Mike Love's greatest hits:

I was so pounded over the head with Robin Hitchcock in the mid to late 80s that it killed the Soft Boys for me.

I bet.  The cult of Robyn Hitchcock was relentless in those years.  "The weirdo we can all agree upon."  And the shirts!  Jeezis, those fucking shirts.

Those shirts are awesome! I always liked the idea of Robyn/Pete Shelley/Bobby Gillespie getting laid significantly less than they would have due to particularly psychotic clothing choices.

Also, I like the idea of those guys taking acid and staring at a huge stack of their psychedelic ladies blouses.

But, yeah, that 80's solo stuff is a little tasteless and overrated. I wish Peter Buck had taken the same shine to Warren Zevon that he had to Hitchcock, I think that would have been a much more interesting continued relationship.

Hilarious Dando/Regis team-up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw_wzAd-tBQ

I saw a great episode of 120 Minutes where Dando gave some insane speech about how he wanted to cover "Take Me Out To The Ball Game". It is sadly not on YouTube. What a funny guy.

Also, I love Nirvana and everything, but Kurdt Cobain/Steve Albini's prank call to Dando just makes them cruel, hateful and smug. It's not even an imaginative prank call. Whatever, dudes.

I saw Evan Dando play an impromptu set with The Frogs at SUNY Purchase a few years ago. The crowd had no idea who Dando was, and I think I was the only person impressed by his presence. He was with a short girl in a Street Hassle t-shirt, it fuckin' figures. I was thrilled and even had my photo taken with him. Good dude.

I've never understood why the bad-dream, head-trip, nervous-breakdown, shuddering-in-the-corner, psychotic-and-scary masterpiece that is "Car Button Cloth" doesn't get more props.

Nothing against the Taang shit, but damn.

Jerry Harrison shot his (thesis?) film at Harvard on the band before he joined, so that's known to exist. Jonathan Richman is notoriously protective of that band's stuff, so you'll probably never see it. There's about a million great songs on bootlegs that they've never released and easily could, and a number of other ones mentioned in "There's Something About Jonathan" that have never come out in any form, ever. Same with any footage, I think.

Pretty frustrating as a fan, and as Warners own that stuff they could have done a real nice Rhino Handmade box a long time ago.

« on: April 23, 2010, 09:17:33 AM »
Does anybody have an MP3 of the version of "Smash You" with Richie Ramone on vocals? It was on YouTube forever but sadly got taken down and I would love to hear it again.

Can't look at YouTube right now so I dunno if anyone's posted it, but the Classic Albums: Rumors DVD is really great.

Agreed, Loy - especially the sight of Richard Dashut in a Ren and Stimpy t-shirt.

Fans of Rumors and esp. Tusk will def. dig Lindsey's first solo, Law and Order.

True, also, fans of excellent music will dig ALL of Lindsey's solo records - not a stinker in the whole lot. In my opinion the vocal effects on "Go Insane" have never been topped.

A few days after moving to New York I saw Buckingham do a solo show - showed up the day of the show and managed to score a first-row balcony seat. One of the best shows I have ever seen, especially the barking during "Holiday Road" and the fan-requested, impromptu encore of "Save Me A Place".

Carnie Wilson was sitting in the front row, and was visibly bummed out by a very large woman who approached her to clearly tell her what an inspiration she is. A perfect show, marred only by the fact that he added "Bwana" to the set list a few days after I saw him.

Anybody ever seen Buckingham's amazing, presumably coked up SNL performance from Law and Order? One of the most captivating performances I have ever seen. Sadly the pricks at Broadway Media have kept if off YouTube, too bad.

Also, fuck all Welch haters, "Man Overboard" is a great, eccentric record.

Hilarious out takes from a 1982 MTV promo. Christine is drunk and charming and it's obvious why Dennis Wilson was in love with her, and Lindsey predicts the Unabomber look. Unbelievable. I want to hang out with these guys.

Stevie is probably working on her "crystal vision" somewhere.
