I'm headed to NZ in late November for three weeks. Can anyone suggest record stores worth checking out? I'll be moving all over both islands and hope to spend most of my time outside but still want to shop a bit. I've looked through the other NZ threads about bands and didn't see anything about stores.
Thanks.

Auckland-wise the pickings are pretty slim, Real Groovy is the largest and has the most second hand records (especially NZ stuff) but there's a reason it's been referred to here as real greedy... The High Seas http://www.thehighseas.co.nz/ carries a few termbo related bands but it's not really the main focus of the store. Conch (www.conch.co.nz) carry more soul, funk, reggae etc kind of stuff if you're interested but its mostly reissues.

Wellington has Slowboat on Cuba st. which always has some good stuff along with another real groovy just up the road.

Thats about all I know of, would be interested if anyone else knows any good spots though.

just saw on Pumice's myspace thing that there's a Pink Reason gig with him on the 17th of Sept at Whammy bar in Auckland, any truth to the rumor? Stoked if so, not nearly enough good music going on here at the moment..

Thanks for the recommendations all,  definitely the best part of an otherwise fairly dry project.

Farenheit 451, Quiet Earth and Sleeping Dogs, all really really enjoyable.

Doing a research project on different ideas of utopias and dystopias, can anyone recommend any other films that deal with this type of thing? Seen some of the more obvious stuff like 1984, but judging by this thread seems like some of you dudes know waay more about obscure films than I do.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Odd Squad yet, Devin the Dude's first group. Dated, but 'Fa Sho' and 'Your Pussy's Like Dope' are timeless, at least in my eyes (ears?).

Those who love the golden age stuff should really know about Schooly D too.

surf city are great, check out mean street too

www.myspace.com/meanstreetfighter

emily from mean street is in the wilberforces (or was, i can't tell anymore) who i like wayyyy more.

far, forgot about the coolies too, though i dunno if they're still making music. would love to see them play again.

I'm pretty sure the coolies are long gone. Stefan (who is pumice) was their drummer for a bit. one of them has a new band which i can't remember the name of played their second show with Die! Die! Die! a couple of months back.

I've only seen wilberforces once and didn't think much of them at the time, will definitely give them another listen now though. Maybe it's just that I've seen mean street play a lot more (they were playing about once a week at whammy before I left the country).

Stink about the coolies though, they were great. Good that some of them are still active in some way. Does pumice ever play live in NZ?

fvckin choice. sux jonahs another one of those stink Niew Zllnd cunts though eh. must be bloody hard to pull off a good Aus/Samoan accent like that. His dad is a bit of a staunch cunt too.

Jonah sounds really South African to me rather than anyone from Samoa I've ever met, but then I've never met an Islander from Aus so what do I know? Great show though, caught the last few eps on tv in the UK and got hooked.
