Music Shit / Re: Gemm issues?
« on: May 04, 2006, 10:49:08 AM »
Free GEMM buying tutorial for newbies, based on dealing with the site since 1998:

1) When in doubt, ALWAYS ask if the 7" has a sleeve, alot of euros neglect to mention the missing sleeve and you end up overpaying w/o recourse. If the listing is explicit in giving separate ratings for sleeve/vinyl then you're okay.

2) Don't bother ordering from one stars, 99% of them don't keep any physical stock, they are merely listing distributors' new release information as their 'inventory', they have nothing. I don't know why GEMM keeps them around. 2 stars can be okay, I've got some real steals from 2 star sellers who don't know what they're doing. Just treat it like a gift from the gods if the order actually goes through.

3) Make sure that the record is an original pressing, that $200 record might be $13 for a reason. Some sellers skimp on the item info out of laziness.

4) Check that freight charge baby, there are some a-holes on GEMM who will charge you $10 to ship a 7" in the USA.

5) Check their seller contact info, they just might have a direct-order website and you might get the item cheaper w/o the GEMM surcharge by dealing direct (although you lose the GEMM protection).

6) Don't order from Italian sellers, just don't. Sorry SS. Domesticated Italians are okay.

7) Check for variations on the spelling of the artist or title, and think DUMB. I got the Desperate Biccycles (sic) Lp for $6 in this way. Also a lovely Homsexuals 7" for $3.

8) Don't expect records to stay up forever on there, even if they are $$. They will disappear from under your nose if you hesitate. Pondered that $50 Bad Posture Lp a little too long...

9) If there is anything flaky going on with the order, like pricing changes after the fact or it takes forever for the seller to respond, cancel the fucker and get GEMM to give you your money back. It's llke seller's regret. Check "Stoopid" feedback for examples. If GEMM is processing your order remember that the seller isn't the one charging your card, GEMM is. The seller never sees the card info...

10) Remember to Have Fun!!

Makes ya wonder how much the 1st press of 200 would go for.

Stay tuned for this Sunday, we'll all find out when I sell off approx 5 years of accumulated trade bait.

Yeah, even his name is kinda downsy-

"Braaaahd Innnnnnnngg! That's me!"

"You went to the opposite field with that double in the 6th, what kind of pitch was it?"

"Faaa-ahhhst!"

My initial prediction, upon which zero coin is riding, was that the Tigers would hold steady til August or so, maybe even spend a week or two in 1st place, at which point the Indians or the White Sox will sweep them in a home series and knock 'em out. Until then, part-ay. They have pitching and several hitters in the bloom of their prime, like Shelton and that guy at 3b, whatshisname...

Shane types with his thumbs, he likes email about as much as he digs on the Hellacopters.

If this comp comes out it'll be about frickin' time, I've been one of many kicking him in the ass for years. There's unreleased stuff too, 'natch.

Please, no one chime in with how the "Fingers are OK but I like the Boogerflingers better", no one cares what YOU think ya maroons.

Add to that above the elimination of two stupid things that managers do:

3) Endless throws over to first....borrrring. You get two per inning, after that it's counted as a ball to the batter, like a pitch out is.
4) Changing pitchers twice or three times in an inning. Unless they give up a run or get injured, they gotta stay in to finish the inning they started. No more endless warm ups and their associated commercial breaks.

For the record, I really like it when the pitcher hits a surprise double to win the game...its called baseball.

No, the Electric Eels 7" didn't come out til years later on Rough Trade. Who had a classic record out AND were awesome live...it's a neat trick.

The Stones were the best band in the world in 1969. And again in 1972. The Who were the best band in the world in 1966. The Beatles were the best band in the world from 1963-65. There was no single best band in 1967-68, there were too many contenders those years, but the Kinks are in the mix there with many others, the VU, Dutch Outsiders, etc. The Kinks are second to the Who in '66.

Here's a tough one, who's the best band on Earth in 1970? That's live PLUS a classic record that year. Sabbath maybe?

I love how the Giants hit Brian Giles of the Padres last night to 'protect' Barry Bonds after he was hit the previous inning. Thus putting a man on first with nobody out. And Wright unravelled after that, obviously distracted.

He could've plunked the guy in the 7th or something, with 2 out perhaps? It blew the game.

I see my Tigers prediction coming through, the early surprise team. They gots the pitching and Ordonez is having his last great year before age gets him.

Brewers are up and down but they will be up come August. Their pitchers just need to relax, and Weeks and Jenkins have their inevitable hot streaks when the weather warms up.

Told ya kids, the Pirates just don't have enough to compete yet. If they were to use their profit-sharing $$ to sign a big-name pitcher for next year, they could win 75 or so. They also need another legit bopper in the middle of the lineup, a 30-hr guy to take the heat off Bay. They could sign Alfonso Soriano for next year, play him wherever...if the Giants don't sign him to replace Barry.

The Olde Days, coming back into the USA pre-9/11 with two four foot high boxes of records and customs just waves me thru with a smile and a stamp.

The only customs that ever made me nervous was the UK, and that was because the Irish were 'frisky' the week before I came over which made my White Skin and tousled hair a detriment for once. Maybe that green bowler hat was a mistake too...

"Black Monk Time" by Shaw
"Rock & the Pop Narcotic" by Carducci
One of the Re/Search mag collections in book form.

Another confirmation of the usefulness of the Farren book. His Sci Fi stuff is entertaining too.

There is no *great* stand alone book on American hardcore that concentrates just on the prime years 80-85. Books tend to start out in the late 70s and bleed into early hardcore, usually either sneering at the 'jocks' who ruined the party or instead engaging in nigh-religious mythologizing.

I think it would take someone with early 80s cred who is still plugged in to write such a book, someone from the DC or NYC scene who didn't burn a million bridges.

Okay, which French girl did you stare at fractionally too long to get you into trouble with the Ol Lady? Did you make it out of De Gaulle?

Forgot learning French for France, learn some North African dialects.

I weren't romanticizing nuthin Lunny, just pointing out what once passed for civilized behavior in The Olde Game. I think Mesa should be suspended right now, just for being a touchy tard. To expand, I would send a MLB rep down to Denver, tell him he's suspended immediately and then tell him it'll be a month the next time he hits Vizquel. Get over it, you're all millionaires. I watched that 1997 World series and Vizquel was right, Mesa looked like 250 pounds of quivering suet on the mound. Renteria raked him.

I watched Bonds 'trot' around the bases after his homer tonight (which he looked like he hit with his forearms and nothing else) and his knee did everything but blow steam. It's toast. There is no way he plays another year. I have a hard time seeing him finish THIS year without at least one DL stay just to lay around.

In the olden-before times baseball used to have something called 'a commissioner'. This 'Commish' would probably have just immediately suspeneded Mesa for a week without any prompting by umpires or media. Don't confuse the guy baseball has now with a 'Commish', he's just the coat-check boy.

Perspective. Some bedtime reading of Leo Durocher's autobio "Nice Guys Finish Last" reveals a nugget about how Dizzy Dean was getting his ass kicked one day by the Giants circa 1933, they scored a bunch of runs off him in the first, so he proceeds to hit the next seven batters in a row. Seven. Diff' times. They did finally toss him after the 7th one tho.

I like how Hennessey's recent performance OBvisouly pushed Matt Cain to bear down and try harder, to stop trying to strike everybody out. AAA was looming, definitely. Alou, a couple of well-timed comments to the press, not slagging anybody, just praising a borderlien 5th starter...
