Music Shit / Re: Roky Erickson w/ Okkervil River
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:50:48 AM »
For a while there where rumors that Roky was working on an album with ZZ Top.  That makes a lot more sense to me.  I haven't heard much off of this Okkervil River collaboration, but it's just a stupid idea from the get go and I'm sure it wasn't a decision that he made.  That Black Angels band backed him up  on a couple of shows a few years ago.  At least they have a shred of psychedelia in there music.  Ok River is b-grade bright eyes shit.  Total bummer.

Music Shit / Re: Clevo people how was Death at the Beachland????
« on: September 28, 2009, 07:11:17 PM »
Uh... It wasn't great.  The singer's voice was shot and the singer from the opening band (sons of members of Death) had to sing basically all the Death songs they played.  That actually wasn't so bad.  The kid could sing well enough, but not as good as the old man did on the record.  The real problem was that the filler songs they played to pad out the set were really atrocious raggae, ska jams.  When they played the songs off of For the Whole World to See it was alright.  They still had some power and it was cool to hear them live.  They probably should have just come out and done the record start to finish and leave it at that.  It would have been a decent 1/2 hour set.  But the other stuff they played was unmemorable and accounted for more than half of the set.  People were walking out.  I know they sold out Chicago and Detroit, but by the end of the Cleveland set there were about 35 people left.
I didn't go in with any high expectations.  It's been almost 35 years since those songs.  These dudes probably never expected anyone was gonna give a shit about those songs they recorded three decades ago.  It was clear by the newer songs they were playing that they are a million miles away from that stuff now.  But they have an opportunity to make some $ playing music now.  Can't fault them for that.  I still think they record is great, but I wouldn't bother to see them live again.

Rock a Fire Explosion is definitely worth seeing.  It played in my town a few months back.  It's actually about several different people that are grown up but still obsessed with these animatronic pizza palace characters.  But, yeah the one guy who bought the entire band and houses it in his garage is amazing.  There are videos on youtube of the modern songs he programmed the band to do.  I imagine this has to take a very long time to do.  Here's a video of them doing a shitty arcade fire song.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4aIblRt72g

New Dutchess and the Duke.  I like it, but there's 10 songs and two of them are re-recordings of the Hozac single.  This one also seems like more of a downer than the first.

Anyone else hear this yet?

uh...who's grizzly bear?

just a sub an. collective indie folk band that is getting hyped all over the place. i just got an e-mail press release mentioning that they have just sold over 100,000 copies of their new release, which i guess is the point where people like Jay-Z and Mr. McDonald become aware of this hot new trend called indie rock.

Michael McDonald disses punk, Jay Z talks like he invented underground music.  Sorry if this belongs in "pop punk."

Jay-Z praises Grizzly Bear

"Grizzly Bear is an incredible band. The thing I want to say to everyone-- I hope this happens because it will push rap, it will push hip-hop to go even further-- what the indie rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring. It felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, they're not on the radio, no one hears about them, and there's 12,000 people in attendance. And the music that they're making and the connection they're making to people is really inspiring."

Michael McDonald talks about his collaboration with Grizzly Bear

"I was really impressed with the show. Their songs were alluring and interesting. So when they mentioned to me about doing this, I said absolutely...When I was with the Doobies, the style of music was that we all went over the falls with chord progressions, trying to make things as complex and interconnected as possible. The punk movement swung towards being as primitive as possible, but now it's back to where these guys are good musicians. I never thought that would come back around, but it has."

What the hell?  Deadly Snakes?  Is this a one off thing?  That's an amazing lineup, but seems like it'd be pretty annoying trying to figure out who you wanna see at any given time.  No matter what time it is, you're gonna miss at least one band you wanna see.

i casn't believe tilt got mentioned. I take it back about the Chubbies. Tilt was  THE WORST. Maybe just for someone adding them to the list we should make a goddamn 'worst vibrato in vocals' thread.

Hey man I said it was a guilty pleasure.  Don't have to rub it in.

Supersnazz's last LP "Diode City" is real good.  half the songs where written by Fink from Teengenerate if memory serves.  The last Red Aunts LP, "Ghetto Blaster" is my favorite by them by far.  The Muffs?  Headcoatees stuff is cool, but yeah, that is most def not a pic of them.  Also thought Huggy Bear was the best of the "riot girl" bands.  And although, this would probably qualify as a guilty pleasure, Tilt had some decent songs.

New Reigning Sound, Box Elders, Pissed Jeans, Bare Wires.  All great!  New Mission of Burma 7". . . kinda boring.

I always liked From the Velvets to the Voidoids, but I recently heard that a lot of people are quoted in that book as saying things they never said/aren't true.

Maybe the only book I've read that truly gives Cleveland it's due, though.

"Get In The Van" ONLY if it's an Audio book.. cuz it's even funnier!

I wish Rollins would have hire Morgan Freeman to do the audio book version of Get in the Van.  He's the only one who could give the subject matter the sense of gravitas it really needs.
