Non-Music Shit / hand poured vinyl?
« on: March 26, 2019, 07:27:36 AM »
Is hand poured vinyl really a selling point? It just sounds douchie to me, like hand poured coffee or something. I've been noticing a few smaller labels using the phrase. Is the sound quality better? edgumacate me!

Music Shit / Re: Bowie Dead
« on: January 11, 2016, 09:52:50 PM »
After waking and checking the news, my first reflex was irritation, as I knew I'd be fielding a number of calls at work today asking for Bowie LPs.  Thought about answering every phone call with "We don't have any Bowie records."  I didn't.

His kick's pretty shocking, really, though I'm ambivalent about him.  I agree with Meltzer's assertions that he was one of the harbingers of rockdeath, but it's easy to revise rock's history when when you're less than half the age of the genre and have only a fourth- or fifth-hand idea of its genesis.  And also if you have the Internet.

I feel the same way about Bowie as I do Herman's Hermits and 1910 Fruitgum Co.: they all wrote good, memorable pop songs.  They all had style.  They all had a good sense of presentation and aesthetic.  They all were content thieves and costume burglars, had pretty good managers.  And they were all full of shit, and they all knew it, and they all had a subtle sense of humor about it.

A lot of Bowie's fans don't, didn't -- never did.  Not about him.  I always found that odd.

DJ'd a night in celebration of his birthday at this bar in Chicago once.  Must've been 2005.  It was with my bandmate.  The birthday night was a yearly event at the bar, and the regular guy had backed out at the last minute.  We were asked in desperation.  We accepted out of boredom and want of free drinks.  As we gathered together our records, we simultaneously realized that we didn't really care much about Bowie and owned little of his output.  I brought a beat copy of Ziggy, Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane and, ignorantly, a number of glam and flamboyant punk records indebted to the man himself, a few containing Bowie covers.  We were sufficiently bagged before we even started playing records, and an hour into our night, the crowd that assembled became very, very angry about our lack of David Bowie: shouts, screams, a guy in a hooded sweatshirt tried to reach over the bar and grab me, and the apex of the night was my partner, Mr. Sing Sing Records, finding the microphone behind the booth and assuring the chagrined crowd that "David Bowie shops at Wal-Mart."  He also told everyone to "get the fuck out" at last call.  But there weren't many people left at that point.  Laughed until I nearly pissed my pants during the cab ride home.  Don't believe I was asked to DJ again at this establishment.

The preponderance of t-shirts and iconography throughout the years always got my goat.  And "genius."  I don't like that word.

Low is a very good record.  Actually, he had an incredible run of very good records.  Many of them are very good due to the input and influence of others.  His influence on rock's evolution is overstated and not worth mentioning.  None of this is.

The last holdout for me is Aladdin Sane.  I still listen to it, though with some irregularity.  Mostly for "Panic in Detroit."  A very good song.

RIP.

ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS

guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The official release date was 9/18 - got my limited edition in the mail that day - though a local store already had it a week before.

There's HOPE! Guess I just have bad luck.. or SB hates me.

They haven't replied to my email yet.

I LOVE SB, I just hate that that it takes them so long to ship orders. this has literally happened w/ every pre order I've ever placed w/ SB.  I was just hoping they'd get their shit together by now.
I do a ton of mail ordering & pre ordering & almost every label ships orders to arrive before or few days after the release date.

sorry,  I have to vent....

FUCK SACRED BONES MAIL ORDER!

pre ordered the d-unit special edition on 7/24 & my order still hasn't shipped!  SB you had over 6 weeks to pack orders! I understand that there are delays, but every pre order I've EVER done was shipped 1 to 3 weeks after the release date. Now, I don't expect to get my records before the release date but with in a few days of the release date would be cool.
Anybody else have similar experience w/ SB?

Post your favorite Vivian Girls and related memories here, like when Frankie Rose went boy-crazy and Cassie Ramone farted and it was cute.

farting is never cute...neither is Cassie, Katie is the cute one.

Music Shit / Pitchfork Shake Appeal
« on: November 12, 2013, 11:24:45 AM »
I've actually been enjoying Pitchfork's new Shake Appeal column. In the review of Star Spangled Bananas - Pebbles 2000 LP the reviewer writes about the track Sex Bomb, but doesn't mention that it's a Flipper cover.  Maybe he's super young?

young steve I love your post/reply!  I find some of them really annoying, but that was pure gold!
I have a disclaimer on my discogs saying it could take me up to 7 days to ship an order depending on my work schedule.  I have 2 part time jobs. Quite often it takes me more than 7 days to ship out an order, specially when it's a $3.00 7".  It's pretty amazing I haven't receieved negative feedback....yet.
Anybody else notice an increase in "lost" packages from buyers w/ no or very little feedback?

You can not imagine the hell that daily life is in California/sacramento. they're taking away my liberty by making me pay taxes. home invading illegals are taking over my freedom of Home Depot parking lots.
