Music Shit / Wipers 7 inches on Zeno
« on: March 13, 2009, 09:41:41 AM »
I came across the "Romeo" and "Better Off Dead" records.    I noticed that the sleeve says "sleeve re-issued by zeno records"  On the 1995-tastic zeno website, these are selling for $30 a pop.  So are these the original records and they just had to repress the sleeves.  Seems so.  Anyone know for sure what the story is?

Anyway, American Splendor (is it a documentary? I dunno, it features the real Harvey Pekar so maybe? all over the place, that one) and The Corporation (some may disagree) are also great.

Agreed.  I actually had the pleasure of buying some records from Mr Pekar, or rather his wife.  He did come out to grunt at me, however.

"Trials of Henry Kissinger" is another good one if you want to feel even shittier about being an American.

Well, i never said the list was comprehensive.  damn.  "Fog of War" is great.  I hear good things about "Standard Operating Procedure" as well.  Need to Netflix that one.

well i'm sure they also lost a bit of money pressing a ton of that 5rc stuff and taking on lovepump and all those atavastic reissues... was the world ready for 800 promo copies of the zach hill/mick barr album?  do people really buy all those rollins spoken word albums that they manufactured?  i get the impression that they were getting out before things got worse, which i can understand...

that's true, but i always just assumed they kept the numbers low on most of that stuff and were realistic about it's commercial potential.  they also never released any atavistic stuff on vinyl and very rarely did 5rc on vinyl.  i mean every distributor must be sitting on piles of records that don't sell.
but you're right nobody buys thos rollins spoken word albums.

One of the greatest American indie labels ever.  Yeah, they released some crap in the last few years, but they were a really consistent label even after they outgrew hardcore.  That Crystal Antlers ep that came out last year was pretty decent too.
Anyway, really makes you wonder what's gonna happen with indie distribution.  If they couldn't make a profit distributing the Arcade Fires, Minus the Bears and M. Wards of the world, then what can you do.

Music Shit / Re: 'Share How Mark Gormley Has Blown Your Mind'
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:53:32 AM »
Seriously, does anyone know what the hell is going on with Mark Gormley/The Uncharted Zone.  I pride myself on being able to tell when something is satire or not.  I just can't decide with this shit.  I mean, either way the Gormley stuff is legendary.  "Gray Days" is the one that does it for me.
But the videos are so perfectly bad that it just seems too calculated.  I wanna believe that it's not, but i don't know.  That Phil Thomas Katt dude is quite the wizard in the studio.  He's like the Phil Spector of the greater Pensacola, FL region.

Dawn of the Dead LP isn't as great in my opinion.   Suspiria and Profundo Rosso are very nice though.  The first 2 volumes of the "best of" cds are killer as well.
