Non-Music Shit / Re: Republican National Convention

Do I really have to vote for Hillary?

No. You don't.

Obviously you're free to vote for whoever you want. Statistically speaking, does a third party candidate have a chance of winning this presidential election? Barring some unforeseen game-changing event (e.g., a giant meteor hitting one of the convention centers), you're effectively helping to elect the major candidate you're most ideologically opposed to. The choice between Hillary and Trump for me is like a choice between eating rotten vegetables and eating dog shit, but the sad reality is that's the choice about 40% of a disenfranchised electorate is facing this November.

I guess if there's a lesson to be learned, we end up with the candidates most of us deserve. Direct grassroots involvement in party politics (or lack thereof) aside, roughly only 60% of Americans at best vote in presidential elections; 40% midterm elections; and less than 20% in local elections. The corporate doucheballs who get elected by the voters who bother to show up then rig the game (via gerrymandering, closed primaries, superdelegates, etc) to cement the status quo.

So I'm going to bite the bullet and cast my vote for Cersei Lannister in a pantsuit. I fully intend on getting involved in local progressive politics, and chip in for the campaigns of Green candidates in the next few elections. Hopefully I don't spend all of that time drinking Old Crow and playing with records instead.

All of this and worse in honor of this fuckin' fog demon that presents himself as if he was the Fanta-shaded wrestler America needs (Steve Austin please save us):

If Steve Austin suddenly elbow-dropped Trump from the RNC stage scaffolding, and followed it up with a Stone Cold Stunner before getting plugged by the Secret Service, most of the audience would erupt in cheers and the threat of a Trump presidency would be ended forever.

Some of them are really good, in-depth reads with a lot of cool anecdotal material: Pink Flag, Chocolate and Cheese, Reign in Blood, and Doolittle were all fast, fun reads, and gave nice insights on the songwriting and recording process. The writers selected for these books already know their stuff, or at least make earnest efforts to play catchup.

A few were kind of long-winded about the broader social and historical context: the Ramones first album and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back almost lost me a few times, but they eventually pulled it together enough by the end to be rewarding reads.

On a lark, I tried reading the Use Your Illusion Pts. 1&2 book, but it was clear from the get-go that the guy writing this volume was some too cool for school ex-Spin editor who hated the shit out of the band and the album, and would rather write about anything else. Not a huge fan of those albums, but not a fan of being insulted, either. Never finished that one.

I'll be starting on Double Nickels on the Dime pretty soon, hoping it got a writer who not only gets their humor, but didn't ruin it by getting overly academic. Also have Unknown Pleasures, Forever Changes, Entertainment!, and Tago Mago on the to-read pile, and there are a whole lot more I'd like to get my hands on. All in all, I'd recommend most of the ones I've read.

Sick. Post more. S.Clay Wilson is one of my all time favorites - those 'Mythology...' books on him are incredible, can't wait for the third one to come out...

Congratulations to the blushing bride, and best wishes for a future built on a foundation of infidelity.

Just imagine how awesome the schadenfreude will be when (not if) their marriage ends when one or both strays, and how sweet it will be not to be the sucker married to her.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Movies I've been watching

Recently a young girl I've start hanging out with and who claimed she'd seen all good horror movies was apparently a rookie to RE-ANIMATOR. Obviously her mind was blown into tiny pieces.

"It's so good but it's so old"

'But'? American horror cinema died after 1985 when this, DAY OF THE DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVIND DEAD were made. Every horror fan knows that"

"Well, I didn't"

"Well, now you do. Let's watch some more 'old' horror flicks next week"

"Yeah, let's do that"

 :D

1985 was a banner year for horror flicks, both American and otherwise: Re-Animator, ROTLD, Day of the Dead, Fright Night, Demons, Phenomena, The Stuff, Silver Bullet, The Mutilator, etc. However, I don't think American horror abruptly died that year--the remaining 80s gave us Hellraiser, The Fly & Blob remakes, Night of the Creeps, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, a couple alright Friday the 13th sequels and Nightmare on Elm St sequels, Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, Evil Dead II, Angel Heart, Brain Damage, Maniac Cop, Night of the Demons, etc. The quality and irreverent feel of the best 80s horror was definitely tapering off by the end of the decade.

The 90s--especially in regard to American horror--were pretty dismal. I think I can count the good ones (Event Horizon, Castle Freak, ROTLD III, Frankenhooker) on one hand. The last two decades haven't been too much better; while I enjoy a lot of Japanese and European stuff, it's just not the same. American horror just seems to be going through the motions at best, with everything being either a) PG-13 dreck or b) too self-consciously tongue-in-cheek and sorely lacking the genuine sleaziness of Re-Animator, ROTLD, etc. I keep hoping shit will improve, but every time I take a chance on something recent on Netflix, I'm never too impressed.

Been lurking on Termbo forums for a while. Here goes.

Yeah. That's really great.
So the first names that come to mind as comparisons (sorry to be cheesy....) are XNO/Chet Darmstadter and Robert Williams both of whom I admire. Excellent use of line - I really like the way you contrast densely heavy and fine.

 Twisted and cool.

Not at all cheesy. I'm very familiar with Robert Williams and XNO's work (a collector friend of mine has one of XNO's paintings, lucky guy), but I've absorbed more S. Clay Wilson and Roy Tompkins (who did my favorite comic ever, Trailer Trash) over the years. I have a shitload of these kinda nonsense drawings--I just initially do some "automatic" pencil drawing, and ink over the lines that I think would balance out the composition. I used to do these as warmups to drawing actual stuff, but eventually they became a project unto themselves. Thanks for the kind words.

Music Shit / Re: Captain 9's And The Knickerbocker Trio
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:20:41 PM »
I just wanna say thanks to Captain 9's and the Knickerbocker Trio (especially drummer Lee Ash, whose legendary mixed tapes I still covet). They're one of the handful of good bands that ever came out of this shithole that is northeast PA.

I saw them back in '92 when I was a pimply teen in a Nine Inch Males shirt at this crummy Wilkes-Barre club called the Factory that played mostly industrial muzak (unlike some people, I wasn't hip to cool shit from the get-go). Right in the middle of "I think I wanna be" during that line about being a fireman, and watching your house burn down, a bunch of dudes with serious mustaches in full fire gear appeared in the crowd. For a few minutes I thought it was some dumb new trend, until the show was abruptly stopped, and it was announced that the place was in violation of a slew of fire codes and the Factory was closed, for good. Good times.

Does that CD-R that Tom is selling have the track "Sophie's Tiki Lounge" on there? I still get that song stuck in my head even though I haven't heard it in fifteen years.
