We've got a bunch of new 7" and cassette releases, check em out below:

Pookie and The Poodlez - Young Adult Cassette
Following in the footsteps of Nobunny and The Younger Lovers, Oakland's newest prince of garage pop has arrived. His first album "The Last Thing I Did As Teenager" (released on Nobunny's Rubber Vomit imprint) was highly praised by fans and critics alike, landing itself on one of Pitchfork's 2014 best of list. Now returning with his 2nd album " Young Adult", Pookie hones his craft even further creating an instant pop classic. Recorded in Oakland, CA by Jason Testasecca (Nobunny, Elvis Christ).

Courtney and The Crushers - Mountainous Cassette
If you live in the Bay Area you won't need an introduction to Courtney Castleman. She's been making music, putting on shows, and been a huge contributor to the Bay Area music scene for years. A few months ago I stopped by JT Recording Studios to finalize some details on the new Pookie and the Poodlez LP with engineer Jason Testasecca. While at the studio Pookie informed me that Courney's band Courntey and the Crushers happened to be in the studio that same day recording new material. Always interested in the band, I was curious to hear the songs once they were complete. As it turns out, Courtney and I must have had a telepathic connection, because shortly after, the songs appeared in my inbox. These songs are reminisce of 90's pop and 60's garage, making it a perfect fit for a Southpaw. If you're a fan of heavyhitters Shannon & the Clams, Peach Kelli Pop and Colleen Green, this is surely a band for you!

The Younger Lovers - Pogo Punk cassingle

Warm Soda - Renegade Mode 7"
The latest Warm Soda LP has been our soundtrack to the summer. Recently, after checking in with Matthew Melton to see if had any new material in the works, we discovered he'd been sitting on a song that was released on a limited cassette during Warm Soda's 2014 tour. In addition, he had just finished up a new song titled, No Place To Fall. The two make an excellent paring and so a new Warm Soda 7″ is born!

Pleasers - Reject Teen 7"
After spending over half a decade in the Bay Area, Matthew Melton has now settled into Austin, TX. Melton was a Bay Area pioneer we knew we would surely miss having close, but shortly after settling into his new adopted home town, he team up with good friend, Ben Tipton and naturally, Pleasers were born. As soon as we caught wind that these two creatives were teaming up we were excited! Melton and Tipton also teamed up with drummer Julian Young and the trio recorded two instant hits, Reject Teen and Judy.

Fans of Melton's earlier work with Bare Wires (especially Artificial Clouds and Idle Dreams) should be eager to hear these tunes. We personally love when Melton shows his punk roots and Pleasers are bringing it 110%. Be sure to check out this band live when you're in the Austin area!

7" comes in glue pocket jacket.

Matthew Melton - Too Many Hearts Lack Lovers 7"
Less than a week after Melton delivered this new Warm Soda 7″, two additional songs appeared in our inbox. Melton informed us that he was also working on a new solo album and had just finished up two tracks. Melton asked if we would be interested in releasing these as a new solo 7″, to which of course we agreed. The A side, Too Many Hearts Lack Lovers, is a unique turn for Melton and we hope to see more of this kind of output. These new singles are a perfect representation that he's one the best current songwriters out there.

We have some new releases coming out around the end of the month/early May. Also for the first time ever Southpaw shirts! Check em out!

The Hussy/Digital Leather split 12"
When we first heard the talk of these two bands doing a split our interests were instantly piqued but we had no idea the turnout would be this good. Digital Leather's side give us six tracks of what Shawn called "love songs". These tracks are down right catchy but depressing at the same time, absolutely killer!
The Hussy gave us seven blistering punk tracks including a cover of Digital Leather's "Studs In Love"! Shawn also plays on four of The Hussy songs and this is some of our favorite material to date.
Includes digital download.

ADVLTS debut 7"
This is the first in a new series we are doing featuring only local Baltimore bands.

