Non-Music Shit / Re: Strange food

*Durian-  asian melon-like fruit that smells like farts and tastes like onions (yum!)
*fois gras

I just read an article about food in Singapore and they mention that it's illegal to carry a Durian on public transport.  That must be some noxious melon.

Foie gras may be ethically pretty screwed, but that stuff tastes so goddamn good!

Weirdest thing I ever ate was fried sheep testicles on a skewer.  They were on the menu at an Uzbeki cafe in Brighton Beach and I went for it, like a real hero.

They should be en route to New York right now.  I live closer to the plant and got a box of Hubble Bubble yesterday because I worked with Mike on those.

So it'll probably be a few more days till they arrive in NY and then another week to package and get them all out the door.  Faking sounds awesome by the way.  I guess there's some haters out there, but that album rules.

King Louie and the Loose Diamonds - Memphis Teet (Sounds like something from the Memphis good 'ole days of Alex Chilton, Jim Dickinson, Terry Manning, Moloch, and Don Nix. Good stuff)

I've been listening to the Loose Diamonds album a hell of a lot too.  It's so damn good.  Gypsy Switch is a classic.

Also been listening to ...

Television Personalities (And Don't the Kids Just Love It)
Roky Erickson (Evil One, All That May Do Rhyme, Never Say Goodbye_
Hubble Bubble (Faking LP)
Milk'n'Cookies
Incredible String Band
100% Dynamite  (great Studio One comp)

Music Shit / Re: Chrome LP reissues on Noiseville

Yeah, I should have mentioned that.  The packaging is way chintzy.  The sound is good though.  There's a Cleopatra Records insert ad for Chrome and Guru Guru t-shirts with it.  I guess either they're responsible for it or that's meant to throw people off.

I just picked up a bootleg reissue of Half Machine Lip Moves on blue vinyl at Amoeba.  It's limited to 300 and priced at 20 bucks.  Don't know, maybe it's common knowledge that they're floating around but it was the first I'd seen of it.  They had a bunch of 'em there.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Movies I've been watching
« on: August 28, 2007, 01:12:20 PM »
Mix-Up sounds cool.  I love the Up series.  I just heard of a movie last night that's s'posed to be similar called Following Sean.  They interviewed this kid in the 60s who's parents were dirty hippies and feeding him pot at age 6 and now they catch up with him in the present day.

I've been watching lots of movies lately.  Some mini-reviews for ya cause I don't wanna do my work ...

Superbad - I loved it.  Laughed out loud a few times in the theater ... I don't do that too much.

Le Doulos - A 1962 Melville crime noir film.  Great!  Very slow & moody with lots of plot twists to keep you guessing.

King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - One of the most entertaining documentaries I've ever seen.  Whoever edited this thing did an amazing job.  High drama and completely hilarious.  The characters in this thing are unbelievable.  So good.

The Passenger - Classic Antonioni with Jack Nicholson giving an understated performance.  It's real slow and put me to sleep twice before I finally got to the end.  But the last scene is one of the coolest long tracking shots I've ever seen.  It's a beautiful movie.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders - Psychedelic dark Czech erotic coming of age fairy tale film from 1970.  If that sounds good to you, check it out.  Good weird children's choral music and really nice to look at.  The part I watched late at night stoned was great.  Not stoned = kinda boring.

Maltese Falcon - Hadn't seen it in years and just read the book, so I was curious to watch it again.  Hell yeah!  I love this movie.  Only wish they had Lauren Bacall playing the femme fatale instead of whats-her-face, that wooden cunt.

Going this week to see Metropolis at the old Castro theater.  Pretty stoked for that one!

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: billy childish shows
« on: August 24, 2007, 01:53:16 PM »
On September 5th, Needles and Pens in San Francisco is having an opening reception for a showing of Billy's woodcuts.

A few weeks ago, I'd seen a listing for him doing a performance at the Hemlock, but I just checked and I don't see it on their calendar anymore.  His fansite, theebillychildish.com, hasn't been updated in a year.  I don't see any listings on his own site either.

I just stumbled on this SF burger thread from a culinary forum.  Maybe it'll help inspire another trip?

It's inspiring me to go get a burger at Original Joe's after work today!

Best pizza in New York -- I'd say Totonno's for sure. Totonno's is in Coney Island on Neptune Ave and totally worth the trip. Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn bridge and John's Pizza in the West Village (also uptown) are both great and almost as good.

Dani's totally right about this.  John's is on Bleecker Street and I think it's better then Grimaldi's.  I'd also add Patsy's to the list.  I've never actually eaten there, but the original location is up in East Harlem and lots of people swear by it.  The Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge branched off from Patsy's.

All of those places are sit-down restaurants.  If you're just looking to grab a couple slices, I always recommend Muzzerella's on Avenue A btw 11th 12th.   Everyone I've taken there has been pretty stoked on it.

Everybody's got their own favorite though.  It's best to ask around because, even though there's a pizza place on every other block, a lot of them are crap.

Check out the NY pizza map at this site, it'll probably help.

Non-Music Shit / Re: The Big Question

Working in book publishing's not a bad gig.  It really all depends on who your boss is I suppose.  I've been lucky, had a cool boss for 8 years and it's allowed me to live comfortably.  From what I understand, book publishing is more laid back then a lot of other industries.  Magazine publishing, not so much.  The main publishers in the States are in New York and San Francisco.   The more years you put in, the easier it gets.

My friends took me to a California style pizza joint called Pauline's Pizza the other day.  It's in the mission.  I was wary.  But we got their 'signature' pesto pie and it won me the fuck over.  I don't know, maybe it shouldn't be called pizza, but it was good as hell.  Good crust and a layer of mozzerella slathered over with pesto.  Can't really compete with the best of NJ/NY slices or John's/Grimaldi's/Paty's, etc. but man, I was happily surprised.

Still kicking myself that I skipped S.I.D.S. to go see a Simply Saucer reunion gig.

Simply Saucer was no good, huh?  Bummer.

Terrible Twos didn't do much for me either.  I thought they were alright at first but I got bored pretty quickly.  I think the Pirhanas did the same thing but better.

Not a touring band, but the Rantouls have been one of my favorite live bands lately.
