senior tenured faculty in the english and philosophy departments where i went to school (U of Missouri, the flagship state school with a decent reputation and enrollment of around 30,000) made 75-85K.  i am talking about professors who had published widely and taught for 25+ years.  85K is very good money in a place with a low cost of living like a college town in missouri for sure though.  associate professors in the english and philosophy departments made like 40-50K.

i would imagine that even the middling U of Missouri would be considered a pretty plum job for an academic.  when there is an opening in the english department, they receive over 1,000 applications - from phD's hoping to move to central missouri and make like 45K.

peaking lights - "imaginary falcons" lp - this is great, even better than i thought it would be.  it is a nice blend of soft and fuzzy james ferraro-style oscillating drones and moany female artists like grouper or inca ore.  somehow though, the record is quite uplifting.  digging it.

social junk - "concussion summer" lp - hit and miss for me, but when it hits it is pretty great.  the record came with a fairly sweet patch as well.  i threw it in the trash, so i'm sure i'll see it on a midtown dweller's crust pants soon enough.

i hear ya, i'm just busting your balls.

i would say my reasoning is at the intersection of law being an interesting career, versatile, and offers decent job security. lord knows that it's hard to find those qualities in another job w/ an english BA.

yeah, i got a ba in english and a ba in philosophy.  not very marketable at all!  law is a good field to go into.

haha.  i'm just saying don't go to law school because you want to be able to afford cool shit.  do it because you think it'll be an interesting, rewarding career, etc.

so now because of that you can't afford things?

no, i can afford things.  i am still at the big law firm.  i am typing this from the laptop provided by the big law firm.  i bought a house and a pretty cool car and records with my big law firm salary.  and it still sucks.

law school sucked.

also, being a lawyer sucks.

fyi!

life sucks, too, but you may as well be able to afford things!

that's exactly what i thought, until i went to law school and then got a job at a big law firm.

I'm fairly confident that neither Black Dice nor Heavy Winged is any good, but I dunno that Hughes would agree.

speaking as a huge black dice fan, i will say that "repo" is probably the one.  it is very disappointing.

But Boss was terrible.

i think "body rot" is a pretty killer song though.

i really like some of the MM stuff.  i like the ones that are recorded live and just sound like GZHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

gun outfit - "dim light" - great songs, spacious production, 1988 indie rock vibe.

jack rose - "kensington blues" - wholesome, kick-ass blues/ragtime/raga guitar playing.  mesmerizing.

dead c - "sun-stabbed" EP - picked this reissue up and listen to it often.  droney but concise.

black dice - "repo" - it has its moments, but overall i find this to be disappointing.  it's more like the queasy junk-shop vibe of eric copeland's solo stuff than i would like.  there are a few classic BD moments scattered throughout, and i keep listening to it, so maybe it'll grow on me.  i just hope they get back to the long-form mind-melters.
