Music Shit / Re: Best Live Bands of 2009

I'm not letting the floor playing (Gonerfest, in my case) scare me off, I just thought them much better on stage (Amnesia in SF) & in general, no matter what the band, if they get down on the floor most of the audience can't see and the band sounds like mud.  And I was traumatized by breaking my glasses at a show in ABQ, so if I pushed my way up front I'd start having PTSD flashbacks and wonder where Bigdamncrazyweight went.

Cheater Slicks - one of my favorite recorded bands, and yet the two times I've seen them they 1) blow their records out of the water, and 2) stun me with the caliber of playing.  Hope they come West soon!

Intelligence
Lamps
Magnetix - on record I wish they'd just give up and sing in French.
Burning Bus - record, please!
Oh Sees, first time I saw 'em.  The Lightning Bolt play-on-the-floor thing is pointless and I hope they get over it.

Sorry I missed: Grass Widow; Wounded Lion; TV Ghost; the big Futurism thingy; Little Claw; Blues Control; Dan Melchior.

next up we are intellectualizing "CLOWNING ON BITCHES"

My paper's gonna be about the history of the dozens!  And at the big conference, when the limeys ask me to defend it, I'll only respond with Yo Momma rails.

Don Cherry Tibet LP - great record, crap reissue with lame sleeve.
Wounded Lion 7s on ITR and Gilgongo.  Both are growing on me.
Hillbilly Fever Volume 4 CD - Tommy Collins' "You Better Not Do That" is my official New Favorite Song.

first two Tar Babies lps. fuck, so good

Speaking of kicking myself...  I remember seeing these in the bins at Wax Trax in Denver in '87 or '88 and passed 'em up to buy something much easier to come by.  Glad they got reissued eventually.  Now someone's gotta get Dave Lang to compile up all of the Mecht Mensch stuff!

hmm, didnt know they were reissued. last year or the year before someone was selling sealed copies of the second one (respect your nightmares? i think i forget) for like 10 bucks
Reissued on CD by Lexicon Devil, no vinyl reissues.

you know, you just gotta dig through the singles. there isnt any one lp that is a total winner and the singles are hit and miss. the miss. recs collection is cherry picked for a reason. miss thomas was not as consistent as her peers miss james or mrs turner.

What's a good starting point, LP or CD, for Ike & Tina?

It's been a minute since I've spun it, but reminds me of proto-Dead C in one respect. An excellent "free rock" lp regardless & the best record to come out of southern Ohio, or at least Washington Courthouse. The Doug Snyder solo lp is pretty cool too.

Plus, he taped that Velvets' Columbus (Valleydale) show that you may have heard booted over the years.  The only EPI tape known.

I wish the Velvet Underground Bootleg Series had lived up to its name.  The first three words were true, sure, but we need more!

Mainliner 'Mellow Out' mp3s

I'm reaching for it now....must groove to the song "Black Sky"....that is one pump-up jam!

And how!  STILL kicking myself for missing 'em when they came through the Bay Area in '99.

Anyone care to offer an opinion on this one?

We need another Cherry Blossoms record.  Played the Cherry Blossoms LP and Alex Chilton's Dusted In Memphis the other night.  Hadn't listened to the latter in a long time - great record, one of the two things Get In Here in Santa Fe deigned to sell me over the year I worked near the store.  The usual routine was to riffle through the racks for an hour, pick out a record or two, and have the guy refuse to sell it because he hadn't priced it yet.  I've heard of more eccentric record stores, but that's the worst I've experienced personally.  LA's Record Collector was a close second, less pleasant due to the stench of dog urine and the fights between the owner and his lackey, but they'd actually sell you records and had amazing stuff.

Wait wait wait - someone signs up to deliver a lecture at an academic conference, and then tells people he's "not interested in defending what I have to say"?  I think the auditions for Bush Administration Press Secretary are over.

Last night's entertainments:

Woolen Kits "Teenage Love" EP - boy, does the singer sound like Calvin Johnson when he opens his mouth.  Played this one twice to hear the torrential guitar on the title track again.

Feeling of Love "Waiting For the Cheerleaders to Get Drunk"- do they have cheerleaders in France?  Decent single, though I hoped for more with the Zombies sorta-cover on the flip.  I'll probably stick this in a box and then spend the next two decades thinking "I oughta sell this," every time I thumb past it.

Grass Widow - second EP.  Nice, though I'm not sure why this is so adored.

Mississippi John Hurt - Mississippi reish of the Arhoolie "Volume 2" LP.  Great record all-round, and beautifully recorded.  Came to this guy long ago via Doo Rag, who covered a song off this record.

read Niche Homo #3, which will not help me escape accusations of artfaggery.  I love the part where three guys make each other mix tapes and then tear the hell out of the others' choices.

Car and Driver?  Or are you thinking Four Wheeler would be more man-style?

car magazines don't hurt either

Then my balls grew back - I leafed through Road and Track at the dentist's office yesterday.
