Music Shit / Re: Mouthus
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:39:11 PM »
I was going to start a new Mouthus topic, but thought I'd just resurrect this one as there was some good discussion already going on!

One thing I never understood is how neglected they were. That first single aint that far off from 1-2-3-4. In someways it is closer to the Sick Things than any no wave bullshit. But the punk crowd never seemed to dig them. I tried to pass the first stuff off to people as extreme garage punk but none of that crowd would have it. Dills.

The last time I saw Sightings was in Philadelphia whilst on holiday a couple of years ago and they were supported by Clockcleaner. The place was pretty busy, but after Clockcleaner played, everyone left and Sightings played to literally 8 people. Completely ridiculous considering Sightings played one of the best sets I saw that whole year that night. The whole band is so unbelievable and like nothing else - John and Richard make a rhythm section which can only come from years of playing, and common mutual ideas about music which they wouldn't find with anyone else. Without wanting to resort to shitty faux psychic terminology, It's almost as if they're telepathically linked(!) Ha! Mark Morgan's guitar playing is unreal too. Sightings are a one off group, and their records will totally stand the test of time.

I see what you're saying in that the garage/punk scene has taken its sweet time catching up to Sightings (doesn't really surprise me, frankly); but they're pretty well recognized in other circles, and always have been.

True. Although when the "garage punkers" caught up with Sightings, they had already moved on. I think people will catch up to "Through the Panama" in the next couple of years - god knows why, it's not like it's that hard a record to get into.

I can see why people started talking about Sightings in this thread as the two bands inhabit the same kind of realm. But to get back onto Mouthus - they pretty much sound NOTHING like their contemporaries, and I think they are given a huge disservice to when people write them off as a "drone / noise" band. In my mind, they have not only made some of the best and most genuinely "psychedelic" rock records of recent years, but also the most unique regardless of any genre. This gushing comes as a result of listening to "Saw a Halo" tonight, which along with "Slow Globes", has to be their finest moment. I hope I can still get a copy of the No Fun 2x12"...do not underestimate this band.

There is a new Mouthus lp on Ecstatic Peace that has just come out too.

Spider and the Flies sound great, where are they from?

Features two of The Horrors, so Southend/London.

Haha, seriously?? Wow...turn up for the books!

Well they've all got really good taste. They always play great stuff when they dj and their comps/mixes are always full of total gems.

I'm sure, but then we all have access to mutant sounds.

There's some cool noise music coming out of england. The whole Glasgow thing. I really like astral social club and sunroof!

http://www.myspace.com/astral_social_club

2 things. 1. Astral Social Club and Sunroof! are based in Yorkshire. 2. Glasgow is in Scotland.

Spider and the Flies sound great, where are they from? There's a great new minimal synth styled duo from London called Information Theory. No myspace, but a friend of mine passed on to me a demo cassette the other week and it's a bit like Absolute Body Control filtered through power electronics / early industrial, really good. It's pretty lo-fi and instrumental, but apparently they're adding vocals soon.

Best UK band I've seen recently have been Methodist Centre. Three piece oi! / streetpunk inspired group who write songs about homosexuality, but the unorthadox musical line up (guitar, two drummers) gives it almost a glam edge live - really excellent live band. I hope they can transfer the power and energy / rawness of their live shows on record at some point. http://www.myspace.com/methodistcentre. They're part of the Invisible Spies label, who released the excellent "LSD, Who Said That?" single by Chips For the Poor a couple of years ago.

Don't know how "Term-bo" friendly they are, but Cleckhuddersfax are probably my favourite band in London at the moment. They seem to have shaken off their "prog" shackles and are moving into more synth punk and glam inspired territory. Their CD was just released recently, and there is a 7" on its way soon on a new London label that my friend is starting up. Keeby also plays in PLEASE, who are also shit hot.

Yes Way is going to be a great chance to see a lot of bands I have heard about but haven't seen yet, I still need to get tickets for it.

girl talk makes my blood boil. i've got friends that play that shit and i can't stand it.

my thoughts exactly.  girl talk is the worst.

I'd not heard of Girl Talk before, but I went to see Fabulous Diamonds and Cleckhuddersfax open for them tonight in London. If I was from the same city as that cunt I'd probably move. The gig was full of obnoxious American exchange students too - wall to wall mall slags, and jocks.

The Coyote Men are a fucking great live band, so much so that I can tolerate their faux yank accents. A shame if this is their final performance!
