According to this here certificate of "French reading proficiency" (obtained in 1999, no one has ever asked to see it)
You should carry it around and whip that out whenever asked for ID.

I'd like to see a series of Strapping Fieldhands reissues.

Talk about pissing money away! Not a reflection of the band, but the demand.

Too bad - the stuff before the Third Kingdom CD is great.  Sherman from Shangri-La has been threatening to do a CD of Discus since the LP was still around.

Delta 5' "Mind Your Own Business" 7" re-issue

This "reissue" is kinda baffling - why ditch the B-side and stick a remix on there instead?  Not that 'Now That You're Gone' is the greatest song or anything, but still...

Bassholes and Without a Name LP - superb!  I don't know what got Howland gunning for such a burly sound, but I'm all for it.  More!

For every good No Wave-influenced band (US Maple, Harry Pussy, Shearing Pinx), there's a heap of bad ones, so I think Whet Bull's point holds true.  I think most of the Chicago Now Wave bands were kinda tedious, and I gave 'em a chance.

Nico by a hair, but that may be tinged by nostalgia.  Honestly one of the first records I bought with my own money.

Yeah, but if not 'good,' by my standards anyway, at least all these things are - from some angle - defensible.  You wanna get down to the real shit, it goes thusly:

* white reggae (though I'm tempted to strike out 'white') - can you cite an example of influential white reggae (as opposed to white ska)?

Umm, you might say THESE GUYS cast a fairly long shadow considering every new wave band dressed like them and every punk band included a fucking dub or reggae song or version in their set.  they also clearly anticipated the rise of milquetoast mainstream indie rock.  i know when i actually heard the raconteurs i thought it was the police and then roxette.
Oh jesus, duh.  I can only offer the feeble excuse that I think of the Police as their own special brand of horrific.  It's too bad Sting dind't grow dreaeds.

Hold tight, everyone-- I'm gonna drop some serious profundity here....

I don't look, I listen!

i guess what inthusiast was aiming at is the thousands of years old "seeing" metaphor for knowledge and enlightenment which has been prevalent in the language of philosophers since ancient greek. in that context "listening" would be more about being aware of things.

i thought that's obvious.

Dunno, maybe inthusiast was high as shit and experiencing synaesthesia.  Me?  I look for a mysterious blank cover, no notes, and blank labels so I don't even know what speed the record plays.

Bull records are common enough. Granted not as easy to find as they were ten years ago, but ten years ago I could find Fahey records on a regular basis, too. Gimme a month and I could find you the four Sandy Bull albums for a decent price.

Are the pickings that good in Sac?  If so, I've been a fool for driving to SF/East Bay/North Bay stores.  And if Pookie can find anything for $20, I'm PMing my want list tomorrow.

If I mention that the trend of reissuing good mid-priced/fairly common lps (Sandy Bull) is stupid and eventually destructive upon the used record store industry will anyone back me?

Also - this is the best Sandy Bull record. If I ever get around to making a "mix" for the cosmic/leftfield/etc. crowd I'll include "Gotta Be Juicy" on it.

And they're common where?  I know they're not KBD-rare, but it took me a decade or so to track all of the Bull records down.  Getting the Mecht Mensch single was easier.  Sure, there's the thrill of the chase and all that, but I'll stick up for instant gratification - I want to hear the thing, and I have no interest in the Soulseek route.  The reissues won't be around long enough to be more than a hiccup for the used world, and no sane person's whole business is based on used copies of three or four records.

Music Shit / Memorandum Records?
« on: January 05, 2010, 02:30:35 PM »
There's an unknown-to-me Aussie label, Memorandum, doin' up some interesting reissues (on CD, but what can you do?)

There's the Grong Grong record, which I know, with a ton of bonus whatsits.  A Tactics double-disc, and I've liked what I've heard by them.  Then there's retrospectives of Kryptonics and The Wreckery, both unknown to me - anybody have anything to say about them?

Music Shit / Re: Flying Nun Founder Regains Control Of Label
« on: January 05, 2010, 09:12:10 AM »
Yeah, he announced his vinyl reissue schedule already. He's doing the Ambivalence 7", Tally Ho, Boodle Boodle Boodle, Builders, Gordons, Chills, The entire Tall Dwarfs/Chris Knox catalog, anything you've ever wanted from Flying Nun, for the original 1980s prices.

I'm detecting a smidge of sarcasm here...

Yeah, you're probably right, although this would also be the smart thing to do if you were regaining control of a label like Flying Nun.  Get everything on iTunes, put together a few best-of CDs of the bigger acts for old people and repress quality vinyl of the sought-after stuff for nerds that are sure to buy 1000 of each with ease.

The Space is the Place LP was on Impulse! and was bootlegged on vinyl ca. '98 or '99.  Originals are rather scarce, actually, compared to other Ra Impulse! titles.

Sutro Park, who recently did some much-needed Sandy Bull reissues, are reissuing Space Is The Place in February.
