In conclusion...they're huge for a contemporary band positively discussed on this forum. Just *not* quite as big as Ty Segall. OK. Let's move on. Sorry I mentioned it. Decent band. Seem like nice folks. Good for them.

Listening to Rudimentary Peni's "Death Church" a lot lately. From the packaging to the sounds, about as perfectly-formed a punk rock album can get. Shivers all around. Cheers to the bass, the motherfuckin' bass.

Bad Times LP - about as perfectly-formed a punk rock album as could be expected at that late a date. "Streets of Iron" can match nearly any of the early-era OGs. Seems like a slam-dunk with that membership looking back now, but everyone knows how these sorta "all-star" projects usually end up.

Various radio rock LPs from the late 70s/early 80s. I usually grab any regional shit I can find, and most have at least one (or two, or three, and sometimes more) cool tune that would cost a good deal if issued as a 45...the only difference is that no one's reissued 'em (or often even put it up online). Here's a Rockford, IL band called XL7, I wonder if they ever put out any other material? There's also an excellent power pop song on the LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvo4bwpDj4A

They definitely have an "indie rock" push, which works well for them in some towns, including indie rock stalwart Milwaukee. Otherwise they'd be playing the same basements as the rest of the X-Records bands instead of packing a club and getting paid in 20s instead of sweaty singles.

Pretty sure they're headliners in most cities. And have a nice draw, as well. But whatever, not trying to derail, just felt like they already got a lot of press and backing, and better them than most...

Aren't they....kinda big? Like bigger than 99% of the new bands discussed here?

I like the first album, not because I think it's great, but primarily because I liked that they weren't following trends so much as hitting their own groove. Dynamics and tension were actually involved. A commendable band, just not a very exciting one (for me).

I believe he was a full-on pig, by the way. Still wish he wouldn't have taken a downturn right before I was gonna get to see him (and he died shortly after). I know he was supposedly "awful" for years, but I still wanted to hear for myself. The main condemnation seemed to be a "rap" he did about the proper way to cook a pig that "went on for like 10 minutes." Sounds awesome, in theory.

Nice work man, that's the review that got my to buy my first Bo LP (Beach Party)!

I was getting bored even though I was huffing enough weed for a farm family. For years. Too dang old for that shit. There were several fun nights/fun bands over the last 5 or so years, but they were mixed into a shit stew.

Never cared at all about drinking, but I'm going to make sure that I bug someone for weed (I quit) if I get stuck at another one.

Exercise is a good call, as well as some sort of deep relaxation method. I've never been able to meditate properly, but I find hiking or biking out in the woods kills both birds for me.

Playing music is fun as heck. It's shows that suck. I had way more fun before getting talked into playing all those shows years back (and since dropping 'em).

The answer: socks. Bundles and bundles of socks.

Who cares? I do remember buying my first Bo Diddley record based on a Forced Exposure review, so there's that. Are you Tim Sommer? Or are you just his jealous twin?

Just a troll. And a very unfunny one.

^ I was deep into NZ/Aussie shit throughout the 80s, since I wasn't enjoying much stateside musically for most of it....until the Gories and Supercharger and the like started popping up at the end of the decade. I read every issue of B-Side & The Garage & bits & pieces of others, along with reading about that stuff in Forced Exposure etc. I also pored through various catalogs, like Au-Go-Go's, and sometimes ordered via the distro descriptions. That's how I first heard Slub. Had heard "Toys Went Berserk" was bad via a few reviews, so I never touched that one.

You used to be able to find Nikki's solo records in every dollar bin. I picked up a few over the years and always dug 'em, even though most seemed to pan them. They all sorta sound the same, but when that sound's Nikki Sudden, who cares?

It's a very nice place to visit! If you want to get away from the summer crowds, try the tip - Newport State Park is a wilderness park that's huge and has like 12 miles of shoreline and almost no one there. Not far is Door Bluff Headlands, also quiet and cool but not great if you're afraid of heights I guess. And just down the road is Ellison Bay Bluff park. Everywhere else is guaranteed to have a good number of tourists, but Peninsula Park, Cave Point/Whitefish Dunes, and so on, are worth it. And grab soup in Ephraim from Paul/the Rhythm Chicken's place. Or the goats on the roof place (Al Johnson's) in Sister Bay.

Also, the Lakeside is inferior to the Bayside, though it's definitely quieter. Baileys and Jacksonport are the only real towns on the Lakeside, so you have to drive a lot more over there...though it only takes 10 minutes or so to cross the county, but that can be a pain in the dead of winter.

Bailey's Harbor in Door County in WI. My grandparents have a lake house up there. It's quiet, peaceful, and perfect. Me and my husband went up there for my Spring Break a few years ago. It was still cold and snowy and the town was practically deserted. We spent the whole time going to little townie bars and stuff. Although, oddly, the bowling alley in Sister Bay was packed both times we tried to go.

If I had a chance, I'd move there in a heartbeat. Lafayette (IN) is starting to wear me out.

I grew up in Door County - it's beautiful, but it sucks hard in the winter. Basically an island out in Lake Michigan, it gets tons of snow and the roads are nuts. No one lives there in winter, and nothing is open that time of year - tourist towns. Everyone gets shitty-drunk all winter. You want a town over 10,000 people? Drive to Green Bay (almost an hour away). You want bigger than 100,000? Milwaukee, 3+ hours away. It's really, really isolated. The summers are amazing, as the water modifies the temperatures. I didn't know what below zero felt like until I moved; likewise, 2 days over 85 constituted a heat wave.

It was nice growing up in the Midwest in a place with beaches and wineries and orchards and bluffs and forests and so on, but the turkeys (tourists) are jackass yuppies and it's impossible to break in as a "local" unless you've been there for decades. That said, I'm around the age where a lot of that doesn't sound bad...but it's not the best place for younger people used to having "stuff" around. And there are no year-round jobs. And land prices keep going up, pushing locals out of the picture, etc.

The "cracker" I remember had someone doing "Strutter" and...shit...orange cover I can picture. 3 bands. I'll go look and see at some point. I probably had found domestic sources for Aussie stuff by the time you took over, not sure though. For some reason, I threw away all the old AGG catalogs I'd saved some years back. I didn't mind the wait, nor the "read Garage, order Flying Nun, wait 5 months" similar NZ one. It's funny, I've since gotten to "know" David Laing over the years, but I never really thought to look back and see what signatures were on those and whether I can recognize 'em now...good times...
