Preening is a band that is literally bursting with ideas. Their music is chockablock with tension and pressure -- gaskets blowing; pipes exploding; circuit boards fizzling out. A trio comprised of some of the Bay Area's most active underground musicians, Preening are poised to cement themselves as one of their scene's most crucial exponents of non-trad punk. Within Preening's tumultuous music, elements careen and collide -- sax bleats; bass lines access spinal nerve-spots; drums poke and pound. When listening to Preening, one gets the idea that they are hyperactive butterfly-catchers; darting around with manic precision, trying to snare each and every winged creature, no matter how erratic its flight path. This speaks to both their innate curiosity and ability to improvise on a dime's turn.
This year has yielded a mini-deluge of Preening cassettes and EPs. On this release, the trio blast through 5 cuts of controlled chaos, exuding a nonchalant confidence in their mission. "Associated Press" lays it all out on the table -- Alejandra's declarative vocals and commanding bass licks, Sam's busy yet precise drum spasms and Max's saxophone, which honks and squeals like Eric Dolphy was raised at Gilman Street. "PO Box" molds Preening's art-punk into a danceable shape, but still keeping you off-balance while the song reasserts itself with each pass. "Greasetrap Frisbee" is a brief instrumental that closes out the side with everything-and the- kitchen-sink aplomb. On the flip, "Poison" finds Preening slowing down a smidge and focussing on groove as Max wails through both of his wind instruments (voice + sax). Ending with their "Face On," Preening prove to be among the most exciting of a fresh crop of punks not content to regurgitate the same old formula. There's no time like the present to participate. Take a look in the mirror and say Hello to the new you. -e/n

Once in a while, the more enlightened Urglaawers will invite me out for a heady evening of food, spirits & conviviality. They's got this place called Tabernacle (don't worry, it's secret) & let me tell ya-a time can be had there! Last night was no exception, so before I get on the scribble, I'd like to give a few shoutouts for a splendid evening (yep, names is secret too); Ambassador ______.......that hasenpfeffer stew was spot on. Indeed, the addition've braised wild fennel was a nice touch. Charges d'Affaires___-____.....I normally don't go with Gewurztraminer's, but you nailed it. Whatever bio-dynamics you got goin on in there, they's workin overtime. And Plenipotentiary______... three cheers for the prune tart! Alright now. Where was I?
So the main thread've the evening's conversation was this cd by Maximum Ernst with Daniel Carter on Ever/Never. More specifically, how we come to it. And by we I mean ALL of us (you too, reader). So it goes something like this: A big part've the 90's underground scene was an infatuation w/the aesthetics & creative consciousness of the late sixties/early seventies; free jazz, avant-garde & folk (both the cracked & crafted). Lot's was made to look like or embellish releases from ESP, Actuel, Saturn, etc.Remember? Not all of 'em stunk (I still dig that Mouthcrazy lp) but by in large, not a lot've repeats on the honk card. Tulpa Productions was excellent in makin known the Willimantic scene + a couple others what weren't a gyp was by Test & Tenor Rising Drum Expanding, both've w/featured Daniel Carter. So while these outfits was blowin hard, simultaneously,  the whole New Weird America scene was bustin' out it’s noxious ooze. It was a big ol'black hole of suck & you'd need a map to figure out how you'd slide through it w/o gettin spunked (a MASSIVE map-Cartography Ed.). Why mention it? 'Cause the Maximum Ernst fellas-Josh Gordon & E Bradshaw H-seem to've knowed the route. Not a drop on'em. Daniel Carter neither. But that weren't ever in question. So then it's 2017 & here they all is. What happened then?
Short answer-they kill it. Yep. Then they eat it. The first track comprises the slaughter, the whole rest've the set-another 4 tracks-is the breakdown, preparation & eventual feed. Bon appetit, gentlemen. Theys make a good trio too. As they find the collective sweet spot, the flourish builds into an almost Emergency like blare. When that peaks, they thrust the dynamic into a more nebulous realm. Carter's playin remains out in front, but JG 'n EBH got his back. Gordon's guitar is steely yet sublime, very Joseph DeJean. EBH has the good talkin to it on the drums & when it comes to a crackler've radio spat, he's your go-to guy. But just for sport (as Internuncio _____________  is fond of sayin) the Urglaawers likes to imagine what label would've ponied up for it back in the day. The general consensus was C.C. Records (accordin to Appellate _______ ___ ___  _________'s minutes). It was the ultimate tax dodge label back then, so's maybe it’s a compliment. I will say this-you think what you want, but absinthe is a party killer & that's a done deal. Listen to these drunk, neo pagan rubes.....C.C. Records. That's a good one. I had to side w/Proxy ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ___________________, who said it would've been a perfect fit for Futura. I hear that. It's got a heavy, sketched out experimento-tick twitchin throughout, leavin it outside the purists parameters of either jazz or prog. It could kick back between the Sahib Shihab/Gilson Unit & Semool releases. Honestly these guys could work it anywhere. It's like Potentate ________________________ _____says, "just don’t suck." And people wonder how he come to be a Potentate. C'mon! With pearls like that, how could he not be?
