Then again... there will be another major economic crisis, it's inevitable. The irony of gentrification is that it drives out the "culture" and "authentic vibe" that first attracted the yuppies to move in. So once it's a full-on rich asshole neighborhood all of the "cool shit" that people moved in for are gone.
I live in South Brooklyn, NY - Kensington to be more exact, and I used to venture into Williamsburg like 3-4 times a year just to go to record shops. All of those shops are now gone and have moved to Greenpoint or Bushwick so I have no reason to set foot in Williamsburg. And so I wonder... what's left there that is appealing to anyone unless their only interests in life are wine bars, overpriced mediocre restaurants and fake "vintage" shops.
My rent has actually gone down, and it's because I've moved further and further away from Manhattan and have seeked out neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are low key, pleasant, and just take a bit longer to commute to Manhattan (see Kensington, Ditmas Park, Dyker Heights, Borough Park, Bay Ride). I have more space, more sunlight (every room in the apt has windows!), more quiet, more trees, and awesome indian/pakistani/bengali and mexican food nearby. I even sometimes book shows at a space 5 mins away from my apt.
