Two new LPs from the best bands in Canada: Babysitter and Hag Face.

"Babysitter" is the eponymous sophomore LP (after 7 full length cassettes) from the Victoria, BC/Montreal, QC rock band who deftly blend anthemic grunge rock with stoner wankery of the highest order. Cover art by comics legend Marc Bell.

Hag Hace's "R.I.P." is a brilliant mix of Huggy Bear, Babes in Toyland, Discharge, and Kleenex. Primo stuff that works across some really familiar vibes while also sounding wholly unique. Songs are either fast and rhythmic or slow-burning like the one below. A couple of the fast tunes are coming out soon, so I cant link yet. Here's a slow one:

You can pre-order both of these now at: http://psychichandshake.bigcartel.com/, though both records are done & shipping to us now. We have switched up our webstore to work on Canadian dollars, so Americans can basically pick up our records for a song (a piddling $15 CDN each). Maybe it's time you started! We also put out the most recent Shearing Pinx LP and people here slept on that for some reason. It is incredible....

Distros are invited to get in touch as well.

PSYCHIC HANDSHAKE MOVING SALE

Psychic Handshake Recordings will be relocating to Kingston, Ontario this summer. Montreal has been home to the label since its inception in 2007, so we are sad to leave; but we are looking forward to the future in the Limestone City.

To celebrate and help make this relocation a little easier we are having a massive moving sale on all in stock items. This includes records by Shearing Pinx, Sex Church, Babysitter, UBT, Outdoorsmen, and more.

Using promo code MOVE you will get 50% off all items in our webstore at www.psychichandshake.bigcartel.com

That works out to $6.00 for LPs, $2.50 for 7?s and cassettes, and $5.00 for CDs. Canadian shipping prices still apply, but this is a great opportunity to buy in bulk because the shipping cost per item goes down the more you have in your package.

This sale will run from now until July 20th. At that point the label will close up shop for a month or so. After that we will be returning with two absolutely killer new records.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Psychic Handshake 40% Holiday Sale
« on: December 04, 2014, 03:41:19 PM »

http://psychichandshake.bigcartel.com/

We've had quite a few new releases this year, need to make some space, having a huge sale. Everything is on sale, including brand new and back catalogue Psychic Handshake releases as well as a few distro items like the latest Pink Noise album.

Not sure if I've had a chance to promote this year's releases on termbo. These are them:

Shearing Pinx - "People" LP. So new I'm still assembling these puppies & will probably make another post. This is the umpteenth album from Canada's only noise punk band. Long abstract songs, but probably groovier than most SHPX albums as a result of relatively new bass player, S.Koke. Absolutely killer stuff.

Legato Vipers - "LV" LP. Adroit and Amusing instrumental surf music from small town Ontario. Recorded off the floor in about an hour, and not a flub on this thing. Amazing live band and they don't disappoint on record. Easily the most incredible packaging we've had the pleasure of releasing as well: branded pleather jackets & translucent seafoam vinyl. We're just throwing our money away over here!

Brazilian Money - S/T cassette. 42 minutes of hi-fi re-recordings of tunes from the extensive back catalogue of Edmonton, Alberta's Brazilian Money. Very funny, intelligent, skewed, and catchy diy pop in the vein of Elephant 6 bands and Department Store Santas.

You'll Never Get to Heaven - Adorn 12" (6 song) EP. Masterful sample-based dream pop along the lines of Cocteau Twins & Julee Cruise, as well as Fennesz, The Caretaker, etc. Includes covers from Before and After Science and Satie. I also have the last copies of the bands debut full-length of Halifax, NS' Divorce Records, and it is a real treat for fans of On-U Sound type of stuff.

Besides the above, we have a bunch of back catalogue titles on sale including records from Babysitter, Sex Church, UBT, Drainolith, Outdoorsmen, Vomit Squad, and so on.

There are songs to listen to at the store, which is right here: http://psychichandshake.bigcartel.com/

Thanks!

Psychic Handshake Recordings is very happy to finally announce the vinyl release of Victoria, BC band Babysitter's debut LP, Eye.

Since forming a few years back, the band has self-recorded nine full-length cassettes of PACNW rock and roll that recalls The Wipers, Archers of Loaf, and the like. Eye is something like a greatest hits compilation of this material, but the tunes have been re-recorded professionally for maximum punch.

