Recorded live at Death by Audio NYC, October 2nd, 2009, on occasion of the You Are Here ?Maze? festival, curated/created by Trouble (Laura Paris and Sam Hillmer (Zs)). Within the ad-hoc labyrinth, Excepter performed obscured to the audience and alienated from each other, starting early and playing late. Shares title with a Philip K. Dick novel in which an isolated group of space colonists consider the absolute as their mutual hallucination crumbles around them. cd - $13 / lp - $12
The name Grass Widow is a coupling of words, which when combined, provide a basis for multiple meanings. Bassist/vocalist, Hannah Lew, drummer/vocalist, Lillian Maring and guitarist/vocalist, Raven Mahon chose the name for their San Francisco-based three-piece as a way to represent the approach they take to writing music. The phrase is rooted in 17th century literature; commonly referring to a woman whose husband is away at sea, but the visual associations of each word also provides an opportunity to interpret meaning on multiple levels. "For me" says Maring, "it's about a state of solitude when you realize parts of you may be missing." Lew adds: "The name Grass Widow refers to elements of the unknown or the subconscious, things not in plain sight."
Grass Widow approaches lyrical content in much the same way, using metaphor to express complicated, intimate themes. Inspired by the personal, they use myth and allegory to synthesize ideas and create new landscapes wherein listeners can draw their own meaning.
"We write lyrics about very personal and often dark subjects, but present the ideas in a way that disguises the content within metaphor and upbeat instrumentation," says Mahon. ?Although we chose the name early on, it has evolved with us as our process has become refined.? Grass Widow formed in 2007 and quickly received attention within the Bay Area as well as national underground press via publications like Yeti. Influenced by similarly all-female punk and post-punk acts like The Neo Boys and Kleenex, they also note Roy Wood's The Move and The Kinks as a major source of inspiration, which can be heard in their three-part harmonies, complex arrangements and odd chord progressions.
In 2009, Grass Widow released their first S/T LP on local indie imprint Make-A-Mess Records as well as a 12" EP on Brooklyn label Captured Tracks.

One of the most unique punk bands of our time hailed from Zurich, Switzerland. From 1978-80 Kleenex gigged around, recorded 2 7"'s and toured the UK with such acts as Gang Of Four, Subway Sect, The Swell Maps and The Raincoats.
In 1980, the group changed their name to Liliput (due to pressures from the Kleenex tissue company) and continued under that moniker until their demise in 1983. As Liliput, 3 more 7"'s and 2 LP were released as the band evolved through numerous personnel changes. Finally the entire contents of the ever-popular Kill Rock Stars double CD is now available as a 4 LP set. Housed in a sturdy tip-on sleeve slipcase and includes a full color 12 page booklet.

Featuring drums, percussion, keyboards, vocals, and a baritone guitar these ladies play songs that can turn a large ballroom into a sweaty basement dance party.

Keep an eye out for them as this is only the beginning.

This 7" features two brand new songs, an embossed sleeve, colorful insert, and is a limited edition.

will ship before the Sept. 1st release date and come w/ free button (not the garfield variant that is floating around portland but a different one!)
