Hits & Misses is the obvious Toronto punk store, but can't really leave out Frantic City either.  A few blocks south of H&M on Ossington between Dundas and Queen, not as big but it's easy to spend money there and the two stores compliment one another nicely.  H&M is totally on top of new releases, specializing in current punk, hardcore, garage and metal, while Frantic City is definitely more garage-oriented with other genres, punk and otherwise, also well-represented.  Half the stock is books, too, which I find myself buying as much as vinyl.

Basically, visit Pete at Hits & Misses to buy the new Nobunny LP, Remains 2xLP reissue or a rare old hardcore EP off the wall; visit Tim at Frantic City to buy original Kinks or Flamin' Groovies LP, the newest Ugly Things or a second-hand copy of Rock and the Pop Narcotic.  Needless to say, the correct option is to go to both, on payday.

Totally agree.  I was basically scurrying back and forth between the two when in Toronto last boxing week.  Great discount on top of already very reasonably priced used & new stock.  Wasn't pickin up any especially rare stuff, but when all was said and done I was extremely happy to get what I got for what I dropped.

Obviously, Cheap Thrills and Sonik are tops in MTL.  Fantastic folks running both - I hit Cheap Thrills more because it's near my bank(!), but I might favour Sonik for the deals Mathieu cuts. I've never come away w/ any particularly great scores from Le Pick Up, but I feel like this is possible.  I've never been to Aux 33 Tours, but I'd like to.  The worst fuckin place is Primitive for doing dubious and dishonest business & asking ridiculous prices for records in terrible shape.  Oh, and Warren from Mississippi records' "Backroom Records" is definitely worth one's time for wholesale prices on Mississippi releases & cheap used stuff.

PS: 'A Taste of Complete Perspective' is available on vinyl. If you bug the Teenage USA records guy, he'll send you a copy.  http://www.teenageusarecordings.com/catalogue.html

Sweet Jesus, I had no idea.  Imma order that now.  I really, really, dislike Eric's Trip, but I'm really into Elevator.

Darkness -> Light & August came out on Blue Fog & that's the guy from Rotate This, right?  Some great releases on the label, but I don't understand the CD only releases & not much push.  eg. Andre Ethier's on the label.  The 2nd of 3 planned Andre Ethier albums just came out on CD only - I gather that when the 3rd is eventually finished the albums will be released on vinyl as a 3LP boxset.  This strikes me as kind of silly - just release 'em.  I'm also really into the Wyrd Visions LP on Blue Fog.

Anyway, back to Elevator.  Darkness -> Light has some of the best soft-psych, blissful kinda tune-age I've ever heard.  I think I prefer it to August.

Yeah.  More ELEVATOR.

I like long drives in Canada - at least there aren't any toll roads.  Or, wait, there's the 407.

I'm sad to say I've never been East of HoMa in MTL.

Most of all I want to go Newfoundland/Labrador & Gros Morne in particular.

Step One: casual dismissal of something you couldn't actually care less about.

Step Two: inflammatory replies to response of overly earnest targets.

Step Three: repeat ad infinitum until work day over.

Yeah, no big deal, pal.  Not riled up at my end.  But earnestly, I'm sorry to read that your work day inspires this sort of compulsive and self-contradictory active apathy.  Perhaps your chakras need aligning... lol lol lol... kidding!  Just put on that School Jerks tape & get some fresh air.  Hey, weren't these dudes supposed to drop a single on PTrash?  Where's that already?  Also, seriously, you would totally dig the MTL band Ilegal.

Since it was me that posted "Aids Wolf" first in an alphabetical list of presently active MTL bands variedly heralded by a variety of folks who might share tastes with people who post here, I feel obliged to note that I cannot think of another remotely interesting MTL band that appears closer to the beginning of the alphabet.  Anyone?

Um how 'bout...  Aardwolf...  The Aardwolves?

Not into the cosmic noise hippies, of course, but I think it would be difficult to objectively argue that Yannick of AW is not eking out a little place for himself amongst best avant-garde drummers in the world.  Rest of the band fills out his blasts fairly adeptly.  What more do you want from a band included on a list of remotely noteworthy bands from MTL?

Oh, and dude, what appears "hipster" about the names of a bunch of bands you've never heard.  None of these bands are named "The V-neck Unitards" or "Thee Fixed Gears."  I don't know anyone who could afford either of these things.

TO -> MTL Pink Noise is tops, but the Vancouver one ain't bad.

Canada & MTL in particular seem pretty retarded w/ band-name-trends

eg. AIDS Wolf, Wolf Parade, We are Wolves, Lieder Wolf (joke Germanic choral ensemble).

or. Twin Crystals, Crystal Castles, other shit, I'm sure

Save for Vancouver, Edmonton, ON, MTL, and Halifax, I don't have much idea what's going on up here.

Halifax has some okay stuff assembling itself.  Is everything going on in Vancouver sort of crumbling apart right now?

Montreal is owning it... (there's actually an active thread about this on the local board right now)...but here's the top of the slop...

AIDS Wolf / Hiroshima Thunder solo drum stuff
American Devices
Corpusse (MTL in my book)
Dead Wife
Demon's Claws
Dirty Beaches
Dirty Wedding
Double Dip
Drainolith
The Enjoyer
The Facials
Foreign Bodies
Tim Hecker
Ilegal
Judy/Judith
Maggot Breeder
Menace Ruine
Phil Console (& his various other projects)
Pink Noise
Red Mass/Choyce
The Slobs
Switzerland
Thisquietarmy
Ultrathin
Unireverse
Velvet Chrome

And so many more that aren't popping into my head right now.  There's a lot of indy rock shit too.  Gotta go renew my license.

Wooden Shjips
Nothing People

Dig that Pheromoans 7" & I'm excited for more.

The Black Randy reish is easily the best thing I have spent & will spend money on this year.
