$10 million for 2/3 of a season that's why. And he only has to show up on game day, a true and unaplogetic merc.

Vizquel in today's Chron got one thing right, Bonds is gonna start tearing it up again. The pressure to pass Ruth was making him swing at everything. That shot he hit for #715, the replay looks like an ordinary liner over the 2nd baseman but it just kept rising. It reminded me of Jose Canseco's laserbeam grand slam in Game One of the 1988 series, that thing left the park in about a second and a half.

Hey Buccos, you must be enjoying Jason Bay's recent run. It's a shame there isn't another young slugger to protect him in the lineup, then the Pirates could break .500.

Now Sportcenter can treat Bonds will all the white hot scrutiny reserved for Palmiero, Sosa, Giambi, Sheffield and the rest.

Where the hell is Raffy Palmiero these days? Using some of the 90 mil he made in the majors to buy himself a manmade island near Quatar, maybe. He can trade stories across the backyard fence with Michael Jackson...

From Feb 28th:

Schmidt at 90% of 2004 must mean = contract year baby. He's 33, so this will be his last big 4-year contract payday. If he wants to get the $45-50 mil he wants, he better save his shoulder blowout for his next employer. Expect 18 wins unless the shoulder blowout arrives this year instead.

Schmidt another 7 shutout innings tonight, never underestimate the 'contract drive'...if he keeps his innings to around 220 this year the Giants just might float him his dough to keep him around for awhile.

I seriously doubt that Mesa will ever face Vizquel in a MLB game again, his manager knows he would lose him for at least ten days afterwards which is equivalent to putting him on the DL. So why pitch the Big Sensitive Baby vs. the Giants in any situation? He'll sit this series out.

The real question is after they are both retired, does Mesa hit Vizquel at an autograph signing at a card show in Phoenix in 2012?

Should be a good night for a game, the wind has been blowing all day so it should take a break around 7. If you catch #715, be prepared for the ugly rugby scrum, quickly stuff the ball into your mouth is my advice.

Things got a little intense in the beer & pot-fueled rocker baseball league I was in a few years back. We had one team full of hard ons who really wanted to win and three other teams that just wanted to play. My team had the far-and-away best overall player, probably could've played big-school college-level ball if he wanted, and we used him as a pitcher only once...to beat the Hard Ons. The guy could throw four pitches for strikes, it was crazy, and I caught him the whole game. My hand was in pain for three days. After that, WE became the team that everyone thought was too good and uptight. Catch 22. Never got into any fights but after we annihilated the league founder's team like 33-7, the whole league fell apart because it wasn't any 'fun' anymore. I miss throwing my 70 mph sidearm fastball tho, especially when the weather gets warm, but all the amateur leagues in SF cost too much money to get into, uniforms, real umpires, the works. After you play some fast baseball, turn some double plays, hit some opposite field liners, its tough to go back to doughball.

In the pitchers, looks like ya missed a spot. Try again with a tractor trailer.

I read where Honus Wagner holds the record for triples by a 41-year old, with fucking 17. Those were the days. Finley is built like the the T1000 from the second Terminator flick.

I'm Don Denkinger, the umpire who blew the call in the 1985 World Series that handed Game 6 to the Kansas City Royals, who went on the win the Series (you read that right, KC as World Champs). It's been a tuff coupla decades, but the Old Lady got sick of my hiding in the basement with my train set and I decided to 'cyber' venture out. I have lots more fun on here than that Korean vomit-eating site I used to hang around on, so thanks for having me.

Bold prediction from Feb 15th:

My not-so-surprising pick to challenge for the AL wild card is Detroit. A full season of Ordonez and another year of experience tacked on a young pitching staff...

I'm quitting this stupid office job and getting a table in Vegas at Caesar's sports book, I'll just sit there all day with a cigarillo in my mouth, making minute movements with my hands that produce thousands of dollars...

