Non-Music Shit / "CAH-AH AH-AH-AH......CAH...ON-STIPATED!!!"
« on: June 02, 2008, 09:25:40 AM »

In honor of Drugula's birthday and in order to warm his heart and hope the glow melts down the blockage in his hurting bowels, here is the first new fill-in-the-lyric contest since we rewrote "Beat on the Brat" with "Clown on the Bitch"...

Replace "run through a washin' machine" with seven other syllables...

"I'MMMMMM...SO CONSTIPATED!

SO CONSTIPATED!

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___, CONSTIPATED!"

Welcome, sscharleypride!

That is a great name...should be a band name even. Maybe a one-off side-project with another called ssnipseyrussell. They could become rival warships with Klansmen captains. Photoshop geeks, get to work! I wanna see my idea before my day at the office is done.

Non-Music Shit / BANDS: When in NYC and Hungry for Sandwich...
« on: May 28, 2008, 05:02:32 PM »

My friend Jen is starting a blog about chowing down on sandwiches with live bands. She's making the sandwiches...custom for you! I've never eaten her sandwiches, but I like Jen, so at the very least I recommend this for cheap eats with fun, friendly company.

Careful minin' me for recommendations...You might be making too many sandwiches! Should I have bands get in touch with you?

HA!!!! You Only Live Once?!

That's amazing.

Cheers to that Bum Kon track and the Jay Reatard. I'm leaving Fanatic on Friday, kinda weird.

I'm trying to start this project where I make sandwiches for traveling bands and blog about tour food. So if you have any friends coming through NY I will make them a sandwich!

Now that I'm livin' in Sacto, it's important that I keep my Yolo County connection workin' via Freeform KDVS in Davis. While most Californians don't even know Yolo is a county (the entire world of some Angelenos ends at Magic Mountain), most who know about it tend to think of it as three or four also-ran towns surrounded by fallow-fields and flood diversion channels. But in the gyms NYC, apparently YOLO is a ladies sportswear label, because apparently they know what we know...YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE. But after the three shows that sweep though the county this week, we'll feel like we died and gone to heaven three times!

Music Shit / AFS v. 177 ~ We Wrecked Your Car!
« on: May 20, 2008, 12:45:38 AM »

Keep both hands on the wheel this week. The 2nd half of this road gets has some bumpier stretches than we've seen in previous weeks. So much misanthropy and cynicism this week...You'd think I was in some kinda miserable mood! Well, it does suck when it's 100F (that's 37C for you canucks (can you imagine??)), but truly, it was a great week of CDR ephemera scores and record hauls.

I'm not much for comics, but this one was a favorite, and now I'm glad to have found its archive...

Definitely meshes all too well with the TermBo sense of humor. It's so incredible to think that this strip ran for so long in a University newspaper.

Music Shit / If You Are Coming to Northern CA...
« on: May 16, 2008, 04:26:36 PM »

Luigi's Fun Garden is aiming to open on July 25, so if your band is planning to come through Northern California after then, get in touch with me about playing a show here in Sacramento. This is will be the first time in a long-ass time that I'll be able to look at a calendar, see an open date, and then tell you "YES! IT IS ON!" No more pounding the pavement for any possible venue.

Non-Music Shit / Annoying People Who Give Bicycling a Bad Image
« on: May 13, 2008, 01:29:35 PM »

Since moving to within biking distance of my job in Sacto, I've been riding my bike to work more often than not, and it's working really great for me. I guess I'm even a little proud of biking to work, especially now that three of my employees are making the effort to bike sometimes, too. But, y'know what people are possibly even more ridiculous than militant vegans? I learned a sociological term for them yesterday...."Lifestyle Messengers" and "fakengers" or "posengers."

Lifestyle messengers are bike messengers who dress the bike-messenger-chic and ride track-bikes and fixed-gear bikes aggressively whether they are on the clock or just hanging out. Fakengers and posengers mimic their fashion and ride the same kinda bikes in the same aggressive style even though they are not bike messengers.

Sacramento probably has what? Probably less than a dozen actual messengers? How can I even know? It's definitely not SF or NY or any place where there's a big messenger community that's striated into an elitist group of lifestyle messengers and the rest who are admirable workaday messengers (mostly recent immigrants as seen on the 2nd season of "Wonder Showzen"). It just doesn't seem like we have the kinda city that should have coteries of young people on brakeless track bikes. What do these people do for fun? Watch "Quicksilver" over and over?

They scoff at my bike for having gears. They scoff because I stick pretty close to the edge of the street. They scoff because I'm not riding at an all-out sprint all the time. I know many of these people see themselves as part of the punk/freak/DIY/artistic community, too, but do they realize what a buncha fucking JOCKS they are?

Whenever a driver in a car seems to go outta their way to menace me when I'm on a bike, I blame these kindsa bike people for souring car/bike relations so badly.

The band known as Spaghetti & Moose Balls is now called Hanging Corpses, and they appear with two other Eugene bands on whacked-out Moon Boot Boutique vol 1 compilation. Most of the people I know who dig TNV tend to be older, tend to have gone through or paid attention to a lot of 90s underground indie stuff...

The continuity between that stuff and the new bands that many of us are listening to is pretty striking.

It would be interesting to put together a list of the "essential" American indie records from that period.  Mine would probably include III and a passel of singles by Sebadoh; the GBV LPs and singles from about '92 - '95; the early Pavement singles and EPs and maybe Slanted & Enchanted; the obvious early RTX records.

And I'd round it out with a bunch of one-offs, obscurities, and long-forgotten never-weres, f'rinstance:

-Butterglory's first and only 7" for Merge, "Our Heads," which is a great piece of ramshackle pop that still sounds great
-Love Child's Okay LP and their Love Child Plays Moondog 7" EP (three gorgeous, home-recorded Moondog covers)
-George Willard, Wckr Spgt, and a buncha them Shrimper bands whose names I can't even remember anymore.

Maybe a couple of cuts off the early Smog LPs, too -- Sewn to the Sky and Julius Caesar were pretty wrecked for the time.  Dude was actually a pretty interesting, fucked up four-tracker up 'til about 1994.  Kind of a pussy, though, even then.

Worth mentioning that Rep's Stupor Hiatus LP came out around this time, too, and even though the recordings were much older and the music much deeper, it made perfect sense within this context and proved a gateway to other things.

Butterglory played shows every xmas at the DAM House before it was called the DAM House.

Is the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282's "Lovelyville" too early for "that period"? Or what about that one 7" by the Angels of Epistemology.....best thing ever on Merge, I think. That "Vile & Disgusting" song killed it! Well, Polvo's "Cor-Crane Secret" measured up as well, too. I still like everything they did up to about 1994.

Henry's Dress were always great on vinyl.

Joby's Opinion had that "Natty Bohemian" single that I totally loved.

I remember a couple Trackstar 7"es being pretty good.
164

Okay, folks

You've been a fan of their 7" record on Sweet Rot, but live and in-your-face and minus the tape-hiss, you can bet these guys are so much more awesome.

Fri July 4 in Davis @ DAM House w/ Mutators (Van., BC), Sucks, & the return of Sexy Prison!
Sat July 5 somewhere in the Bay Area
Sun July 6 somewhere on the other side of the Bay Area

Bay Area, this is an APB for the fun times...please get in touch!
