Cities / Nicaragua
« on: July 29, 2013, 01:08:01 PM »
Gonna be traveling around Nicaragua for two weeks in mid-August.  I've been kind of slack about planning this trip and just started figuring out an itinerary.  I'll likely be going to Managua, Granada, Ometepe Island, San Juan del Sur, and probably somewhere up north, maybe Leon.  Has anybody done a similar trip and have any advice/recommendations?  Any cool places to stay or anywhere that should be avoided?

Non-Music Shit / Re: applying to grad school

Thanks to everyone who weighed in.  I'm going to apply for an assistantship and try volunteering at the main branch of the library here just to get some working experience in the field.  D.A.M. does sound like the way to go.  I was working in book publishing the past thirteen years and that industry is dying a quick death.  I'd rather not have to embrace the digital world but it'd suck to go back to school and finish with an obsolete degree.

Non-Music Shit / applying to grad school

I got laid off from my job last summer and the unemployment dollars are drawing to a close soon.  Not so keen on going back to what I was doing for work before so I'm looking into applying for a master's in Library Science at UT Austin.  There's been a couple of  threads on here before discussing the degree and a few regular posters were either applying or starting the program a few years ago.

So I've just got a couple questions.  Is the degree worth the debt?  And when applying, how important are those academic references?  I finished my undergrad degree in 1997 and haven't taken any courses since then.  Never developed any real relationships with my professors back then so I don't know how I'd get any strong references.  Could I substitute with professional references from my past thirteen years of work?

TB might not be the best place for asking this, but any advice is appreciated.  I seriously need to figure some shit out.  Wooo.

;D you've got me lol'ing over here.  ;D

Obviously, my statement is ridiculous. I was trying to be diplomatic in my opening statement. I was more like 50% impressed by this.

I was expecting to like it a lot mainly because Magnolia did it. They've done lots of great documentaries. If anyone should have been able to craft a real story and present it, they certainly had the practice under their belts.

Magnolia tends to put out really good movies but they actually don't have anything to do with the productions.  They're just a distributor who picks up already completed independently made movies.

It's on Comcast for $6 or something.
Liked it plenty.  Any fan would.
Really wanting see "Stranded In Canton".  Looks like a party.

The 'Stranded in Canton' book/dvd that came out a few years ago is a nice little package. You can still get it for around 30 bucks.

Besides Pablo Picasso which he does pretty often, I've seen him play Old World a couple of times.  It's like this ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTCgjbLmgJY

Non-Music Shit / Re: Richard Ramirez, The Night Stalker: Dead.
« on: June 08, 2013, 09:37:26 AM »
About six years ago, I was getting a haircut in San Francisco and got into a conversation with the barber about Ramirez.  I mentioned that I'd recently found a dead body on the street and that set him off on his story.  He told me that when he was in high school, he gave a friend a ride home after school.  Right after the kid walked into his house he came running back out yelling his head off.  So the future-barber pulls over, follows his friend back into the house and finds the kid's sister laying on the floor with her throat slit and her head practically torn off.  They hear a back-door screen shut and someone run off through the back yard.  He tells me that they later found out it was Ramirez who did the killing and apparently he was still in the house when they got there.

The guy could've been bullshitting me, but when he told me the story he got pretty stirred up and seemed genuinely freaked out.

I saw them play a few times in the 90s (Antenna Club in Memphis in 94, Maxwells in Hoboken in 95, and Empty Bottle in Chicago in 97 I think).  And I've caught a couple of the reunion shows (Bottom of the Hill in SF and the one in Columbus).  The Memphis show stands out because it was the first time I'd heard them and they blew me away.  They were also playing to a big enthusiastic local crowd so the energy was awesome.

The two reunion shows were better then the other two shows I saw in the 90s.  They're the type of band that's propelled by the energy in the crowd and there was a ton of excited fans at those reunion gigs.  It didn't feel diminished by time or age to me at all.

And, Whet, I was at that Headcoats show at the Cooler too.  I remember Edgar passing out on the stage while Billy stepped around him.  Being into garage-punk in NY in the 90s was kinda weird.  I was always one of the youngest people at garage shows and I was in my 20s.  The Makers played at the Continental on the 'Fuck You' album tour and there were only like 20 people there.  Maybe that was typical of the whole east coast at the time.

The Total Punk house party was the most fun I had all week.  The Sleaze were so good that night along with all the other bands.

Cheater Slicks and Monoshock on a bill together is pretty sick.  I might need to fly up for this one.

I'll sell you my 'Go Where the Action Is' for $5 + shipping if you don't wanna buy a new one.  It's got a promo clipped corner.  The vinyl's in good shape.

I was at the show last night too.  I didn't really pick up on the white boy rapper thing but I get what you mean by funky dad.  I've never seen them before but figured it was part of the character he was playing.

The whole thing was a lot darker then I expected.  I've hardly heard anything by them, just Meet the Residents.  The singer basically played an old guy having a nervous breakdown.  I was put off at first but it drew me in as it went along.  Definitely not the type of thing I'd wanna listen to at home but it was cool to see.  I didn't get why they had a whole Christmas theme going on a tour that started at the end of January.

It's not that difficult.  In my experience though, you can only do it once.  In my last apartment I had an Expedit that I'd reassembled twice and it was leaning pretty hard.  Just got done assembling a new one I bought at Ikea today.  Ugh.