I think it's becoming more obvious every day, but that trade Sabean made to get one year of AJ Piershitheadski is looking like one of the biggest steals of the last 20 years. He gave the Twins a lights-out closer (Nathan) and two of the best young potential starters in the AL (Liriano, Bonser) to get Mr. Personality, meanwhile we pay Matt Morris $8mil/year for a 5.50 era.

Most dominating player was a very pre-steroids Barry Bonds in his first year with the Giants in 1993. That first half of the year was like Barry and Everybody else, PLUS he was still playing Gold Glove D and stealing bases like crazy. Close to the all star break he was hitting like .375 and leading the league in EVERYthing. 2001 ain't close, I mean, he hits 73 the same year Sosa hits 66...big deal. Whenever I saw the Giants in the 90s Barry was always the best player on the field no matter who they played.

Most dominating pitching I ever saw was Orel Hersheiser at the tail end of the 1988 season, when he threw something like 60 scoreless innings in a row. Nothing but weak grounders and strikeouts, for like all of Sept. Then he single-handedly whupped the A's in the World Series, awesome. Still a putz tho.

Lunny, Cain's era is gonna come plunging down lower than your standards on a warm Castro Saturday night.

Like Scott said, the Market Will Clear, in biz-school speak. To back up his ebay-price deflation story, I was talking at the same swap with a chick who used to do all the 7" pricing at the old Sf Reckless Records outlet, and she sez Jam 7" were a solid $15-20 a pop in the early 90s, which I can vouch for, I was leafing through them at the time and sighing. Now? You can snatch them up in lots of 3-5 for that same amount, why, 'cause they made 100,000+ of each of them, same with the Buzzcocks and later Damned and Clash etc. The supply was deliberately manipulated in the USA by collectors to keep prices high. Ebay destroyed that, which is why you can go to swaps now and pick up any random old punk 7" for nothing because the Fatsos can't tell the diff between a Buzzcocks that lost its value and a Killjoys that kept it, so it's all in the $2 New Wave box now...if you're lucky. In the early 90s, the Buzzcocks were $15 and the rarities were $2...or 50 cents.

With KBD stuff, the supply is nowhere near 100,000, for a legit rarity it may only come up for sale 2-3 times a year at "best", so even if the the market for it is only 25-50 folks, they are going to the mat for it every time and they all take turns winning depending on that week's cash flow situation. I don't think the market for powerpop in general will ever go back to the old days, some titles are gonna be high for as long as there is any competitive interest, but weaker titles will probably fade in price as downloaders gain access to burned samples esp on the UK stuff. It just took a long time for the punk fans to accept singing-songwriting chops on their records, but now that they have the hook in their mouths its never going back. Blame the Nerves.

For the recent garage punk stuff, I think many people honestly believe that we are in a really rich period the last five or so years for arty-primitive-catchy stuff, a resurgence on the 7" level definitely, and I think the prices are half legit, half hype. Some bands will stay highish based on increasing legendary rep (Oblivians, certain Registrators, early Turbonegro, King Louie discs, etc.) while others that are pure hype without songs will go the Amrep/Subpop route and end up back in the $1-4 range in five years. Velvet Monkeys anyone?

We now return you to Sorianocam.org, 24/7 eyeon-the-eyetie, to witness the elaborate flossing ritual with full reverse backflip...

Alou is in his last year, the Giants have been in an odd situation managers-wise. Baker and Alou are/were there to manage Bonds and the rest of the team as separate entities. Bonds is co-manager in effect. Once Bonds is gone, the Giants can hire an actual manager with permission to start pushing buttons, develop rookies, pressure players, the whole bit. So we don't even know what the looks like in SF since Roger Craig.

I don't see the point in keeping Alou around, especially if his son retires as well. Start over fresh. And go out and buy/trade for some bullpen help.

In the 'spot market', Black Lips are as hot as they will ever be. Intelligence have not peaked yet, I see them having bigger hit records down the road, they are the growers. Sit on their 7".
