Cities / Re: Montreal, Canada
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:34:04 PM »

No one here has jobs... just bands!  Or, if you want 20hrs a week on the phone, you can do that.

Without question, the best Poutine in the city is "AA" on Notre-Dame in the St. Henri 'hood.

Otherwise, pretty slim pickings for food in St. Henri.  Nothing but diners except for "Bon Appetit au Carib" (which is pretty fantastic West Indian).

For everything but food, St. Henri rules.  Cheap rent, generally around 4 acceptable to great shows a week, etc. etc.

I had a Papusa a couple weeks ago... first time... that was a delicious meal for about $2.50.  Some place up on St. Zotique E. of St. Denis called "Carreta, I think, but apparently there are a few El Salvadorian places up there.

In general, Montreal is the best place I've ever been.  Sometimes you forget that, but then you have weekend that begins with band practice, then on to catch this local Mexican hardcore band covering Massacre 68 & R.I.P, then you climb a mountain in the rain, then you eat an Indian feast for $6.00, stroll past a show for some "hi, how are yas", drink on a rooftop, opt out of some parties to go home with yer lady, then go to the thrift & score a few Gary U.S. Bonds 45s for quarters, then for Orange Julips at the big orange, then you help hook-up some fx for your lady's "headcoatees but weeeeird" project, go home and read a book, then wake-up & realize that Monday's a holiday and you go for a BBQ on a highway on-ramp closed for construction.

I grew up where certain scenes in Stand by Me were filmed.  Richard Dreyfus is a tool, except when he's playing a tool (eg. What About Bob?), but that movie really resonated with me and my friends...  so much so that we spent years hiking the same railway tracks, camping out, and doing drugs on Summer weekends.

Does Freaks & Geeks count, or are the characters too old?

HAHAAHA.  That picture of CU Boulder looks exactly like Montreal - all the time - or at least every Sunday.

Seriously gross spectacle on the Mountain called Tam-Tams.

Here are the results of a quick google image search...

Non-Music Shit / Re: carpal tunnel rats
« on: April 16, 2009, 07:31:58 AM »

Could be tendonitis.  Not exactly sure how it's different from carpal tunnel, except that CT typically produces a network of symptoms up the arm (pain, numbness, pins and needles) & tendonitis is a more localized pain.  I have one of these and it sucks, but I've found it fairly manageable.  I now play my guitar a lot higher up on my chest and that has cut the cramping in half.

Besides that, be sure to shake out and stretch before and after playing...and if you're getting cramps, you should take a few minutes to stretch every 30 minutes of playing.  You'll want to stretch your fret fingers (hold them out and steadily pull each one gently for about 10 seconds), both forearms (hold an arm out straight in front of you with your hand facing down.  Gently pull up your 4 fingers...not thumb...to the point of resistance and hold), and your neck (lots of more elaborate stretches, but the easiest is tilting one ear towards its corresponding shoulder, then slowly looking down towards the ground till you feel resistance).

It's important to remember that this shit is caused by overuse of the muscles in question, but it's also an expression more general problems that can be addressed for more permanent results.  Basically, physical fitness & your circulation most of all.  I'm no health nut (smoke, drink, and eat how I want), but I find jogging 2-3 times a week is a pretty easy way to keep in okay shape.

Music Shit / Re: Punk at the Movies
« on: April 15, 2009, 09:05:28 AM »
Some good ones:

- Derek Jarman's Jubilee stars people like Adam Ant, Jayne County, Toyah Wilcox, and the Slits are in it for an amazing 15 seconds.  A little too arty/academic at times, but more punk than any punk attempt at "self-representation" from that period.
- A bunch of movies by Jon Moritsugu are really good: My Degeneration, Terminal USA, Mod Fuck Explosion...but I think they've gotten crappier in recent years.
- The movie Liquid Sky is a pretty angry downer, but it's really good and has an amazing soundtrack of Residents-esque Disco takes on melodies lifted from Carl Orff, and bizarre punk disco scenes.
- Desperate Teenage Lovedolls is a pretty crappy movie, but the soundtrack is good.
- There's all that Cinema of Transgression stuff, but a lot of it's shit.  Some stuff's good: Richard Kern, Nick Zedd, Manual deLanda

45 rpm...grooves free to breathe...12" EPs more easily achieve maximum sound quality.

How much are these records, really? Take the Red Mass 12" EP. Great shit! Sounds perfect! 4 songs. Coulda been two 7"es, or this rather excellent 12". If it was two 7"es, it still woulda cost $12, and you'd hafta get off the couch four times. $12 for the 12"...get off the couch only twice...enjoy better sound quality. It's a better deal.....fuckin' whiners!!!

I put this record out & couldn't, in good conscience, confine those tunes to a 33 rpm 7" -- that would have been a tight squeeze.  We did everything we could to make it affordable (including assembling the jackets ourselves), but we've been kinda fucked by Canada Post.  We were targeting to ensure retail under $10, but our mailing system's present fuckery has very regrettably forced import prices on anything we ship from Canada.  We can work around it, but only slowly.

Pink Noise is the best band in Canada.  Is duder moving to MTL?

MTL can suck - or, it's great, but it's very much an insider's city, and there's always so much going on.  Touring bands worth checking out sometimes get lost in the shuffle (of countless crummy indie bands).

On the plus side, the local scene has taken a sharp turn towards punk rock.  My 'hood (Jugg's too) is just a couple of kms squared & it's home to about 10 amazing bands - most of them doing their thing for less than a year now.

Juggs and I have talked about gettin' all the folks doing shows down here a little more in synch.  We got at least 4 venues (basement, lofts, and one sympathetic bar) down here, and attendance that can eclipse any uptown indie rock bar show.  I think this summer will see this little microcosm find its legs.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Help! Label sticker stuck on grooves.
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:27:29 AM »

If this were my problem, I'd try a small spot of smooth peanut butter on the offending portion of label, but away from the groove...a couple millimetres or so.  Let it sit, anywhere from 6 hours to - I don't know - a day(?) but keep an eye on it to ensure that the oil from the PB isn't advancing too far over the groove.  Then carefully wipe the peanut butter off, excise the bit of label (you should be able to just cut a line and peel it off with an Xacto), and clean with a good cleaning solution.

has anyone else had the problem with Sublime Frequencies LP's where the label is all wavy (or wavvy) and rippled? I have 2 different SF releases where the labels are like that.

About 4-5% of the last order I received from United had this problem.  Pissin' me offff.  Used those for comps & radio/review copies.  Has anyone else had this problem with United?

Non-Music Shit / Re: Has anyone cooked with Quinoa?
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:39:10 PM »

New here.  Lurked about for new releases, but I'm so into this gear I had to sign up.

Quinoa is tops.  Anything you might use cous-cous or bulger or polenta in can take quinoa instead.

Especially rewarding in simple cold salads: shredded cucumber, carrots, shallots, lemon juice &/or lime, basil, etc.

You can cook it with a little extra water to make it stickier - then use in veggie burger mix if that's how you do, or, I like to fry paddies of it & do eggs benedict on top.
