If you're bummed on Apollonia purifying herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, I don't even know...

PRINCE SUCKS. PURPLE RAIN IS A LOT OF THINGS, BUT IT IS NOT CITY ROCK

Hey, I'm not talking about his music, I'm talking about the plot of Purple Rain.

I discussed this with a friend, and while they may be controversial I decided to leave it to the committee.

Some (potential) City Rocker Films:

Roadhouse.
I know what you're thinking!  "Too country!"  "Jeff Healey band isn't city!"  But you must remember the beginning of the film.  Dalton is a city boy (LA!)!  He was called out to Missouri to clean up the Double Duece.  I'll admit that Dalton does possess some qualities which are definitely not CITY ROCK, such as being educated and practicing tai chi.  Maybe not a film about CITY ROCK but something a CITY ROCKER could enjoy?  I'm sure they do drink Michelob in the Double Duece.

Purple Rain
CITY R&B?  If The Kid played Rock this could be the quintessential CITY ROCK film.  So many elements are present.  I could see a true City Rocker hating it, but I'm sure his girlfriend could enjoy it.

yeah, i had hardly gone there since like 1997.  the last few years i stopped in once in awhile to look through the used stuff but never really found much.  i had heard of the fabled basement and the things thought to lurk down there and once i found out they were starting to put stuff out from down there, even before i knew they were closing, i started stopping in way more often.  why when they found out they were in financial trouble didn't just start selling all the basement crap on ebay or gemm or something, i have no idea.  the owner seems like a solid dude though, maybe he just wanted to keep all this stuff in milwaukee?

Atomic was really good in its day, but I thought the used section took a huge downturn in quality already by about '94. Prior to that, it was always a matter of what I had to put back so I could still have enough gas money to get back to Appleton. Later on they became the last stop outta town, if $$ remained for records...and I wasn't hurting from eating too much. Used to love Oakland Gyros across the street in my pre-veggie days.

The only store I truly miss from Milwaukee is Ear Waves. I mean, Dave closed up shop in like 1991 or something, but that was truly an amazing store for punk vinyl and regional demos. Plus, being a little punk kid and seeing Die Kreuzen members working there was pretty cool to me.

it had to have been later than '91.  i had bought some of my first punk rock singles there, i was probably in 10th grade.  that had to have been around 94.  it was open for a couple more years after that for sure.  i remember when farwell opened it must have inherited some of the stock because some records still had those little hand written descriptions on them.

What about later Eddie Money stuff like "Walk On Water"?  I only ask because that was my favorite song at 9 years old.  I remember taping it off the radio over and over again onto the same tape.  Hoping to bolster my CITY ROCK STREET CRED.  Sadly I doubt this tune will pass muster.  Lots of good "na-na-na's" though.

I should mention that this same tape also had Roxette's "The Look" taped onto it over and over again.  Also another "na-na-na" song.  Also killing my CITY ROCK cred.  But still a SICK mix!

oh i forgot i also did get a Chas Jankel LP from Prospect based off the simple fact that "NUMBER ONE" from the Real Genius Soundtrack is one of the sickest montage jams of all time.  Too bad the LP is pretty much the worst thing ever.  Nothing like the faux new wave of "NUMBER ONE", almost disco if I remember right.

So now that Atomic's closed, what're some fav finds that you got after the stuff was dredged up from the basement?

Without thinking about it too much a few of mine are
Pointed Sticks - Out of Luck 45
Shivvers 45
Haskels 45
4 or 5 Sex Pistols Picture Sleeve 45s

F U C K

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN!??!

No kidding!  How much did you end up paying for those??  I was excited about finding the Orbits single, but wow!

Seriously, fuck you and your mother.  I found dick!  An Oil Tasters single I didn't even want was all I eeked outta that hovel.  How many cocks did you suck?

Just a couple of cocks.  Before they had started putting out the Lps in earnest I asked "Hey, you guys got any singles?"  "Yeah a ton, but I doubt we'll ever get to them" "Ok, hey if you do run across a Shivvers single gimme a call."

A week or two later they called with a Shivvers for me.  As far as I've heard I think in total they found four or five of them, only one with the spray painted cover though.  One was actually on the wall for a day or two for I think $75.  Must not have been as nice of a copy, mine is pretty much brand new, I paid a little more than that.

As for the other stuff, I simply just went every single day.  I was conveniently home sick from work the day they put out all the singles so I was able to amble over there at noon and get the first look through everything.  As my stack grew, they were still putting stuff out.  I simply couldn't afford to spend anymore money and I had to leave.  I'm sure I missed plenty of stuff.  My only regret is having a couple GG Allin singles in my hand and putting them back because they were more pricey than the other things I was getting.

For the next couple of days they were still putting out more singles, that's when they put out the local stuff box.  The first day it was crap.  The second day they added more to the box, and like half the stuff on the Henry Weld "Punk Rock In Wisconsin" page was represented.  I asked about the Orbits, it wasn't in there yet, "Oh we found one, we just haven't found a sleeve for it, but we'll let you know."  That's the last I heard of that thing.  I'm glad someone here got ahold of it though.

I had my eye on the Queer Pills single, I just didn't want to pay $40 for it so I missed out.  I did grab the 3 Hits from Hell 7" a couple days before they closed, 30% off I think.

I got plenty of other less exciting stuff, some nice post punk lps, Magazine, The Sound, stuff like that.  A couple of Swans LPS.  Joy Division Live Amsterdam LP.  Too many Hip Hop Lps, EPMD, Public Enemy, Eazy E, those kinda things.  I did best with singles, stuff from Black Flag, Blue Orchids, Subway Sect, PIL, Penetration, Skids, Gang of Four, Chesterfield Kings, Heartbreakers, plus the other stuff I mentioned, probably 100-200 singles total.

I funded all this selling Nintendo Games on Ebay plus tax return season, I have no idea how much money I spent in total.  I doubt I'd want to know.

As for prospect mall, I checked out what they had right before the doors closed, only thing I got was a Josie Cotten "Johnny Are you Queer" 12", and it's warped as shit.  I slept on Farwell moving, did they have some big sales?

I would say that if there were a token woman City Rocker it would have to be Benetar.

Seconded.

13 pages in less than six hours? Great job you guys.

This is the most important thread in the history of termbo.

I know I'm new here, but can we get someone to whip up a top regarded CITY ROCK playlist and upload to rapidshit or whatevs?  Would be perfect to listen to at work, blue collar and all.

YES.  And that is the appropriate way to celebrate the most important thread.  It's not like you can just turn on the radio and hear this stuff very often, what with rock and roll not being as good as it used to be.

It's not like I got laid off from the steel stamping mill today or anything, but I'm dealing with these godawful studio flashes and I certainly feel like I could use a MICHELOB and some tunes that relate to my working day pain.

Scraping the other end of the barrel, what about arena rock bands with lyrics exploring the plight of the working class?  I'm thinking specifically of Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer and/or Skid Row - 18 and Life.  While musically they may be far from the Segers and the Scaggs of the world, you have to give them credit for making 15 year old girls think about the hardships in Johnny and Ricky's lives.

You might as well add Journey's  "Don't Stop Believing" is to the list of arena rock bands who faked city rock. Bon Jovi's from Jersey, so I don't think they were faking it, though.

Steve Perry solo...CITY ROCK or CITY NOT?!?!?
aw man you just made me think of oh sherry and now the goddamn thing wont leave my head...also, then if there is(shudder) 'yacht rock' is it a bastard offspring or something entirely different here? we need more stringent guidelines for this...

Yes, I'd like to see where ARENA CITY ROCK (?) overlaps on this diagram also.