Here's a song: https://soundcloud.com/psychic-handshake/babysitter-talkin-bout-the-new

And here's another one: https://soundcloud.com/psychic-handshake/babysitter-angel-of-death

If you wanna stream the whole thing you can do that here: http://babysitter.bandcamp.com/

You can purchase the record through our webstore, but please forgive the insane shipping rates. Canada Post has discontinued surface shipping to USA/international, so it will be airmail from now on. I have tried everything I can to keep prices low, but I'm at a loss. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm eager to hear.

Buy it now: http://psychichandshake.bigcartel.com/

Non-Music Shit / Quebec student strike getting pretty gnarly
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:26:47 AM »
No talk of the Quebec student strike on here, but it's getting pretty gnarly.  Last night the police turned on a relatively small demonstration that followed the expulsion of the Coalition large de l'ASSE from talks with the Minister of Education and the breakdown of those talks.  Of course, the news is spinning this the way it always does: violent protestors, unsympathetic polls, etc; but they are playing with fire here.  The demonstrations are definitely going to continue and intensify now that the semester is over for sympathetic students who were unwilling or unable to abandon classes.  These kids aren't gonna be able to find any fucking work this summer, so they might as well get involved in the struggle that keeps showing up on their facebook feeds.

It will also be interesting to see how this plays out on a larger scale.  On a provincial level, Parti Quebecois has been endorsing the strike, but it seems to be hurting them with the dissolution of the talks and the recent spin.  I don't know if I buy this polling.  On a national level, this will probably hurt the NDP, who rose to become the official opposition on the strength of their support in Quebec, but they have done a good job of distancing themselves from the movement.

OUT NOW ON MONTREAL'S PSYCHIC HANDSHAKE RECORDINGS

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - YT//ST

A psychedelic fusion of Pan-Asian rock, folk, pop, and prog musics from this Montreal/Toronto collective helmed by Alaska B (drums, keys, samples, programming) and Ruby Kato Attwood (vocals).  Features Shub Roy from Grand Trine on guitar, Walter Scott from Dead Wife on auxiliary percussion, and some of the best rock organ playing I've ever heard from Brendan Swanson.  Truly Canada's most exciting band right now.  White vinyl LP in a first edition of 500 comes with digital download card... RETAIL PRICE: $15.00

Two tracks:

http://soundcloud.com/psychic-handshake/yamantaka-sonic-titan-hoshi

Drainolith - "You Paid For It" b/w "Deepwater, PA"

Two sides of AIDS Wolf Axe-slinger and one half of Thames, Alex Moskos' solo-electronics/guitar outfit, Drainolith. Blending noise and rigorous song craft, these two numbers recall post-Absolutes Sightings material & Ciccone Youth's Whitey Album.  Edition of 300 on 7" black vinyl.  RETAIL PRICE: $5.50

The B-Side: http://soundcloud.com/psychic-handshake/drainolith-deep-water-no-cars

We also have a T-Shirt available to buy.  Here's a photo of it:

Only a few smalls and mediums left right now.  Lots of large and X-Large.

All of the above + other Psychic Handshake Recordings titles (including some down to the last copies) are available to buy in our shitty web store*: http://psychichandshake.bigcartel.com/

*Because we are now shipping from Canada, I recommend placing orders for more than just a single LP... Canada Post is extremely expensive for a single LP, but you can add additional items without considerably affecting the shipping cost.  I mean, it's gonna go up, but the cost of shipping per record will average out to something more reasonable with larger orders.

Music Shit / Wedding Reception Songs
« on: August 15, 2011, 01:37:47 PM »
I think I remember a thread about this, but the search is still down.

My girl's sister is getting married and I've been put in charge of compiling a playlist, and burning discs for some hack wedding DJ (who is somehow getting paid pretty handsomely for the work I'm doing).

I'm just trying to pull songs off the top of my head... motown, Bowie, old top 40... obvious stuff because it needs to be really accessible & familiar music.

Basically, I want to prevent this hired DJ from selecting a single song.  I've been to weddings where one of these guys will play something like the Dixie Cups then the Contours... and you reluctantly get up to dance because you're drunk and you don't to be a stick in the mud, but then buddy hits you with something like Kid Rock or Sweet Child of Mine or who the fuck knows.

Looking for suggestions for fairly obvious upbeat tracks and some other stuff to slip in there without alarming or frightening people with the particularly unfamiliar.  Or hell, whatever.
15

Thinking about doing a run of T-Shirts.  For bands etc. who've done this, what would you say is a normal distribution of sizes/genders. What percent sold were women's smalls, mediums, larges?  What percent were men's smalls, mediums, larges, x-larges?
