Non-Music Shit / Re: Discogs.com
« on: April 13, 2016, 04:11:47 PM »
As Discogs has grown so has the influx of assholes who buy shit and then take 4-5 days to pay for things but don't communicate about it, or just don't pay at all. I know this would be resolved if I just set up an automatic payment option but I'm too damn lazy...

DAVID FIRST "SAME ANIMAL, DIFFERENT CAGES: VOL.1 " LP (FABREC040.1)

Release Date: 5/9/2016

Fabrica Records is very excited to announce that it will be working with American composer and improviser David First on a series of releases under the name "Same Animal, Different Cages". The first album in the series, Volume 1: ?tudes for Acoustic Guitar, is now available for pre-order.

The transparent green vinyl edition is exclusive to pre-orders made through the website - fabricarecords.com

On ?tudes for Acoustic Guitar, First twists and bends notes from his steel-string acoustic guitar, an instrument traditionally associated with American folk, country and blues music. And in fact, those genres are central to First's explorations here, constituting portions of a palette that also encompasses jazz and Indian classical music. The result is a series of stylistic hybrids in which an expansive tonality is propelled with rhythmic authority. The effect on the listener is similar to that of tape manipulation, or to the challenges posed to the inner ear by Phil Niblock's shifting dissonances. It's almost as if the room itself speeds up and slows down as First performs in it, anchoring himself in three humble dimensions and letting time do what it will. The "Same Animal, Different Cages" series serves as the latest chapter in the oeuvre of a musician whose defining quality is arguably his curiosity. David First asks the right questions, and there are no wrong answers.

Vinyl Limited Edition of 300 w/download card.
100 on Transparent Green Vinyl
200 on black vinyl

3/1 is the grand reopening, in theory. I think we're still on pace for that.

There is a new name. Or we're like 90% set on it. Maybe, I don't know

Looking forward to the new shop. Kind of glad you're changing the name, even though I know there was nothing to it and would continue to support it if it had kept the same name.

I sometimes go over the following scenario in my head "the apartment is on fire and I have a few seconds to grab what I need and cherish the most..." first I'd secure my wife and our cat, my wallet, id/passport and then I'd probably grab my guitar and whatever records I could fit under my arm... choosing which ones to save would would be the most difficult choice I'd ever have to make. I'd probably grab my Victor Jara records which were pressed on the record label run by the youth wing of the Chilean socialist party in the 60's. Those records, and even the original tapes (I think), were destroyed by the military dictatorship and original copies are very hard to find. I only own two original Victor Jara releases from that label, the others were Argentine or European pressings. So, it would probably be my Victor Jara records... if I had to pick just one of them it would be this one....

Anyone have any experience with reissuing material previously released by now extinct labels? I know Superior Viaduct has done an amazing job at this, although at times that has led to some bumps with artists who didn't own the rights to their own music (Craig Nommos for example). I'm interested in exploring re-issuing some older new music/modern composition works that are long out of print but have not had much luck figuring out who owns the rights and many times old e-mails for labels and artists don't work or the artists themselves have no idea who has the masters, the original film for the cover art, etc...

you're boring

That's totally legit. I wish I could understand what exactly people find so appealing about this record other than the fact that it has been out of print for over 30 years. It's really basic electronic reggae/dub with a white brit singing over it. It's pretty low-key and mellow. There are far better reggae records, and it's pretty far from the experimentation of This Heat/Camberwell Now/Flaming Tunes. While I can appreciate really simple music for sure, I don't get all the love for this one, much less the inflated prices it goes for.

i was drunk sorry hahah....i actually went back and listened to it. It's not mind-blowing...i dunno if i would simplify it as casio reggae though. i'll take the gareth and marie curie record over it anyway though....i wish BEB would keep that in print.

and yes the prices are exorbitant....

so to summarize, sober me somewhat agrees with you haha

'sall good.

Gen Ken Montgomery - this is great

Gen Ken performed an homage to Conrad Schniztler, with whom he worked closely over the years, at the store some months back.  At Ken's urging, attendees brought their own portable tape players and boomboxes and simultaneously played a Schnitzler cassette while moving about the space, toying with the volume and flipping sides at random -- just as Con had intended it to be performed.  It was very cool.  And poorly attended.  Of course.  So goes the plague of the 18th St. Academy, the flagship store that doesn't mean shit to most anyone who cares.  Well.  Fuck it.  Who else would employ me?  Ken's a cool and gracious guy.

Some impossible bass/drums fun on the first track with some sweet soul moments.  Very good.

I would've attended if I'd known about it. Does 18th St Academy have an e-mail list or something?

DAVID FIRST "Same Animal, Different Cages Vol.1: Etudes for Acoustic Guitar" LP (FABREC040.1)

DAVID FIRST "Same Animal, Different Cages: Vol.2 " LP (FABREC040.2)

More info soon and pre-orders will be posted at http://www.fabricarecords.com

Most recent release was a digital compilation to benefit refugees from Syria, Iraq, Libya called V/A "You Are Welcome Here" which can be downloaded for a donation here - https://fabricarecords.bandcamp.com  (I'm also slowly adding the entire back-catalog on bandcamp)

A new sub-label called Idle Chatter will be dedicated to releasing limited-edition cassettes which will be distributed via Fabrica Records.

Anyways, I'll use this thread to make label updates on new releases.
