Yeah I did, but that was when I still lived in Toronto (2001).  I've been to Morecambe twice as well (2004, 2005).  I never need to see an UK punk band from the 80s ever, ever again.

haha i hear you. i went to HITS 1998-2001 (morecambe, berlin, bergara), plus a few days of the one in SF, whenever that was. totally over it! tho sometimes when the 100 club has their revival nights...

is dirty water club completely done now?

Its freezing outside and I'm definitely California dreaming.  Hope to make Budget Rock next year, haven't been to San Francisco in ten years and when I was there I spent most of the time in the seaman's (fnar fnar) hall watching washed-up English bands.

you went to Holidays in the Sun in SF??? that was a total mess. why not just stick to the ones in morecambe?

eat at temple st night market in kowloon! dim sum anywhere is awesome, too. i'd go back just to eat.

star ferry across the harbour is nice, as is the ferry ride then bus ride to lantau island, home of the giant buddha. highly recommend the skytram back to the mainland.

on HK island, there are several regular buses that go up to victoria peak (way cheaper than the designated victoria peak bus); go there just before sunset on a clear day.

caught a german oi band (nothing i'd bother going to at home) at The Wanch in wan chai on HK island. it seems to be the only punky venue around town. www.reverbnation.com/venue/thewanch

too bad i didn't have this list when we went in 2008: www.discogs.com/groups/topic/88903
we only found walls of sound on accident when we were riding the giant escalator. it had mostly used western (vs. eastern) records; when we asked where the other record stores were, the owner said his was the only one (aside from the CD/DVD stores in the malls). apparently this list begs to differ.

damn! second vacation?!?! i'd love to but don't think i can swing it. have you been to asia before? next time i go to asia, it'll be in late sept/early oct. went last feb and it was a little too overcast. couldn't see anything from victoria peak in hong kong and could barely see across the harbor!

yeah, i agree you could probably do better fare-wise, but if you can't deal with buying 5 different tix from possibly 5 different airlines, then this would take care of it.

Cities / ASIA air pass
« on: June 04, 2010, 09:32:47 AM »
If you're thinking of traveling to Asia this year, you might want to look into Cathay Pacific's All Asia Pass: http://bit.ly/cMsfI1

According to Smarter Travel,
"Cathay Pacific's All Asia Pass allows travelers to fly round-trip from the U.S. to Hong Kong and visit up to four other destinations in Asia starting at $1,599. Airfare taxes and fees are extra.

Considering that separately purchased flights between these destinations could easily cost you several thousand dollars, the All Asia Pass can be a tremendous value. You may also add on other cities in China, India, Nepal, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, or extend your travel period to up to 90 days (and add more destinations) for an extra charge.

The All Asia Pass includes round-trip airfare between Los Angeles, New York (JFK), or San Francisco and Hong Kong, plus 21 consecutive days available for travel between Hong Kong and up to four of the 42 offered destinations, including Bali, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Karachi, Phnom Penh, Seoul, Singapore, and Taipei just to name a few. If you aren't flying out of these three departure cities, you have the option to connect for a bit extra.

Departures at these prices are valid Mondays through Wednesdays August 17 through December 1. Summer departures are available from May 18 through August 16, though they come with a $500 surcharge."

Cities / Re: Rome / Italy

It's been years since I've been, but Radiation Records (circonvallazione casilina 44) is a good place to start for shows in Rome. I think Rave-Up Records puts on some of the bigger shows. For nightlife, try Pigneto, San Lorenzo, Trastevere, and, to a smaller extent, Ostiense/Testaccio. These hoods are just outside of the historic area. Isola Pedonale (which begins at the intersection b/w via del pigneto and circonvallazione casilina in Pigneto) is basically a street with a bunch of ever-changing bars; everybody drinks on the street until late. Food is amazing everywhere. Pizzas are cheap and tasty.

The only other parts of Italy I've been to are Perugia/Umbria area and the Cinque Terre (highly recommended).

In Madrid, we stayed at Hostal Ballesta for 43 euros/night in March: www.thehostelmadridcentro.com

It's a few blocks from the Malasana hood (from everything, really, just off Gran Via) and was a really good deal for the size of the room, amenities, etc. For whatever reason, hookers of all ages and sizes like to hang out on that block but it was fine. We'd definitely stay there again.

In Barcelona, residenciaustralia.com was the best we could do (44 euros, shared bath). The room was tiny but it was a few blocks from Plaza Catalunya, El Raval, Barri Gotic, etc. If we're still cheap when we go back, I guess we'd stay there again. If there's two of you, get a room with two twin beds, NOT the double room. You'll for sure have more space.

Thanks for the tips shboom.  My lady friend is having some visa problems so things are a little tense right now but seems like it's all gonna work out.  Keeping my fingers crossed anyhow, would piss me off endlessly to cancel everything now.

Gozac I'm going to make a point of eating this paella.

yikes, hope you guys make it!
i personally like squid ink (unless it's super salty) but my boyfriend thinks it tastes like goopy, dirty ocean. just saying...

anyway, here's MADRID:
-Malasana neighborhood (esp. around Plaza del Dos de Mayo) for punky bars such as Tupperware (C/ Corredera Alta de San Pablo 26) and Garaje Sonico (EXPENSIVE! http://www.myspace.com/garajesonico), shops, and eateries
-Wurlitzer Ballroom for shows/club nights: www.wurlitzerballroom.com
-We went to all the used record stores in town; sooooo expensive! Best bet is the Bowery (http://www.myspace.com/boweryshop), which carries new and old Spanish punk and also operates its own label; you should ask them what bars they recommend or if there's anything going on
-Mercado de San Miguel (on Plaza de San Miguel, west of Plaza Mayor,  http://www.mercadodesanmiguel.es) is fairly yuppie, what with upscale wine, olives, and cheese, but you can sample a bunch of different Spanish/Madrileno specialties for cheap, tapas style. Just circle through the market to see what strikes your fancy. We esp. liked the olive bar (you can get a crapload of varied olives for minimum 2 euros) and the mixed seafood tapas. It gets crazy crowded between 6-10pm.
-Parque del Retiro is huge and a great place to get away from the city
-Reina Sofia Museum is free from 7-9pm; Prado also has free hours, as does (I think) the Thyssen-Bornemisza
-supposedly La Latinia neighborhood is the place to go tapas hopping; we preferred the "uncool" diner-style joints with fluorescent lighting over the crowded spots

have a great time!

you're leaving next week! lucky!
anyway, here's some areas to check out (which you probably already know). if you've got a sweet tooth, get the hot chocolate, which is thicker than what we have here.

BARCELONA:
-La Boqueria, the market on Las Ramblas--not cheap to eat there, though!
-restaurant at Corte Ingles dept store (very top floor; use the self-service side and try to get a seat next to the window)
-El Raval (C/ dels Tallers for records, C/ de la Riera Baixa for records + 2ndhand clothes)
-Bar Ramon (smoky, jazzy tapas bar): http://www.barramon.com
-Ciutat Vella (area around Plaza de George Orwell)
-Bar Rodrigo for paella and 10-euro menu del dia; it's somewhere b/w the Picasso Museum and Jaume station: http://www.carballada.com/wordpress/2007/12/bar-rodrigo
-the funicular and cable car to Montjuic

SEVILLE:
-Barrio Santa Cruz
-La Carboneria (C/ Levies 18 in B Santa Cruz; touristy but the flamenco's free)
-if you have a sweet alcoholic tooth, Cafe Moderniste in Arenal: http://www.cafemoderniste.com
-we never made it to Macarena, which is supposedly grungy cool

I'll write up Madrid notes later...
