  Shit, you could probably even make a profit or at least make the money back you spent on gas.  That is if it doesn't blow up en route.  People on the east coast get stoked on California cars.  Flip that shit!

Why do you need all your records here anyway?  You'll most likely end up back in California eventually, right?  Also, the money it will cost to ship your drum kit is probably the same as just  buying a new one here.  Store your shit at your parents in Ventura.  Just bring your cymbals and hardware.  Do you have a room or practice space lined up yet?  Apartments are usually pretty tiny.  Last room I lived in was so small I couldn't open up my futon without smashing into my records.

This is some solid advice... especially if you don't have a lot of $$.

Looking at those blogs makes me want to go back to Tokyo NOW! Also, any maps are super useful for finding stores in Japan, that's one confusing address system they have.

Aya is pushing me to go there with her and Robert.   I think I'd be down for doing this next year. Having someone who can read the signs and speak the language would be super helpful

Uhaul has a U-Box option:

http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/RatesUBox.aspx
2200.00
Dimensions: 8' X 5' X 7'6" (LXWXH)
Capacity: 300 cubic ft
Your U-Box can hold up to 2,000 lbs.

It's cheaper than the u-haul 10' truck option (2254.00 is the base cost.. doesn't include gas)

Dan:

This is the upack option: http://www.upack.com/moving-services/other.asp
Talk to Dave about it.  For a fee, he might even help you pack the truck (he's a pro).  You'll need to get some racheting (sp?) straps and if you have anything you don't want damaged, stockpile some moving blankets (or cheap blankets from the thrift store you work for).

We had to meet the truck in East Oakland (you could stop and pick up some cheap day labor en route, if you're so inclined)

Look for the 'terminal to terminal' moving option. That's the cheapest route.  (ouch.  Just looked up the cost and 5' of trailers space from SF to BK,NY = 2600.00)

You can rent space in a larger truck. You simply have to pack and unpack the section on your own.
Dave moved all of his possessions from Iowa to CA in this manner, and I think it cost him around 1k.
I think his possessions at the time included a small couch, dining room table and chairs, at least 20 boxes of LPs and singles, and some other miscellaneous furniture and personal items.

The pain in the ass part is unpacking the truck (you have to meet the truck on a specified day and unpack it into another vehicle to then transport the items to your place.  This means unpacking a truck, packing a new truck, and then unpacking it again. It's a long day.

A conversation with Denkinger last night resulted in some google searching for Japanese record stores.. and down the endless rabbit hole of Japanese Record Store Blogs.

Fascinated with the Record Store Map books. Anyone own these?

Just got back from getting round 1 of the work done.

3 hour appointment. Paid for 2 rounds of nitrous.  Shit was super painful.  Had to prop my mouth open with a bite guard (tooth #31....... tooth at the very bottom/back of my mouth.  Sucked).   The base of the roots of the tooth were all infected (which explains why my gums were so puffed up for the past 2 weeks).

Round 2 is on Tuesday.

Getting laid off could be awesome if you don't have a lifestyle that requires more money than what you'll get in unemployment.  (ie: expensive rent, credit card debt, etc) and if you don't have health conditions that require purchasing cobra (that's what did me in)

Put your student loans in forbearance.
Sublet your apartment and put your shit into storage (or move in with your parents)
Get on food stamps, and enjoy life!

I had a coworker that moved to China after he was laid off.
His roommate kept sending in and signing all of his unemployment forms, so he was able to continue to collect the benefits while drastically cutting his personal expenses. I think eventually he found work through another ex-coworker.
Smart dude.

On the other hand, getting laid is not that bad.

You could combine your getting laid off with getting laid on the reg.

Ahhhhhhhh back to the dentist... this time i found out that 2 of my back teeth (with old childhood fillings) are craacked and require crowns. I had the valium and nitrious again today.. and within an hour of leaving, i was in serious pain.. they said that the damage was worse than they thought (cavity growing under the old filling) and there is still a possibility of a root canal.
The fuckers sent me to the pharmacy where i receivd 800mg of ibuprofin.
USELESS
I WANT THE GOOD DRUGS.   glad i had a few vicodin from when i fucked up my knee last year... just took one. hope it helps.. because i can barely open my mouth.
total cost for this round of dental work:  at least 2500.00
FUCKED.
At least today it no longer feels like someone is stabbing me in the eyeball. I can deal with the dull pain/inability to eat real food.

The funniest part of my previous post is finding this one and thinking 'THIS IS THE SAME FUCKING TOOTH!'

That's what i get for chewing ice/eating cornnuts/chewing a ton of gun/grinding my teeth.