Advlts started as a joke. A cover band no one wanted ruining an otherwise enjoyable Friday night at the saloon. Three middle aged guys who used to be in bands together reunite in millennial Baltimore for the first time in a long while and in no bands whatsoever. A plan is hashed out over beers in the charismatic front man's soon-to-be-foreclosed-upon living room: learn all twenty-six minutes of the 1978 debut album by seminal Belgian punk rock band The Kids and play them at people, with yelling and sweating and spitting all over the microphones. Adults. Kids. Get it? No? It seemed reasonable at the time. They performed this Vegas lounge act twice. It didn't sound so great, so they found another middle aged guy to scratch at a Stratocaster and squeal at people. That sounded better, so they wrote a bunch of "original" songs and played those at people instead of the Kids songs. They still like the Kids, of course. And Johnny Moped. And Charley Patton. And the Weirdos. And Really Red. And the Mekons. And Roky Erickson. They like their own guitars just fine. Not yours. In fact, they prefer you stop playing your guitars altogether. The music of this particular Advlts band is, for better or worse, punk rock music. Fast songs faster. Short songs shorter. Small amps turned up and frying. An excess of black and yellow bile. Advlts practice with rats. Advlts record in a hallway. Advlts write hooks, then hide them. Advlts make racket. Advlts do these things willfully, perversely, for their own sake. They will do so as long as they like.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Bare Wires - Idle Dreams LP
« on: September 24, 2012, 04:08:34 PM »
The final Bare Wires LP is up for Pre order now, info below:

Front man Matthew Melton of Bare Wires seemed to care about two things; writing hook heavy garage songs and taking these songs on the road every chance he could get. Whether he was touring the U.S. with Thee Oh Sees, opening for Mark Sultan in Europe, or playing a house show somewhere inbetween, the band just never stopped. Yet, after spending the last three years being the uncontested kings of the road, Bare Wires are dead. The Oakland staple crumbled during SXSW this year. After failed performances one member ended up hospitalized and another MIA. Melton packed up the van and headed home, knowing that Bare Wires had run its course.

From the ruins of this tour comes the last Bare Wires record. The album unintentionally takes us through the Bare Wires timeline. Melton's influences unfold from his early worship of Stooges/Gories to the later imprints of Glam/Power Pop-heavy records recalling T-Rex and Gary Glitter.
Although it may not have been evident while churning out these final bittersweet songs that this would be the end of Bare Wires, Melton certainly made it count. From the ashes of Bare Wires comes Melton's final masterpiece, Idle Dreams.

Digital Leather will be shipping this week!

Digital Leather - Yes, Please. Thank You Cassette
8 new songs! Limited to 200 copies

Defiant, dark, weird- Digital Leather, aka Shawn Foree, is an unflinching subterranean force, compulsively moving against the grain while making some of the most interesting music you've never heard. Electronic goth records for garage labels and hard-to-grasp concept records for larger indie labels keeps DL a free agent, which is a good thing because every record is always different. And there a lot of records.

Yes, Please. Thank You is the first DL record that focuses mainly on a full band sound. Foree has absorbed a lot in his tenure as an artist, and he wrings it out in this album- from punk to darkwave, surf, even afro-beat. The songs are succinct. The sound is big. The tone is bleak. You might want to smash your fist through a wall. You might want to dance like it's the end of the world.

Warm Soda - Reaction 7"

Following the fateful final tour of Bare Wires, front man Matthew Melton rose quicker than Lazarus, assembling a fresh power trio within days of returning to Oakland. Warm Soda retains an urgency honed in the garage, but as their debut single "Reaction," on Southpaw Records illustrates, the tension and restraint of cult power pop has seemed into the group's psyche. Beneath Melton's dulcet and wispy vocals telling of youth's forlorn romanticism, glitter-laden guitar swipes ascend with tasteful dynamic considerations and insistent percussion propels the hook-laden ditty into oblivion. Supporting the release of "Reaction," Warm Soda, comprised of Melton along with Sam Lefebvre and Frank Ene, begin a 33 date national tour on September 17th.
