Nevermind the blog, a lot of people have one. It's just that they are mostly crap pictures of a lot of bands I like, that's all. Can't life be that simple sometimes? Can't pictures of bands/punters be of better quality? It's not like you can't pull the trick with a digital camera of average price. Just drink cheaper beer and put a little more thought on your models. Duh.

I've managed a young punk band from Wisconsin in 1987-1988. Their name was Nazi Woman, and they were a bunch of greedy drug-takers who would steal all your money and sleep with your little sister, all while playing the most abravise fuck you music you've ever heard. Good times.

I've never met a communist who was influenced by a garage rock band, let's put it this way. Not if they were serious about their communism, anyway.

The Velvet Underground
Neil Young
Sonic Youth

At their best the three of them make me want to get up in the morning, even if I'm feeling like complete shit.

Jesse 2009

Why is it always the ugliest-looking people who make an issue about looks? Not even plastic surgery would entitle you to comment on body sizes, let alone the fact that you probably get laid only with girls who need to get drunk to objectify you sexually.

That interview was really entertaining. The dude seems to understand that giving interviews is as much performance as getting on stage, which is a lost art. Megalomaniacal shit talking is way more fun to read than a straight interview or one chock full of in-jokes.

I can see what you mean, in a way, in that it reads like something out of the NME or the Melody Maker from the 80's to mid-90's. If you change the name of the Matt dude to Bobby or Noel,  it could have almost been a Primal Scream or Oasis interview at their drunken best. Perhaps to really give it a more entertaining kick up the arse he needed a yobbish interviewer like Steven Wells. He did a fantastic job with Sonic Youth, once, and they played the game with humour, without coming across as pompous or dull.

"though these quotes seemingly contradict, i think what he is saying is that TNV has great songs and don't have to use lo-fi to mask shittiness and lack of aptitude. that its less calculated."

It seems more like what he's saying is that lo-fi sucks unless you're his friends.

Also, Vivian Girls don't sound particularly lo-fi to me.

i will admit he comes off a little duplicitous. but i do read there that he says that TNV doesn't suck and that bands like vivian girls do.

and though i do think the v-girls are lo-fi (the reverb on everything isn't exactly tapehiss) they aren't as much as many. maybe it's less hiss and more reverb that disguises the fact they can't play. frankly i am always surprised when people who like good music like them. thats when i start to believe its more a "don't upset the herd thing" or "i don't wanna seem uncool thing" vs. real taste or insight. dunno, they seem nice so maybe thats it. no one wants to make them cry.

You don't even know what lo-fi sounds like.

no you're right. i only live in brooklyn and have been listening to all this "bedroom punk" garage band-tape-recorder-shitty equipment crap and seeing the bands play live for a while now. outside off all of the other older shit that has been coming out for decades. and some of it is overly digital i have heard all of the vivian girls recordings and watched them get torched off of the stage basically everytime they play. do they absolutely suck? no. but they aint that good. nothin personal against them. just think they are hype. bands tv ghost and psychedelic horseshit are what you all call lo-fi (which is a stupid label anyway because it really can mean anything from 20's field recordings to sebadoh to fucking neil young). i thought you, HIV cockchewer or whatever your name is could maybe use a little comprehensive reading instead of me having to type slowly and break down the history and definition of low fidelity recording techniques. obviously you are too stupid. did the vivian girls emerge from the "weird punk" lo-fi scene and have crappy early recordings and disguise their lack of "chops" and songwriting with cute vocals and tons of reverb? yes yes and yes. its crazy how people get so defensive when it comes to that band

just because i upset you and your vivian girls fetish right? step to me when you take the fucking cock outta your prolapsed overused anus and the vivian girls off of repeat in your 20-disc CD changer you dunce.

What are you on about? Your post doesn't make any sense. Nevermind.

That was a joke, by the way. When they're great, I think they're blinding, just inconsistent. One of those cases when sketchiness becomes your worst enemy. Anyway, they are one of the best bands around for sure.

Psychedelic Horseradish. Same interesting, but ultimately forgettable taste. Great on a good day, when combined with daily flavours that agree with it. Much less when tasted on its own.

Quote
plus Psychedelic Horseshit sound to me like a band that hasn't yet the delivered the record I think they could deliver

Once they have, they can say whatever they like...for SIX months, untouchable. First single is great, album is spotty, live they fell apart last time I saw them.

He's playing a sort of Mark E Smith role with this rant, which we could use in the independently-released musical underground in 2009.

Just as soon as he puts out something as good as Grotesque.

I'm not an insane Fall fan like you probably get in this sort of place. I love what I've heard and dislike a lot of it in equal measure, plus I couldn't give less of a shit about a lot of what Mark E Smith has to say, but this Matt guy sounds exactly like him on this interview, which would be an interesting thing if it was the first time I happened to go through it.

Really, how many times can you go on like this without sounding predictable? Let the records do the talk first, then rip the shit out of anyone you want on interviews. How are Vivian Girls lo-fi, anyway? They aren't hyper-fi like a lot of pop, sure, but the way they sound isn't exactly a wreckage either. It suits the sort of songs they write, regardless of personal taste. Wavves is boring crap, though.

I agree with the whole recording thing he mentions, but he sounds a little confused and too bothered about some messageboard he doesn't even read, plus Psychedelic Horseshit sound to me like a band that hasn't yet delivered the record I think they could deliver.

The Velvet Underground mention is an interesting one, in that they didn't set themselves out to sound they way they did at all, what with having people like Reed and Cale in their ranks, certainly the most anal people about sound I can think of right now. It's as simple as this, if this guy talks it like he walks it, the next record he puts out, regardless of my own taste, will sound like something else. For the time being, words are only that....WORDS.
