Non-Music Shit / Re: Chatroulette finds

One time I was on Chatroulette and I ended up talking to this girl who lives at 538 Johnson, who was very nice and knew who the Great Excape were. That was pretty cool.

I sure pumped a lot of quarters into the arcade game, though.  As well as the X-Men and TMNT arcades.  Didn't care if it was the same game, it was a great game and three of my favorites subjects at the time.  Of the three, I might've liked/played the X-Men one the most -- always preferred either Wolverine or Nightcrawler.

I think that's why I like the X-Men video game better than the Simpsons game - there wasn't anything as dream-come-true in the Simspons game as getting to actually teleport or be fuck shit up with claws.

Sort of off topic, but the worst video game of all time is for sure GHOSTBUSTERS for the NES.

I'm the lone defender of Virtual Bart, mostly for it's varied gameplay, difficulty and the hilarious, tinny soundclip of Homer shouting "VIRTUAL BART", which is up there with the indecipherable "speech" in Blades Of Steel and Double Dribble.

If the discussion is between these two, I would have to say pinball, as the arcade game is amazing but has the same engine as a number of other excellent games - namely, X-Men and TMNT. The pinball game stands out a lot more.

Music Shit / Re: Phil Ochs
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:13:37 AM »
I knew none of this 'til ol' moses tol' me so I've been drummed out of the Phil Ochs Hipster Club.

Up until this post, I had no idea there was even a "Phil Ochs Hipster Club", I'm kind of stunned by this thread.

Totally great underrated Ochs jam: "Song Of My Returning". Such a gorgeous song that would have sounded corny and ham-fisted coming from anybody else. I love his constant nautical references, I have no idea how he got away with that shit. There's some ridiculous version by Billie Joe Armstrong and that Cometbus dude, what a weird cover.

Also, Henry Cow's version of "No More Songs" is a total monster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaBptCea3yA

Cher is totally awesome, come on. Especially "It's The Little Things" and her roles in "Mermaids", "Silkwood", "Mask" and "Come Back To The Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean". Cool lady. Also, her version of "Needles And Pins" is my personal favorite.

Sonny is way cooler though, especially the pop shit on "Inner Views".

"Rehearsals For Retirement" is the bleakest, saddest, most inspiring record of all time and "Greatest Hits" is even sadder, while also being totally fucking hilarious. Two of the most underrated albums of all time - both of which blew me away at fifteen and have sounded better and better every year.

My former roommate was a film archivist for a while, and was equally obsessed with the whole Phil Ochs thing. He was asked to pull any footage of Ochs he could for an upcoming documentary, and knowing that he was at the '68 DNC, pulled every piece of footage he could that said "folk singer" or "singer". He found tons of amazing footage of '68 DNC Ochs that nobody's ever seen before - it's really mind-blowing stuff. It's haunting and incredible to see him, full of hope and optimism, days before the became a broken man. He looks great, too - he's dressed in midily psychedelic clothes with the single coolest glasses I've ever seen. I'm really excited for that movie.

Songs nobody should ever listen to unless they want to be depressed for weeks: "You're All Full Of Shit", a rambling, drunken, depressing rant that Ochs did while in his John Train phase. The first time I heard that I was upset for a really, really long time. It's one thing to read about Ochs drunken, toothless and violent - it's so much worse to actually hear him at the end of his life, muttering "fuck you in the mouth and in the ass" and making pointless references to Charles Manson and Zabreskie Point. Really awful shit.

On the positive side of things, I really love the parts in that book about him eating hamburgers and watching three movies a day. What a dude!

My entire '09 was spent obsessively scouring YouTube for Eliott/Letterman shit. This is probably my personal favorite:

My second fave:

And my third:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwUl9HjahRg

Best shit ever. Also of note: Letterman's amazing "Looking For Fun" HBO special (recently taken down from YouTube, son of a bitch), the time Mickey Rooney was on and Letterman treated him like total shit, and all the comedian George Miller's amazing string of appearances.

Also, everything on here - even the interviews with people you might not care about are incredible. Dave seems drunk every night, both on alcohol and being the king of New York City.

This is a whole different can of worms but can I get a witness to the greatness of Craig Kilborn? After Dave I'd say he is maybe the funniest man ever to tackle late night television - cruel, smart, absurdist and singular. There's never been anybody like him and the world didn't appreciate him when they had him.

This is one of the best records I have ever heard in my entire life.

I asked Larry if he had any Hello Young Lovers promo posters for a friend who is totally Sparks obsessed and Larry sent me the nicest care package in the world. I have never met Larry but from what I understand he is the world's most universally beloved man.

Hats off to Larry.

I'm not sure what happened to that. Juan's number is on the Beets LP's liner notes, you should just give him a call. The Oasis cover on that thing is one of the best things of all time.

Hey dudes,

Spam folders, five e-mails and a ton of shit on my plate can be a bit confusing, apologies if I haven't gotten back to anyone. Releasing thirty things in a year is crazy and overwhelming.

Anybody who is having trouble should e-mail me at info@capturedtracks.com, that's the address I check the most.

If anybody hasn't received shit, let me know and I'll get it out ASAP.

Yeah, the Spectrals record was the problem this time. It ended up being pressed from a very, very, very rejected test-press that was blown out, all low end and would have made needles jump around like crazy. Then we had to wait for labels. Etc, etc etc. Such a nightmare.

Good news:

1.) THE MAYFAIR REPLACEMENTS ARE IN. I'm working on getting these out to everyone who has contacted me, so they should be out there and "in the mix" very soon.

2.) Spectrals finally came in.

I'm a bit behind on some e-mails because I've been busting major ass to get all the remaining orders out (I've had the postage printed out for weeks now.) I got all the non-Spectrals, non-Mayfair orders out, and almost every batch order is on it's way. I've gotten a ton of stuff to distros, and we should be completely caught up very, very soon.

Sorry to anyone who has been waiting. Nobody has the Spectrals record yet, so even if you've seen a few of the records in stores there's still nobody with that except those who's orders have been filled.

If there's weird shit with stuff being late, shoot me and e-mail and I'll try to get back to you ASAP. Hoping to have everything fine and dandy by next week.

Sorry for the bad communication, shit is nuts.

With sincere affection,
Abe
